One Night With You (The Derrings)

Her parents conspire with her sister to marry her off to the worst man Once upon a time, Jane and Seth would frolic together in the fields and ride through the meadows, climb trees and skinny dip in the creek. Her parents conspire with her sister to marry her off to the worst man alive, because they hate her.

You would probably develop a phobia about it. And laundry in days of old was a nasty, complicated and time consuming business, I know because my grandma told me, and she was talking about the 20th century, so it must have been even more frightful whenever this book was set. This was the first piece of good fortune Jane had in years, but then she ended up under the thumb of her in laws, who also hate her. Desmond her brother in law refused to let her come out of mourning, and he kept trying to have sex with her. Plus his wife made Jane look after her horrible daughters, because the in laws were too cheap to shell out thirty quid per annum on a governess.

Corporal punishment was a thing that happened, even if you were a lovely person like Anne Bronte. In addition to being hated by relatives and in laws, Jane is, with only one exception, hated by the servants. The lesson here is never upset a laundress, it will always come back to haunt you. Anyway, one evening Jane escapes the house and the spies and accompanies her two widow duchess friends to a very questionable masquerade evening run by a hussy. Since Madeline cast him aside so she could marry an old duke, Seth has been having adventures fighting pirates and foreigners. Seth has come to the hussy masquerade to sleep with a hussy, before he gets down to the serious business of finding a wife.

He wants a wife his sister will like, and who can protect her from the evil cousin when Seth dies. Perhaps he will be the first multiple hussy seducing hero to end up with syphilis? I think the only romance staple she misses out on is being kidnapped and sold to a hussy house. It was all heaps fun. Sep 22, Halima added it.

I simply loved it!

A tear jerker after ages for me. Jane is so selfless in her love. Seth is oblivious to her love and afraid of it until he realises he's loved Jane, his childhood friend all along. A beautiful story about childhood friends turned lovers. Dec 23, Patria rated it it was amazing Shelves: This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. She does have two girlfriends from when she was married who are well off and they sneak her into a masquerade ball held by a courtesan a "Almost as if he heard her words, he answered the call to her parched soul, her deprived body She does have two girlfriends from when she was married who are well off and they sneak her into a masquerade ball held by a courtesan and lend her a sexy gown.

They start fooling around and Seth is mesmerized by her. She leaves just as things start to get hot and heavy. Seth blames himself for her blindness and is looking to marry someone who will take care of her. Once again, she puts the gown back on and goes to Vauxhall gardens where he finds her and they have the most intense sexual experience. Seth then sees Jane at a recital that her friend is hosting and tries to kiss her, she smacks him. She goes and confesses to Seth who defends her and marries her.

His main concern, however, is to marry someone who will care for his sister and Jane is acceptable in that regard because of their friendship. Despite some dislikes such as Jane being a doormat, Seth being all mean to Jane and just not getting his ego soon enough, this was a really good book. The story was great but the characters were a little lacking in the end.

Typical historical romance fare really, not overly clever or amazing, but generally well written and entertaining for an evening. I have the feeling I've read this before, but things kept happening slightly different to how I remembered them view spoiler [such as there being no real payback to the "in-laws" for their behaviour. I wonder if there's an updated version of this, or if there's actually another story kicking around out there somewhere that really is just that similar and I have my wires crossed. I did feel that the end was a bit rushed as the hero seemed to have a change in attitude over the last 10 pages for what seemed like no reason view spoiler [it certainly didn't seem like he'd learnt anything from ruining his sister's relationship, or even felt guilty for it, before he went to collect his wife hide spoiler ].

It felt hollow when Seth proclaimed it was always Jane he loved really, even though he was so heartbroken from her sister stringing him along that he willingly went off and joined the navy when his dad told him to and refused to fall in love ever again. I just couldn't really feel him thawing out and learning to love and trust again no matter what I was told, and it was especially noticeable when compared to the descriptions of the yearning unrequited love Jane had for him in return.

May 23, Julie rated it really liked it. This is a sweet historical romance that has you pulling for the main characters all the way. In true romance fashion, there is the push and pull of attraction, some sort of obstacle that gets in their way, someone doesn't want to admit feelings, but in the end, it turns out pretty awesome. What I liked about this book was pretty much everything as a historical romance fan.

The characters are all their own individual people, well rounded, and add to the story. The friends are true supporters, the villain is a nasty one that you will love to see get his comeuppance, the love interests are based on more than just attraction, and the piece that brings the two together is a welcome and realistic possibility that I've wondered why hasn't happened more in a historical romance. The pacing was flawless, the love scenes well done, not crass, and I felt the emotions of Jane and Seth as they battled their way to each other.

I invested in these characters and truly wanted to know how things would end. I am glad that someone brought my attention to her historical romance books as well. Aug 04, Aspoon rated it liked it. The Hero and Heroine were both great…lovable characters, they just needed a different storyline.

One Night With You

Here are the issues I had with the story. She was treated like and spoken to like a servant. So the story was just getting more and more ridiculous and trite. Again, good characters…terrible storyline. Mar 12, Yumru rated it liked it. This is the first time in a while I just can give one star for a book.

This one was a really disappointing book. My only complain about the book is that the scene where Seth confesses his love to Jane was done in a little bit of a haste. After a while his breathing slowed and his hold relaxed. Desmond her brother in law refused to let her come out of mourning, and he kept trying to have sex with her. I've read some historical romances but this one I just didn't like it. I didn't like the characters, the writing style, the story. When I read the summary I thought I might like this because it sounded great but now It's kinda sad because I so looked forward to read this one. Dec 20, Jultri rated it it was amazing Shelves: Some of my favourite themes all combined in this story - childhood friends reunited, unrequited love, unexpected pregnancy not entirely unexpected as sex did precede it as is the usual case , a bit of angst and a forced marriage, and you have a formula for a great storyline well told by the author.

Let down by a quickly thrown together ending. Feb 02, Manisha rated it liked it Shelves: Jane has loved Seth since she was seventeen and Seth was an untitled second son. The ending was rather abrupt and I totally didn't understand the side story of Seth's sister. Seriously, I expect more from Ms Jordan. Mar 27, Esra rated it really liked it. Jul 15, Summer rated it did not like it Shelves: I got into this book several chapters and wasn't entertained. The characters felt flat and the heroine seemed a bit of a doormat.

I love a romance where the couple knew each other from childhood but this one just didn't seem to do much for me. May 07, A. I really should learn that if a historical romance author uses off-putting language in one of her books it stands to reason that it will be there in all of them.

The premise of this story drew me in, and the language and oafish hero kicked me right back out. Sep 24, Alex rated it it was ok Shelves: I liked the plot concept but it wasn't executed well as it should of been done; for example, the scene were he realizes he loves her was too short. Jan 26, Ty rated it liked it. All I really want to say about this book is "HA! I knew it would end like that! Sharie Kohler Sophie Jordan took her adolescent daydreaming one step further and penned her first historical romance in the back of her high school Spanish class. This passion led her to pursue a degree in English and History.

A brief stint in law school taught her that case law was not nearly as interesting as literature - teaching English seemed the natural recourse.

After several years Pseudonym: You wanted to slug him for not letting Jane in or realizing his feeling until its too late. Jane was a fantastic character. She was strong when she needed and I really liked how Sophie Jordan developed Jane to become stronger throughout the story. The villains were actually the family of Jane which was made very clear in the book.

You wanted to hate them the moment they made their appearance in the book or insulated Jane. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Twitter account.
