For the first time, I found Victoria's handling of a part of this expansive story to be erratic and not as flowing as she usually is with her writing. Every time I thought the story was going in one direction, it would quickly shift and move to another. I was never sure where we were going with Sin. I appreciated his misfortunes, his desire to pursue his poetry, and his need for a muse, but I was left confused at times. The last scene was cute and I admit to smiling but I did not get a belly laugh out of it.

The epilogue is important and necessary to understanding where Victoria will be taking Sin in his story with Salime. Despite my criticisms of this naughty Devilish Vignette - and it is! Thanks for telling us about the problem. Return to Book Page. Preview — Devil in the Making by Victoria Vane. In this first of three prequels to the award-winning Devil DeVere series, we meet Ludovic, Ned, and Simon as youths in this riotous Georgian romp written in the tradition of Fielding's Tom Jones.

Since their first meeting at Westminster, Ned, Simon, and DeVere had forged an iron-clad bond that had maintained them through nearly six years. From the outset, Ludovic's scandalous family secrets had set him apart from the other aristocratic scions as an "untouchable. Likewise, Simon Singleton's poetic proclivities had instantly made him the bullies' mark, and even Edward Chambers' great size had served as little deterrent for the upper classmen's taunts when accompanied by adolescent awkwardness and a broad North Country drawl.

By the end of the first form, however, DeVere's finely honed shell of arrogance, Ned's increasing brawn, and Sin's rapier wit, had given birth to an unholy triumvirate that came to wreak perpetual and unchallenged havoc upon Westminster School. Now, it appeared their illustrious reign had come to an inglorious end.

Intent on serving up revenge on their tyrannical schoolmaster, a prank with the king's lion goes comically awry, leading to a startling chain of events. I've had the pleasure of reading all of Ms.

Vane's stories and have enjoyed every one of them. She writes historical romance in a way that makes it fun, sexy, sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes joyous, but always entertaining! To be honest, I enjoy her stories so much that I was more than a bit sad while reading The Devil's Match , thinking it was the final book in the series, so when I learned that there would be a series of vignettes focusing on Lud's early years, I was very, very happy!

Please note that this is not a romance, but if you love historical reads with characters who jump off the page and refuse to be ignored, then do yourself a favor and pick up the The Devil DeVere series. You will not be disappointed! This, the first of The Devilish Vignettes leading up to the series, turned out to be so much more than I had hoped for, and I'm looking forward to reading The Trouble with Sin , the next vignette! DeVere's finely honed shell of arrogance, Ned's increasing brawn, and Sin's rapier wit, had given birth to an unholy triumvirate that came to wreak perpetual and unchallenged havoc upon Westminster School.

At nineteen years of age we see the brash, irresponsible, rebellious devil in-the-making. And yet even at this young age he displays just and honorable characteristics that reveal his true depths. With Ned and Simon, DeVere manages to finagle his way into the Royal Menagerie late one night intent on 'borrowing' a bear to play a youthful prank on one of the school masters.

Finding bears are no longer kept, they settle on a lion. I've read everything Victoria Vane has written. She is one of the most talented authors of historical romance, able to write stories with differing tones ranging from fun, comedic romps like this one, to the darkly bleak and realistic underbelly of the Georgian era to the downright erotic. Devil in the Making is a wonderful, fun and yet sometimes grim look into the background of Ludovic DeVere, showing us a glimpse into his young life and family that so influenced the man he was to become.

Boys will be boys and DeVere What a treat seeing Ludovic, Ned and Simon as young lads! Of course DeVere is the wily leader of this mischievous "band of brothers"! It's a fun and telling tale of two men we've grown to love in the The Devil DeVere series, Ludovic and Ned, and we also get a glimpse of Simon, the hero of the next book in the series.

Ned's charming and the voice of reason, even back in the day, and of course DeVere manages to get himself into loads of trouble, but you can't help but love him. He has a heart of gold, and is the most honorable of men, which is saying something since his father is a vile despicable creature, who has no conscience what so ever! Victoria Vane knows how to use words to weave a short tale into a satisfying story, that's rich in detail and dialogue, witty and heartwarming, and never fails to leave the reader smiling!

