Internet Edition; Hot Buttons: Sexuality Edition and Hot Button: Each book dives into the topic, lays a foundation for how a parent can discuss the issue, and then tackles some of the "hot" pieces. The books are small - and could easily fit in a purse or backpack. Each book provides short scenarios and three or four responses a teen might talk about in a particular situation.
I found the books I dove into the Sexuality Edition and Internet Edition specifically to be interesting. But they are a solid resource that a parent can use. I found the Internet Edition interesting, because she identified four websites that tweens and teens like to use, away from the "favorites" Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. I also thought the Sexuality Edition was frank, honest and not preachy. I also liked the study guide, O'Dell included in the back of each book.
The goal - another way students and parents can tackle an issue in a non-threatening way. In all, I'll keep these books as a resource for parents. On the scale of one to five, I give them a solid three and half. Ultimately, these books aren't the definitive solution to an issue - but they are a tool parents can use to start a conversation with their student. Considering how many of my tweens are struggling with bullying at school this fall, I'm definitely going to check it out when it's published.
As a freelance journalist and children's pastor , I was provided a copy of these books by Litfuse Publicity Group. This review was not influenced by a free book - just in case you or the FTC were worried about this detail. These books are fantastic! As a mom of a tween I am heading into new waters with my son.
The advice that Nicole O'Dell shares in these books provide the parents with the tools to help equip our teens to maneuver through these often difficult topics that are so very important. One thing I really liked about these books is they offer Bible based advice and the importance of prayer. The advice offered in these books is straightforward and easy to understand. The books are designed to help you talk to your child and work through these situations to teach them in a Godly way how to deal with dating, internet, drug and sexuality.
I received these books from Litfuse in exchange for my honest opinion. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own. I was not required to write a positive review. When our kids become teenagers there are conversations that we need to have with them about everything from relationships to drug use.
These conversations can be a challenge for those of us who aren't really sure what to say or how to say it. She not only provides ways to have the conversations, but also the scripture to go along with each one. As a mom of two teenagers, I am constantly looking for resources to help me lead my sons in these areas and to engage them in an honest conversation about each one.
This is the best one I have found yet. I highly recommend this series of books to parents of preteens and teens. See all 32 reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Oct 09, Andrew rated it it was amazing. Let me just go ahead and say that I am not in the target audience yet for these parenting series books. I am only twenty-two, not married yet, and I don't have any children or teenagers. But I hope to one day be a husband and a father. In the Internet Edition, Nicole O'Dell addressed the issues that come up surrounding internet usage and the dangers lurking around our children.
I understood her position on making sure we have boundaries and rules in motion to protect our children.
We must supervi Let me just go ahead and say that I am not in the target audience yet for these parenting series books. We must supervise how are children are communicating online with and limit how many hours they spend online each night. I personally loved the fact that she proclaimed that we have to check our children's internet browser history regularly. If the internet browser history is deleted then there has to be a consequence for their actions.
Why was it deleted if you weren't doing something, you know you weren't supposed to be doing? I am extremely glad that Nicole stated to make sure you have your children's social networks passwords. She helped me to avoid not knowing what my children are up to. She also suggested that we make the rules that our children are required to accept our friend requests from their parents.
This is done in order to make sure our children aren't having a chat and connecting with people that they don't know. The book also covered the dangers of internet porn and the risks of being sucked into the misrepresentation of what sex really is. I would recommend this book series to any parent wanting to protect their teenagers from the hidden dangers of the internet, sexuality, dating, and drug use. Parents need to teach their sons to respect girls and not to use them. Girls also need to be taught not to play around with boy's hearts. It's vital we teach our children the foundations of great relationships now so eventually when they enter into marriage, they know how to treat their spouse.
The book taught so many details and scenarios that I have never even considered that could be something my teenagers might have to face. The scenarios section in each book contained different scenarios per book. Parents would then describe the real life story to the teenagers, and then the teenagers would choose which ever multiply choice answer they would have done in that story.
I loved that Nicole coached the parents to not freak out on whatever response their children gave them. These life lessons aren't meant to preach to your teenagers. It's meant to connect and understand what your children are thinking. Then you can guide them to the correct choice slowly. If you're looking for guidance on how to parent then this series could significantly benefit you!
It has opened my eyes to the truth and I plan on doing this with my own children someday! If you're a parent, get this series, and do it with your children! Oct 23, Laura rated it it was amazing. Internet use Drug abuse Dating guidelines Sexuality and purity Bullying and Image Editions will release in Nicole exudes confidence in her books to parents in helping them learn how to initiate conversations with their young people for their own personal safety, their ability to stand strong against peer pressure, and live a Godly life. Nicole answers the Why, When and How in each book as they speaks directly to the issues at hand, which are the prepared, watchful, and proactive stances listed above.
