The kitchens at both Bess Bistro W. We have it on good authority that these ladies are turning out some remarkable food. It would be great to see a representative of Austin rock Top Chef. The only thing Keen left out was the usual beer selection: Lately, it seems like comer stores in this town are more likely than not to have a decent microbrew selection - and a select few are just flat-out over the top.
I first noticed this trend when I moved to the Crestview neighborhood in North Central Austin 14 years ago. Indeed, those two now seem rather pedestrian in comparison to some others. I decided to take a look around Austin and explore this phenomenon. What follows are the best of what I found. With each, I tried to list examples of what really sets the store apart for me: Please find this article on austinchronicle.
Beer fridge door handles made from tap handles More clearly a convenience store but still pushing the envelope like Whip In, Live Oak Market no relation to the Live Oak Brewing Company is another South Austin treasure. Singh animatedly showed me the many things that set his store apart - a tasty deli, a soda machine featuring only sodas made with real sugar, lots of locally made products, Sabbath on the stereo - but I was there for the beer. We keep the beer cooler clean, because we can.
We never let anything expire. And since I moved here, it just keeps getting better. This place is a superlative exam- ple why. That tiny little Citgo station on Anderson? And hot Indian food. Yes, you read that right. So they bought more and developed a reputation as a beer store, which is now bordering on legendary. Topiwala kicked out the Jolt and gas pumps and replaced it with lots of organic and locally made products. They added a kitchen so his mom could start serving up tasty Indian food. I was sad to hear it has since been drained. The selection is just unreal, drawn from all corners of the world, although it was a Houston brew that pleased me the most: Topiwala plans to expand even further by becoming a brewpub.
Beer buyer Raz Mehasania is serious. We always try to stay ahead on things like limited editions, special editions, and collaborations. Need a sixer after swimming at the springs or kite-flying at Zilker Park? Or maybe you just want one? They looked pretty busy. Rows and rows of single bottles Never Seen Before: This was the first place that showed me just how mind-blowing a corner store can be when it really commits itself, and it makes me wish I were still a Hyde Park res- ident.
An awesome new addition: And yes, they have the make-your-own-six-pack option. In that article, the new owners told me they decided to get just one of everything from their distributors, and now they have about choices. Whether you want the best of the locals or some fine Belgian brews, I doubt any place in Austin has a greater awesomeness-per-square-foot quotient. And as the name suggests, they have a far-above-average food selection as well. As I was leaving on recent visit, the guy in front of me was getting a pack of Bud Light Lime.
And when I spied a neon Boulevard Brewing Co. Inside, seven of nine coolers are devoted to microbrews and imports, with some very eclectic options and a large wine selection. After people go to those places, they go through us. Perfectly situated for some take-home beers after swimming at Deep Eddy. Brodie Park Market A Brodie , Good Luck Food Mart Guadalupe , This was a cruddy little Circle K when I lived in this neighborhood - no longer. Monarch Food Mart E. This is another neighborhood where I used to live. There was certainly no Belhaven Scottish Stout here back then.
The Bread Basket Justin, Six coolers, plus two racks of warm beer and friendly owners. Hyridge Grocery Hyridge, It has a modest selection, but hey, how many stores this size carry Ommegang Abbey Ale? The salad bar is pretty terrific, too. Also, try chicken-fried steak, wings, or Cuban nachos while you catch a game on TV. Try the Love at First Sight roll.
The small, stellar menu includes meat loaf and fried toma- toes, transcending typical bar fare. The menu walks a tasty line between deli standards and gourmet innovation. One block east of This place is worth the drive. Wash it all down with a frozen sangria or two. NATURAL This juice bar, bakery, health food store, and vegetari- an Mexican restaurant in one is your one- stop shop for soybean ceviche, pineapple empanadas, and queen bee royal jelly. The Philly Cheesesteak is also terrific.
Stop by for take- out on your way to Pace Bend Park. The ambience is roman- tic, too. Be sure to try the fish bor- racho: Order the fish fried, blackened, or charbroiled, and sample a variety of side dishes. The lamb with hot cumin, mapo doufu, and boiled beef with spicy sauce are all excellent. The daily buffet always features fried catfish, vegetables, and a salad bar. Not valid with any other. Must mention coupon at time of ordering. Try the chicken-fried steak. THRICE offers a nice selection of omelets, salads, and sandwiches, baking all breads in-house and using local ingredients.

