Mar 19, Jim Fonseca rated it really liked it Shelves: An historical novel set in Italy during World War I around Translated from the Italian. The main character, a young teen-aged boy, is an orphan. He lives with his grandparents, an aunt, and servants. He loves his grandfather and his aunt as substitute parents.

True event — from Wiki: Of the 1, people on board, 1, died. His family lives in the big mansion in a small village in northern Italy. They are the aristocrats disliked by the villagers. Naturally when, first the German invaders, and later the Austrians, take over the town, their villa is picked to house the invading officers. Their estate becomes the encampment for soldiers, horses, mules, tanks and a hospital for the wounded. The invaders take over the church and rape several young women in the church for a week.

He preaches fire and brimstone accompanied by his breath of sulfur. Although we have one extended scene focused on the horrors of those wounded in war, the story is really one of family dynamics. The grandmother is quite a character. The young boy has his own love interest, an older experienced woman in the village. Along with one of the farm hands, they both get involved in helping the resistance. The family develops a code based on shutters and colors of hanging laundry that is viewed daily by a low-flying resistance plane.

Eventually they are found out and the final drama is that some or all of the men will be executed — the young boy, the grandfather and the farm hand. I had not heard of that award, so I looked it up and it is the result of an interesting process from Wiki: These books are called il Premio Selezione Campiello. Then a jury of readers called Giuria dei lettori representing different social, cultural and professional groups from each region of Italy, each with one vote, decides the winner of the selection.

Paolo gets involved in the resistance with his family and at times doesn't seem to really understand what is happening around him , but he's educated pretty quickly as German army take over the family villa and then the Austrians. They become "guests " in their own house.

Of course their lives are impacted and none more so than what happens to young girls in the village. But I wasn't sure how much different their lives might have been had the soldiers not taken over their home. They all seem to come and go as they please. I liked Paolo and the quirky people in his life but I never felt a connection with them until close to the end when the action picked up and I could see the characters more clearly.

I wanted to read the book because it's author won the Campiello Prize in Italy, and there are great authors among the winners. The title, I have to confess, put me off a bit. It certainly isn't attractive! Their home is invaded by the enemy army and they This book took off very slowly. The characters are very well described: Paolo Spada, the orphaned grandson. Nancy and Guglielmo, his quirky grandparents, Donna Maria his aunt. And last but not least, Don Lorenzo, the priest. The plot ins't just about a war and what it entails for all of the Spadas. It's a coming of age story, as well as a family story. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest opinion. I would credit that to the main person Paolo, he was 17, but he still had hope of a future without war. He still has time to fall in love, or lust with someone. And his light makes the book lighter. He lives with his quirky grandparents.

Jan 12, Marta rated it really liked it Shelves: Set in the Italian countryside during WW1, Molesini's novel has the vibe of a Guiseppe Tornatore movie, and not because he is also Italian. The setting more than flavors the story- it gives clearly defined roles for those in the manor and the village, and is both a trap and means of escape during the war. Not All Bastards are from Vienna charms from the beginning, and maintains its warmth even as devastating events slip in and begin to build in intensity.

It is hard to have both experiences at the same time. It lets the horrid events of war sink in while one's guard is down, like finding out your delicious coffee drink was laced with anti-freeze. My only quibble is that the end was too abrupt for me. One minute I was living among Paolo and his family, the next I had the door shut in my face.
