I also liked how they challenged the notion of what we think about dinosaurs such as them hunting as pack animals. Also the domesticated dinosaur was a nice inclusion. Nice little touches that add to the story. It's certainly a strap yourself in for the ride sort of book. I really liked all the characters.

We get a good variety of them without their being too many. We focus on a few but we do also get everyone included. I really enjoyed it throughout and the ending was great from action to build up of the ultimate consequences. The narration matched the book very well and kept me interested in the story as well as giving good pacing.

Thirty years before, the first bubble appeared in Wyoming, then others followed worldwide. Some were enormous, up to miles across. At first there was chaos as, within, the earth had turned over revealing a prehistoric scene straight out of Conan Doyle's Lost World.

A defensive wall was built around to contain the dinosaurs and soon Topside Industries was founded, a huge money making concern offering tourism possibilities. Although there were inherent dangers in visiting so dangerous a past, Topside had a sterling safety record - until it all went wrong. Every year, regular as clockwork, the areas would turn, alternating between the current scenery and that of the long distant past, the topside becoming the flip side.

Every year, precisely predictable until, thirty years after the that first event, the turn was early, trapping some on the flip side for another year. And when the time came again for the next turn With his usual ability to completely draw a reader into his often crazily immaginative worlds, Jake Bible wastes no time in plunging straight into the action with vividly scary pictures of people trapped in the experience of terror.

Then the story itself is developed, the major characters introduced and given personalities and life, then all is once again plunged into almost non stop action until the end. And what amazing action, with unique situations to grip and hold attention. It hurts, too, if any of the protagonists, so alive just minutes earlier, falls in line of duty, as it were, or just because of a silly accident. It's fast, fierce and furious tooth and claw action but still with time for humour and to reflect on life and the world around, as well as playing it's own small part of scrambling the situation.

A fast action book needs a fast talking narrator, and once again Andrew B. Werhlen teams with Mr. Bible to further bring the entire story to life. The text is read at a fast clip, the narrator's voice well modulated, paced, with understanding, to the written words. Each protagonist, male and female, is given appropriate and distinctive voice until the narrator himself seems to fade away leaving only the characters themselves in their unfolding story.

I am not usually a fan of man versus dynosaur adventures but certainly make an exception with Flipside. Werhlen between them made this book simply dynamic. I have not listened to anything like this before, normally I steer clear of stories involving any kind of time travel but I did enjoy this one. The action was fast paced and drew me in, the mix of dinosaurs and combat robots making this an interesting mix. The time bubbles were a bit confusing, especially later on but it did not take away from the story in any way.

There is an interesting range of characters, some like able, some not but with some nice interactions between them all. Andrew Wehrlen does a great job of narrating, giving each character a distinctive voice without sounding silly. I was given this copy to provide a non-biased review and I can honestly say that I am looking forward to the next installment of this series.

I didn't know any of Jake Bible's previous work before listening to The Flipside. He writes action scenes effortlessly and effectively and knows how to deliver a flurry of things happening in a way which feels real and dramatic, and that perhaps is both his strength and weakness.

The Flipside is an exciting story about dinosaurs, killer robots, and survival in the harshest environment of all, our own prehistoric past. I suppose a part of me was expecting another Jurassic Park, and although Spielberg's masterpiece is even mentioned in the book, that's where the two similarities end. Bible chooses action over science, and brawn over brains, and that's a shame because the concept is under-used and could have potentially resulted in a much richer story.

There's no real explanation as to why the science in the story works. Bible also introduces us to a vast amount of characters in a very short time, and the women, in particular, all tend to blend together making it hard to tell who is who and what their roles are in the story. If I had been reading this instead of listening to it then maybe it would have been easier to give each character a separate voice in my head, but listening to it just results in a jumble of characters all doing very action orientated things very quickly.

I very much enjoyed Andrew B. Wehrlen's narration of the book. Although I did feel he rushed a lot, and I was grateful for the Audible player's ability to slow it down to a more manageable pace.

He has the perfect voice to draw you into a story and I will be looking out for more of his narration work in the future. Overall, if you're looking for a thrilling action-packed blockbuster, then look no further than The Flipside.