Commercial Kings arrived in my mailbox. Now, I admire good documentaries, and I like comedies. I was prepared to be annoyed. Commercial Kings fun; it was - in its own modest way - enlightening, too. These pieces, along with their odd other videos, have garnered 98 million hits and counting.
The goal in each episode of Commercial Kings is to help a small, locally owned busi- ness create a commercial for all the usual reasons - the company wants to expand its clientele, get its name out, and drum up more business. As self-taught filmmakers, Rhett and Link take a near-anthropological approach to the task, interviewing clients and their customers - and in one instance, becoming clients - while asking lots of ques- tions that might not get asked were they not holding cameras.
For example, when they start research for the commercial they plan to make for an African-American hair salon, prickly race differences quickly bubble to the surface. Rhett and Link approach each of their subjects collegially - not as the ultimate fount of knowledge, and not as the clueless butt of a joke. Rhett and Link are there to learn as much about their subjects as they are to identify the comic hooks that will ultimately make a memorable com- mercial.
Makes one wonder what it would be like if everyone just asked a few heartfelt questions - with or without the benefit of a camera - in order to better understand their neighbors and move past their assumptions. Future episodes of this charming, part series feature Holiday Hotel for Cats, a get- away for cats whose owners are traveling; Make Me a Pro Wrestler, a training facility for pro-wrestler hopefuls; Fountain of Health, a routine colon care spa; and Bury Me Naturally, a business offering eco-friendly burials.
Rhett and Link will live-tweet during all first runs of new episodes throughout the season. As always, stay tuned. Follow TV Eye on Twitter: E-mail Belinda Acosta at tveye austinchronicle. Ah, summer in Austin. The mercury is on the brink of popping off its glass cherry, the wind is lusty and seemingly ceaseless, and clothing is becoming more and more optional by the hour. Austin has always been a city in heat - Men's Health ranked the No. Cut to this aristocratic family in France and their night of wild debauchery in the face of the end of the world.
The famous mural on the old Varsity Theater on the Drag is being altered forever. There will also be a new 12th frame. Their dynam- ic is still on display. And porn is the ultimate exploitation move. Saturday ; June 25, The eastern entrance also gets a restoration, with a re-creation of the original Varsity Theater sign. However, several familiar images - including the band of clowns performing in front of the old theatre, the silhouettes of camera crews, and the smaller portraits of Greta Garbo and Humphrey Bogart - will sim- ply be painted over.
This is not the first time that the mural has been altered since it was painted in Lowry himself repainted some sec- tions over the years, including a major resto- ration in the late Eighties. When no cars will stop for her, she flings herself into the path of the next oncoming car and forces it to stop. And its story about a seedy private eye who stumbles onto a huge mystery is the stuff of film-noir antiheroes. Fear and paranoia drive the film, and the threat of nuclear holocaust underpins most of the action.
Women may fall into his arms, but they also recite to him his deficien- cies. It fits perfectly into the prevailing postwar fears and creates real life-and-death paranoia for the characters. Rather than a maudlin bit of navel-gazery, though, the film is a joyous love letter to the father, a firework-burst of love and admiration for the man who demonstrated to Mills what it means to eat the peach. The perplexed Oliver must then renegotiate and relearn who he is in relation to the people in his life.
Hal is the bellwether of all of these explora- tions, even as he must come to terms with his own terminal cancer diagnosis. Beyond this basic narrative arc, Beginners is an exploration of the ways in which your generation shapes your reality. All of these competing stories are the back- drop for the film.
How do you tell the story of an extraordinary life, one rooted in compromise and deception but ultimately free, joyous, and steeped in love? And how do you tell that story alongside the story of how culture turns ordi- nary ideas and images into era-defining myths that have the potential to destroy lives? This approach allows him to hold these two themes in tension with each other, using the broader theoretical ideas to help unlock the very human, very personal story of a father and son relearning how to love. After the elder Mills died, the son catapulted himself into a heady exploration of, well, everything.
Really, everything came back to me, including [Roland] Barthes, whom I loved in college. In Mythologies, pub- lished in , Barthes examines the various layers of meaning attached to words and symbols - what he calls myths - among the bourgeoisie. Red wine, for example, is considered the quintes- sential marker of French national identity, when in reality it is simply fermented grape juice pack- aged as a commodity to be consumed; further complicating this celebratory view of red wine, Barthes argues, is the exploitation of Third World countries like Algeria a French colony until as part of the production of the meaning- ful drink.
