Placing this figure in such a prominent place of the composition, clearly meant to evoke specific traits of the French, such as their humanity and mitigate any impression of French cruelty. This is consistent with written sources that relate the event. Le Noble, for example, makes a point in stressing apart from the military valour of the French soldiers, their humanity, and the efforts that they made to help the Portuguese after the battle was won: These French, so terrible in combat, when victory was assured, were reluctant to shed blood [that was] too easy to spill.
They were seen on the contrary tending a helping hand to their enemies: The French, so pas- sionate for beauty, sacrificed their pleasure for the honour of protecting the women that called for their help. It is interesting to note that the last two quote a French translation of Napier as a source for the events described, rather than a French source such as Le Noble whom Napier probably used in the first place. For similar reasons, the depiction of the disaster of the pon- toon bridge is relegated to a secondary status and is not central to the narrative of the painting.
In the left background, one can see amidst the artillery smoke the bridge and the diminutive fig- ures plunging to their death in the river. One can also see what is obviously meant to be a troop of Portuguese cavalry charging across the bridge. According to Le Noble, but also Napier, the Portuguese cavalry was in large part to blame for casualties on the bridge. Le Noble describes the disaster as follows: The crowd that arrives, pushes even more those who are on the edge. This demonstrates the distance between French and Portuguese representations of the events, and correspondingly the differences in their perception of them.
The Battle of Porto had a different function and targeted a different audience than the Portuguese images did. Whereas the Portuguese images ope- rated in a local context, with reference to a specific community, and also had a religious subtext, the painting by Beaume, as well as the rest of the paintings of the historical museum of Ver- sailles, was meant to be seen by French citizens as a reminder of their common glorious past, a national past which everyone shared.

At our approach the [Portuguese] ca- valry runs off and tramples underfoot the population forced to abandon their homes. The marshal duc de Dalmatie orders the inhabitants to be helped and saves a great number…The enemy looses canons, soldiers and a great quan- tity of drowned men.
The description is as neutral as the depiction itself. The di- saster is nothing more than an objective fact that does not elicit any sentiment on part of its author. The contrast between this image and the ex-voto discussed above is stark. These images, separated only by three years, indicate the different reactions that were expected from their audiences cool and detached observation from the French, compassionate sorrow from the Portuguese.

The United Kingdom was enjoying the most brilliant period of its history in both domestic affairs and the interna- tional and colonial sphere. During the second half of the cen- tury, Britain had attained the peak of her might as a European power, whilst simultaneously building a growing empire which was already one of largest ever known.
It was no wonder, there- fore, that in the political, economic, scientific and technological fields, British theories, opinions and know-how were already en- croaching upon and often supplanting those Portugal received from France. Among the British intellectuals whose ideas proved most thought-provoking and aroused most respect and admiration in the world of political thought during the second half of the 19th century, Herbert Spencer very probably occupied pride of place in Britain and in most civilized countries.
Viewed as a major thinker and philosopher, as well as an unsurpassable authority in political and economic theory, Spencer was, from the outset, widely admired in Portuguese intellectual circles, although some of his ideas were also greeted by negative criticism, particu- larly in the case of the work which will be dealt with here. Such a system, however, has not yet appeared at all and the ongoing capitalist crisis makes it extremely doubtful that it will ever see the light of day.