Mischief and mayhem follow in their wake as he involves his friends in some hilarious shenanigans involving: Not to mention a I'm not sure how Ms Vane does it, but there's real depth to DeVere's character despite the constraints of this short story. Meeting his father and mother, we get an insight into the family dynamics that must have had a profound influence in shaping the man he became. There are also glimpses of those admirable qualities he has always sought to conceal; his generosity, his deep loyalty to his friends and his personal code of honour. It's uproariously entertaining, wickedly bawdy and comes with a heavenly dose of the mouth-watering Devere!!

The story line was very good for such a short story and had really nothing to do with romance. Considering that I still gave it a 5 star rating with no romance, no heat and being as short as it was really is quite an amazing thing for me to do. It's just the way Victoria writes that does it for me. She has such a way of putting words to paper that really captivates me and keeps me wanting more.

It really makes you appreciate and see how Ludovic came to his vices and way of life and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this glimpse of the past. You should note, as Ms Vane states, this is not a romance but there is some minor heated moments with the lion trainer. And even in this short tale, approximately 60 pages, you can see the attention to detail of the Georgian period that Ms Vane pours into her lovely writing.

If you have never read anything by Victoria Vane, this is a great place to start as I guarantee you will be eager to see how Ludovic ends up with his happily ever after.

I loved this short story that gave us a look into Simon Singleton's younger years along with Ned and the Devil Devere himself.

I know I can not wait to see him fall: If you are new to her writing, this works well as a stand alone but as this is just a prequel of what is to come, there is no romance or solid conclusion.

I enjoyed seeing a bit more of the solid friendship between Ludovic and Ned and how all their antics together change their lives forever. Even though this is short, it is well written, well thought out and executed brilliantly. Moreover, my natural inclination to licentiousness is decidedly incompatible with a theological vocation. With my two great passions being poetry and women of easy virtue, not necessarily in that order, I fear all combines to make me an exceedingly poor candidate for the clergy.

This review will appear at Romantic Historical Book Lovers Longtime friends are a rare and delicious treat. They pull pranks, act without thinking, and wreak havoc on those around them. In The Trouble with Sin we find our resident poet, Sin, in trouble with his parents. Sin has other ideas. He uses his power over words to make a few coins to make up for the coin his parents no longer give him. Now, he just has to keep his parents from finding out! I found myself snickering at the predicaments Sin found himself in.

His parents have other ideas and he rebels. I was giggling and few times I laughed out loud. I also felt bad for him. We rarely get to meet the main characters of books we love in their early years. In the Devilish Vignettes, Victoria Vane gives us that history. We get the story of their early years before they found the loves of their lives. It gives us more insight into their characters and makes us love them all the more.

The Trouble with Sin is not a romantic story. This Devilish Vignette will only add to his story when it comes out. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Man these guys seem to be a magnet for trouble and Simon is no exception! Simon is a poet and a lover of all things female. His exploits with DeVere have gotten him in trouble at school and with his parents. Poor Simon can't catch a break with the ladies as they all take advantage of him and that gets him in more trouble.

Devilish Vignettes 2 INTRO Have you ever started reading a new story or novel, and instantly, your mind produces theme music or a score to accompany the characters? He finds a way to thumb his nose at his overbearing father and straight-laced mother by indulging in his favorite illicit pastime, and earning an income, when his allowance is cut off. Sin soon learns that without the protection of his friends, the price of false independence is high and the cost is not worth the fleeting defiance he expresses towards his parents.

The language is strong and the content is adult themed, bursting at the seams with the seedier elements of London, particularly Covent Garden, and the skin trade. Except to tell you that in terms of sexual content, lust is verbally expressed but kept behind doors, and this works quite well with the flavor of the writing.

By no means was I disappointed by the less visual aspects. If Ned embodies strength, character, and honesty, DeVere, beauty, lust and wisdom, then Sin recalls creativity, sensuality and innocence; the inner-child lured away by forbidden enticement to discover burns, bites and scrapes, yet always the sweetness of Mother is there to sweeten the sting.

Upon reaching adulthood, Sin finds the world a deadlier foe, and Her weapons are avarice, violence and heartache; womanly companionship is fleeting and not constant as Mother, yet modest Love evades him as her gaudy sister, Infatuation lures him away. To revisit, again and again, the fragrant alcove where first Erato, did lure him to her dewy bosom with lascivious words exhaled from ambrosia-perfumed breath.
