This is a Great Read. I'm reading it at the same time as the Forrestal Diaries. An excellent tour of his career and America; I learn much and was turning pages quickly. Great historical look back on James Forrestal. As I read more books about the Navy I am fascinated by a trend that emerges that truly typifies "Don't rock the boat" This attitude was definitely present in my short 8 year career in "this man's Navy" This biography of Forrestal is a rather sad portrayal of someone who virtually gave his life to serve his country.
In a time when so few people choose to join the military, here was a man who gave up a great deal to serve his country. Reading about his personal life is a little like peeking in an open window but Forrestal's relationships with Adm King and others was fascinating. His personal life took a back seat to his appointment but there is far more to his life than his being a patriotic workaholic.
It is ironic that the catastrophic fire that occurred on the USS Forrestal is now a primer for how to deal with fires on board ships. Am anxious to explore the resources that DC Dave cites but for now I would heartily recommend this book as just another piece of the puzzle that allowed the Greatest Generation to overcome the zealous Axis nations.
I was impressed with this book's scholarship, but after looking into the sources for the chapter on Forrestal's death, I have had some second thoughts. James Forrestal fell from a window of the 16th floor of the Bethesda Naval Hospital in the wee hours of the morning of May 22, The authors relate numerous details of the Forrestal's actions prior to his going out the window, but none of them are sourced directly to any of the witnesses, the various medical personnel who were on duty that night.
Rather, the strongest assertions that support the popular theory of suicide, which they endorse, turn out to be from sources that I was unable to trace, even using the services of the Library of Congress in person. The best source to start with would have been the official investigation, the work of a review board convened by the head of the National Naval Medical Center, Admiral Morton Willcutts, which took the testimony of most of the witnesses with a few notable exceptions. Hoopes and Brinkley unforgivably neglect to tell the readers that at the time of their writing that testimony was still being kept secret.
They also fail to tell us that the conclusions of the review board were released in brief summary form almost 6 months after the conclusion of the board's work, and that summary concluded only that Forrestal had died from injuries suffered from the fall.
Create lists, bibliographies and reviews: James Forrestal was a brilliant financier and military organizer, and he was the first United States Secretary Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands. Navy on the eve of World War II; as the architect of the national security state. Hany marked it as to-read Feb 27,
It did not conclude what caused the fall, that is, it did not conclude that it was a suicide, and it made no mention of the cord that was tied tightly around Forrestal's neck. Although I believe there to be some distant relationship I feel this very well written tome will clear-up many of my questions. I was also interested in seeing a name of a former Cleveland, Ohio neighbor in the bibliography and this only added to lmy interest in the Brinkley book Noreen Forrestal McBride.
