This series of tales from P. Elrod are all previously published and she has gone back and polished and tinkered with each until it shines I like the one she refers to as the "Director's Cut. You are getting well-written and well-edited stories. Elrod's voice shines brightest in the Jack Fleming stories. She creates a world of a vampire detective in Chicago who often does "favors" for a boss named Gordy.
Against the backdrop of mob-run Chicago, Jack Fleming tries to use his unique abilities to do the right thing, with often harrowing and sometimes amusing consequences. I like that Fleming has weaknesses. He can vanish and slip through walls, but a crack on the head with a wooden rifle stock nearly kills him. He is not so powerful that there is no suspense in the stories. The stories have a nice noir style where the mayhem is overlaid with a touch of glamour.
There is plenty of death and destruction, but not a lot of blood and gore. Sort of like a s detective movie, the violence is more implied than graphic. The restraint and refreshing lack of in-your-face splatter makes this book just like the name implies a perfect lunchtime companion. You won't regret it. Very few authors can write urban fantasy as well as Elrod. She is up there with Kim Harrison and Laurell K. Hamilton as one of my favorite authors in this genre. I would recommend this collection to anyone, but would suggest you first read the Vampire Files series.
You will enjoy this book without reading the others, but you'll get more out of it if you've read the series first. You'll also be kicking yourself asking why you hadn't read it sooner! There were two things wrong with this kindle edition which kept me from giving it five stars. First off, it really annoyed me that there was no table of contents with links to each individual story. I wanted to read all the Flemming stories first and had to tab through forever to find them on my kindle. Such a basic oversight was very frustrating to me! The second thing I found very annoying was the DRM.
I use an old nook for on the go reading and keep my cherished kindle at home. I wanted to convert the book over to epub format to put on my other e-reader.
As it turns out, it ended up not being that big of an issue as I read the whole thing in one sitting! Please come out with more Vampire Files soon! It's been way too long! One person found this helpful. I never thought I'd read vampire romances, but P. Elrod really draws you into the stories, which are mostly not really romances, but more mysteries at least to me, since that's what I like. I will try one of the many full length novels of her vampire Private Investigator after reading the short here.
They're really good and "realistic" and follow a fair enough set of paranormal rules that the clues to the mysteries allow you to solve the case yourself if you try. I've since also tried several of her anthologies, and she does a good job of selecting similar types of stories for those, as well. There was at least one mistake on every page. Took me out of the story every time I caught one and I'm sure I missed most of them.
Like a favorite pair of shoes, a beloved roller coaster or that perfect meal. A fitting adrenaline ride that you can sink your teeth into. If you've read her novels, this collection is like a box of cupcakes. All the flavor, and the stories won't spike your blood glucose.
And, if you haven't read her novels -- what are you waiting for?! Lunch Time Reading be damned. Lunch time passed along with tea time and dinner time as well before I could tear myself away and then only to feed my cats for whom I now have an even greater respect thanks to the second story in the collection. The stories carry the same attention to detail in characterization, plot and language that captured and held me with her novels, and I eagerly await her next offering. In the mean time, I'll just indulge myself in revisiting this and the author's other works.
I bought this for the story A night at the horse opera, which is my favorite of the short stories and I wanted a copy on my Kindle. There is also a sequel to Quincy Morris Vampire which is in my top ten Vampire novels. I would love to see it become a series. This is one of the first books I purchased for my Kindle. I couldn't possibly wait for the next lunch time to read this book - it kept me inthralled from beginning to end and I read it in one sitting. Elrod does not fail to impress in this or in any other books I have read that she has created.