The section under identifying the issue goes into greater detail, giving parents a great resource tool to open discussions with their children and to counsel them in the ways of God. And we all know as parents how hard it can be to open up discussions on these difficult issues at times with our teens. The third section includes protective procedures, the armor of God and strategic scenarios to work through with their young people, helping them to prepare beforehand to stand up to peer pressure, drug pushers, dating pressures, and learning how they can control their own sexuality.
If you have young people at home, start early to teach them Godly truths for these issues. After all, God gave them to you to raise and teach them to walk in His ways. You CAN do it! I believe every parent needs to get these Hot Button books. Remember, they are teaching sex education as early as kindergarten. Be proactive and reach your children for the Lord and His Godly ways before society and the media lead them down wrong and painful paths. These issues are close to my heart, and I thank Nicole for writing these practical, wise books for parents. Praying for your children is parenting at its best!

Oct 30, Kaylea rated it liked it Shelves: All Of The Above. There's a lot of topics parents in my children's ministry struggle to talk about. I'm always looking to find a resource I can pass along to them, to help start a conversation at home - between parent and child.

We must often blindly face the battles for our kids, operating more on faith than on sight, being obedient to the call of Christ and reliant on the leading of the Holy Spirit. Adults know how scary the world can be and yet we know that teens want to be out exploring the world more and more each day.
What is a parent to do? Nicole O'Dell has written a series of books designed especially for Christian parents of teens. Two books, Dating Edition and Internet Edition, have already been released. Two more books, Sexuality Edition and Drugs Edition, are scheduled to be released this fall. The books are short, easy to understand and filled with Godly advice on many worldly subjects that teens face.
The advice is straightforward, but from a Christian standpoint which makes the books very convicting to any parent trying to raise Godly men and women. The first part of each book details why it is so important for parents to talk to their kids about specific issues which author Nicole O'Dell calls "Hot Button" topics. The second part of each book lays out each specific Hot Button issues for the topic.
The last section of each book contains scenarios that can be used as conversation starters. These books are timely and interesting, even if the topics are scary for any parent to read about. My only concern is that these books target parents of teens, but parents might want to actually target tweens with this information. In this scary day and age, children need parental advice on these difficult subjects much earlier and earlier. I received the Dating Edition and the Internet Edition complimentary from Kregel in exchange for an honest review but the opinions in this review are all mine.
Jul 30, Leah rated it it was amazing. We are really big talkers in our family. It has always been our policy in our marriage and with our kids to have lots of open and honest communication. Nicole O'Dell is a youth culture expert and a mother of four. She is the founder of a ministry called Choose Now. It is dedicated to battling peer pressure and helping teens make wise choices. The Hot Button series is designed to help parents think through hot button topics that they need t We are really big talkers in our family.
The Hot Button series is designed to help parents think through hot button topics that they need to address with their tweens and teens. Each book starts with a Why, When, and How section that explores why we need to address these issues with our teens, when to broach the subjects, and how to bring up some of these difficult issues. These sections are basically the same in all of the books. The next section of the book addresses different parts of the topic at hand. The internet book looked at internet safety, social media sites, and pornography.
The dating book considered when to date, physical affection, and dating a nonbeliever. In the last section of the book, Nicole points out some action steps that parents can take. Then she gives scenarios to discuss with your child. I really, really liked the open communication style of these books.
I liked how Nicole stressed early discussions and being open with your kids. I liked how she emphasized the need for constant prayer in our relationships with our kids. The style of the books was easy to read and use. Each section is followed by bullet points for summarizing the content. The book's divisions are very nice to make them easy to follow. I look forward to using the scenarios with my teen and almost teen children.
And, I'd like to get the upcoming Hot Button books to use also. I received a free copy of these books from the publisher for review purposes. All opinions are entirely my own. Aug 03, Ibjoy Hannabass rated it it was amazing. Dating Edition and Internet Edition I was amazed at the wealth of information I found in both of these little books. Nicole O'Dell gives teens and tweens a series of books that will help in making difficult decisions on each of the subjects in these books. In the Internet Edition, Nicole talks about Internet activity, social networking, sharing files with others, internet porn and predators.
And she also gives help to parents on how to protect your child, and know what your child is looking at on the web. And she goes to the scripture and shares what that Bible teaches, and how young people should act as the use the Internet. In the Dating Edition, the author uses the same outline, only talks about dating starting with the early boy-girl relationship. She hits on whether or not to date, missionary dating, physical attraction and violence and abuse in dating.
And again, talks about protective procedures, uses scripture and the Armor of God and Strategic Scenarios for both parents and teens. I have to say I was very impressed with the two books I read in this Series. One really special thing about the series is that is gives parents and teens a chance to talk about these difficult subjects.
With a study guide at the end of each book, the questions are already there for discussion, making it much easier on both the young person and their parents.