The same idea holds true for contemporary American culture: What is it like to be in love in ? What are your emotional options in each time frame? The emotional options in were utterly different from the emotional options I have now. I could have called this movie The History of Love. It would be a hell of a lot easier to describe, for one. The history of love for Hal involves capitulating to the demands of the dominant culture in - that he marry a woman and have babies with her.
Then, 44 years later, he gets to overwrite that history with a new beginning, embarking upon life as a gay man who need not hide or fear arrest. His new history unfurls like a rainbow flag, a sign the movie sug- gests has a more hopeful meaning attached to it. It looks like a mother who sulked and acted out in strange ways, whose eyes yearned for some deeper connection.
It looks like a string of failed relationships, a broken strand of serial monogamy until at last he embarks upon a ten- tative love affair with Anna played by Melanie Laurent, who was so deliciously vengeful in Inglourious Basterds. His role is so profoundly immediate in that everybody has parents, and most people will outlive their parents, and some of them will lose a parent to cancer.
The stakes, then, are high for the actor who dares to portray the fictional version of Mike Mills. I listened to his voice, and I watched him, and I really loved being with him. I also worked very closely with Christopher and got very close to him. I felt like I could relate to looking after him and thinking of losing him. And then there was just being there with him in the scenes, and as Mike was with his dad, reacting to what he saw. But it was quite easy because I was working with great actors and a great director.
I listened to his voice, and l watched him, and l really loved being with him. The draw- ings Oliver conjures while he lingers in his studio were done by Mills himself; Mills would start the drawings, and McGregor would either complete them or replicate them as part of the process of studying the character. The band for whom Oliver is supposed to design an album cover, the Sads, is an actual Los Angeles-based quartet for whom Mills has designed a number of album covers and gig posters. All of these touches of verisimilitude deepen the tribute to the elder Mills while messily blurring the lines between truth and fiction - sort of like life itself.
My dad com- ing out was one of the best things to happen to me as his straight son, just because he became so much more alive. See Film Listings, p. Council on At-Risk Youth www. Buy tickets at www. I worked about half a day and then started looking at ads again, thinking, what job would put me inside the most? I called up an electrician, and they were hiring. It provided steady enough work that he enticed his high school sweetheart, Kathie, from her lush Oregon habitat to hot Central Texas and convinced her to stay, marry, raise a family, and start her own business.
Most of all, it offered him the opportunity to compose and perform, if not in the style of his beloved Poi Dog Pondering or his youthful worship of metal bands, then following a muse that came naturally to him, his guitar, and any of the multitude of instruments he plays, banjolele to the toy piano. His day job also allowed him the modest residual payoff from songs appearing in television shows and films such as Playing Mona Lisa.
The brisk early Saturday afternoon buzzes around him. As he looks down to close the screen, his thick beard forms a dark ruff around his neck and a square plastic pager sitting beside him comes to life, flashing fitfully with its sole purpose: The table is ready. I spent the year before co-writing with Danes in Austin, and that taught me a lot about co-writing in general, so I was ready from the minute we got there.
That put me in a posi- tion where I was taking a lead role. The experi- ence exhilarated all who witnessed: Sever and the castle dwellers fairly bounced off the walls in the throes of a triumphant performance, giddy and breathless, laughing, crying. I know he has a varied reputation in this town.
The conversation wanders into oddball areas, like being sur- prised to find himself raising children in Texas. He works his ass off! To me, that means that everybody should. Where most singer-songwriters shy away from the folk tradition, Matt Sever embraces it fully. He employs a broad range of acoustic instruments - horns, glockenspiel, cello, banjo - that lends his songs an organic backdrop, rickety yet near-per- fect settings for his sincere, quirky observations of life.
The defining debut was less representative of his compositional ambitions than of an anomalous mel- low. While others emulated Stax and the sound of young America, Saadiq embodied the spirit. He said he assumed his doc- tor had sent her and thus complied, and it was over in two minutes, and she was gone.

The state agency is facing a In February , the department proposed a budget reduction by eliminating the merit pay, reducing land acquisition, canceling an off-road vehicle park on the Canadian River, and other cuts. Harvey stressed that there has been no legis- lative mandate to transfer or close any parks, and there is no deadline.
Of course, this threat comes at a time when cities and counties are as cash-strapped as the state. Losing the parks would mean less money spent in area restaurants, stores, and gas sta- tions. In the last 11 years, the number of state parks has dropped from including 18 historic sites trans- ferred to the Texas Historical Commission in to Some of the previous transfers have worked out.
