This network of channels, rills and reservoirs is fascinating. Unfortunately, the only comprehensive book I could find specifically about the Acequia Real is in Spanish, and my translation ability is sophomoric at best. Usually, one would be disappointed by the sudden onset of a rainstorm during a romantic honeymoon in what is usually a dry, hot Mediterranean climate, but when the rain started pouring down, I welcomed it.
I wanted to see all of the water rills and channels in action around the Alhambra and in Granada. Some of the alleys in Granada have in my opinion beautiful drainage details. A simple durable detail that was created out of necessity to carry water either away into drains, out of beautiful scuppers to the river, channels carved to drain tree wells, or into the huge and beautiful storage cisterns called Aljiibes that exist below many of the plazas.
These details were so exciting to me! My hubby was no doubt annoyed by my constant stopping to photograph gutters, drains, and every detail I spied. Some ancient details and some newer shinier ones.
We rented bicycles assisted with electrical motors for a little extra umph- thank goodness! We rode through the Alhambra forest, through the Sacromonte neighborhood and then through the Albaicyn neighborhood. Many in the Roma community live in hillside cave-dwellings in the Sacromonte.
We explored a few of these and even helped an elderly Roma woman surrounded by stray cats harvest beautiful orange cactus tunas off the hillside for her dinner. We spent the next day exploring the grounds of the Alhambra. From the highest tower, we had such gorgeous views of the city below, the Albaicin and the Sacromonte nestled in the hillside topography across the river, the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife just outside the walls.
We walked through the Generalife which served as the cooler summer palaces and gardens for the court. These gardens were refreshing and the constant flow of water cooled the air physically and psychologically. We actually ended up sitting on the step because the table was so wobbly but we enjoyed the time spent there, the toing and froing of the waiters and the lovely free tapas we were given. Further down the street, on the way back to Granada, you'll find so many little shops selling interesting little souvenirs at reasonable prices, and casual clothing, that it's difficult to decide what to buy.
Great place for a wander and a drink.
