We were welcomed warmly into his lovely family and spent the first evening swapping stories and planning our next few days around the city. Everywhere you turn in Kuala Lumpur there appears a shopping centre. The Petronas Twin Towers and the KL Tower dominate the city skyline, both peering down over the sprawling metropolis far, far below.
With a budget severly curtailing flagrant consumerism, we spent our time wandering around the city, strolling through the different ethnic quarters, and stretching our necks gazing at the towering columns of steel. On the edge of KL we climbed the seemingly endless staircase leading into the Batu Caves, a grouping of Hindu temples in and around an immense cave system poking out of the otherwise flat surrounds. As seems routine in Asia, a resident troop of monkeys had entrenched themselves as the resident troublemakers, and spent their days terrorising unsuspecting plastic bag carrying tourists.
The howls of fear and screams of laughter provided as much, if not more entertainment than the actual temples. Tony gave us a hot tip on a reliable bike mechanic around the corner from his house, so thinking that our bikes deserved a touch of TLC, we passed them into the trusty hands of Johnny Ng from My Bicycle Shop in Bandar Utama for a day of pampering and massage.
His shop seemed to be the meeting point for all cycle enthusiasts in the area, so we spent the afternoon chatting with all the passing passionate fellow bike riders — thanks so much for your help Johnny and all the best with the new shop!! Our time in KL was brought to a close with another evening of good food and good company with Tony and Gwen. We look forward to repaying the favour some time in Switzerland with cheese, cheese and more cheese. The World Heritage Listed old town in Malacca is home to a wonderful collection of architecture highlighting its vivid colonial history since the beginning of the 16 th century.
Similarly to in Penang, the Portuguese came, were followed by the Dutch, then finally the English before becoming part of an independent Malaysia. The arrival of Chinese, Indian and Arab traders and workers also influenced the development of the city and its culture.
With tyres melting into the road courtesy of the blistering sun, we left the port, turned straight into a headwind, and headed south along the west coast of Malaysia. In true Malaysian style, food consumption became the highlight of our day, whether that be curry lunches served atop banana leaf or steaming noodle soups. Keeping us company for a few days were the inspirational Verhage family. Michael and Ciska, with their two teenage sons, Sammy and Jesse, have been travelling the world together as a family by bicycle for the last seven years. After almost 12 months our final goal was so close we could almost smell it. This gallery contains 36 photos.
Nina had often regaled me with stories of her misdemeanours on the beaches of Thailand ten years prior, and as such, after ten months of sitting on a bike pedalling firstly eastwards and now south, living it up on the beach seemed like it was going to be a definite change from our more recent endeavours.
The last ten years has seen a veritable boom in tourists heading to Thailand for a week or two under the sun. The coast and islands of Thailand really offer something for everyone: We were just another two added to the masses. Having an uncle living in Phuket gave us good incentive to hop off the bike and spend a week or two recharging the batteries. Although away on business, Bruce gave us free reign on his luxurious apartment until his return, and we enjoyed days filled with sunshine and stunning sunsets, Mojito in hand, from the comfort of his balcony.
With the bicycles safely locked up and enjoying a holiday of their own, we whizzed around Phuket, enjoying the stunning scenery of the island and catching up on the last year. Aboard a tourist-laden ferry, we coasted the azure waters of the Andaman Sea, stopping off at Koh Phi Phi for a few days, before continuing onwards towards Krabi and Railay Beach. We filled our days lazing about picture postcard beaches, ravenously devouring mouth watering curries, sipping on ice-cold Chang beers and playing game after game of Yahtzee. Upon our return to Phuket, Bruce was waiting for us and we enjoyed a few days letting ourselves be treated by him to the finer side of town.
Having not seen each other for almost three years, we certainly had plenty to catch up on. With the time counting down until our flight from Singapore, we finally dragged ourselves away from the incredible comfort, hospitality and generosity afforded to us by Bruce and Mei, and boarded another ferry February 9 th heading south towards Malaysia, this time taking our bike along for the ride.
Under a scorching sun, the riding was certainly going to get a little tougher. Keep the date free and more details will soon follow. This gallery contains 15 photos.
