Were young people — teenagers — being targeted?
Or was it just coincidence? Keeping the strands in the right order in her mind were proving to be a challenge. From the very first page the pace was electric; the tension palpable and the plot brilliantly done. View all 3 comments. In this book Rachel and her partner DS Mark Bricknall travel to Edinburgh to look into the case of a 16 year old girl whose death has been ruled an accident. Her father has asked them to take a closer look as he believes that his daughter was murdered. On their arrival Rachel and Mark discover that there was another similar death 2 years before. Their investigation takes them into the dark, hidden side of the cities nightlife where nobody is who they seem. While all of this is going on Rachel is coming to terms with a part of her past that has resurfaces, which will change her life forever.
This is an intense and dark story but one that makes you just want to keep reading. I love the characters in this series, Rachel is a strong, tough woman who will do anything to get to the truth. Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book to read and enjoy in exchange for my honest opinions View all 6 comments. I loved this book so much. Another Bookouture book that had me on edge of my seat! The story was so riveting and full of twists and turns. Every turn of events the author through in was intense.
Officer Bricknell is awesome and funny and always eating! Tha I loved this book so much. Thank you Netgalley, the author and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. May 14, michelle rated it it was amazing. I have loved the first in the series so I was intrigued to find out what the second was all about. The girl was beautiful and had everything she could wish for so, why would she kill herself. Detective inspector Prince and sidekick Detective Sergeant Mark Brickall head up to Edinburgh to go over the case and find out what actually happened to Emily. While doing this they find out about another student who also died in the same circumstances, Bruno Martinez.
As the pair delve deeper into the case, they find out that this case involves not only about murder but Rape and Paedophilia too. The story continues to tell us about the rocky relationship between Rachel and her sister and her mother and the arrival of her son Joe after 18 years. This is another brilliant episode of this series. I enjoyed it very much. I loved the relationship between Prince and Bickall. Also, was there a bit of jealousy there when Rachel went out with Giles Denton. Is there a relationship forming?
I will have to wait for book three. May 14, Renita D'Silva rated it it was amazing. This series is shaping u to be one of my absolute favourites! I read and loved the first book in this amazing series and this one is even better! With plenty of twists, brilliantly assured writing, this author takes us on a thrilling journey with this stunning story. So much more than a crime procedural - this book makes you ponder and question, it makes you think. May 05, Elaine Tomasso rated it it was amazing. Police Scotland has declared it an accident but her rich and powerful father believes it was murder. Arriving in Edinburgh on what they think will be a box ticking exercise it doesn't take long for her and her sergeant, DS Mark Brickall to realise there is more to the case than a drunken accident. I thoroughly enjoyed Now She's Gone and Ms James and her protagonists are fast becoming must reads for me. I like the mixture of strong investigation and Rachel's car crash private life and the straightforward third person narrative which allows the reader to live the former with her and make the same guesses and assumptions.
It also makes the many twists and turns more surprising and gives them more impact as the reader has no extra information. The plotting and pacing are excellent with a relatively simple diplomatic errand widening into, well, something completely different and far more complex. There are reveals in almost every chapter so it gets very compulsive as you just have to keep turning the pages to see where it's going next. I half guessed the perpetrator and motive early on but with so many other things going on to grab my attention it wasn't the disaster this kind of guess can be in other books.
In fact it kept me reading even more avidly to see if Rachel would reach the same conclusion. I love the slow build up of a procedural where everyone is a suspect until hard work starts to narrow the field. Ms James does it beautifully. Rachel Prince is a great protagonist. Smart, savvy and good at her job she can't carry it over to her personal life, which seems to be a never ending cycle of poor decisions.
It's what makes her such a human character and so likeable. I also love her banter with her partner DS Mark Brickall which has a real ring of authenticity. I'm not so sure about the portrayal of DI Morag Sillars as it's a bit too close to authentic for any Glaswegian to be happy about! Now She's Gone is a great read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
Jun 09, Monica Mac rated it really liked it. This was a really terrific read, so many twists and turns in this book! Emily is the bright daughter of a rich Dutch couple who was billeted with a couple in the UK temporarily. She ends up dead, her death is ruled suicide, but there is something about her case which raises a lot of questions. When Rachel Prince does a bit of digging, she discovers that there is something a bit strange about the couple Emily stayed with I found this an interesting, complex, storyline indeed, and I particularl This was a really terrific read, so many twists and turns in this book!
I found this an interesting, complex, storyline indeed, and I particularly enjoyed the Dutch parts of it because my family are Dutch and I could HEAR Dries' accent in my head, which added to my enjoyment of the book as well. I give this book a well deserved 4. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. Sep 23, Shalini rated it it was amazing. Fabulous book with a fast pace and intense plot.
Detective Rachel Prince kept me rooted to the story. Her past came rushing through as the murder in the present. A murder 2 years ago linked to this murder gives it a serial killer-y vibe. My second book by Alison James, had me living the book, as much as I did the first one.. Rachel as the main character is dynamic in all her scenes, the twists increasing the adrenaline in turn. May 18, Els rated it it was amazing. I never thought it would be possible that my reading list could get any longer, but once again I have discovered an author that I want to follow.
Although I suspected somebody rather soon and for once I was right , it did not diminish the reading pleasure at all, because the story was so well constructed and gripping. We also get a glimpse of her personal life, but at the same time the author never lets your attention be pulled away too muc I never thought it would be possible that my reading list could get any longer, but once again I have discovered an author that I want to follow.
We also get a glimpse of her personal life, but at the same time the author never lets your attention be pulled away too much from the crime scene. She always makes sure that we keep our eye on the ball. The only thing left to do was to read and enjoy, which I did. Thank you Alison James, Bookouture and Netgalley. I really like this series! There are many twists and a few red herrings.
Overall the story is well done. I listened to the audio book and Jan Cramer is the absolute best. Her accents and range of voices made the characters real! I recommend this series for readers of police procedural stories. And definitely listen to the audiobook. May 31, Louise rated it it was amazing. At first it looked like a tragic accident. As well as trying to solve the case, Rachel receives a shock from her past that makes the loss of the teenager much more personal to her.
Alison Ja At first it looked like a tragic accident. I loved the relationship between Rachel and Brickall, the harmless banter and the fact that the Sargeant never stopped eating gave some lighter even humorous moments. It was good that Rachel had an interesting backstory and you really felt that you got to know another side to the tough, straight-talking detective. The pace throughout kept me completely hooked and, for me, the conclusion was satisfying. I shall definitely keep my eyes peeled for more books by Alison James and this one comes very highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with a copy which I have reviewed honestly. Jun 02, Joanna Park rated it really liked it. The author has a great way of gradually increasing the tension and intrigue in the book so before I knew what was happening I was hooked. The two main characters were absolutely brilliant and a duo I hope the author includes in another of her books.
Their easy relationship and the banter between them was great to read about. It helped to break up the tension and lead to some very funny moments. The fact they brought a dog around on their investigations was hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud at some of the things that happened as a result.
It was fascinating to learn a little more about what the festival is like and what type of things you can do there. The author highlights the interesting differences between the English and Scottish justice systems. This is the second book in the series but the first ive read.
I think it works well as a standalone as anything you need to know about the characters past is explained. Thanks to Noelle Horton, Bookouture and Netgalley for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog blitz. But I love it. Look, drama and angst can honestly be so good, when pulled off right, and Teherah Mafi knows how to pull it off. I love how invested I felt in the characters and everything that was happening and the romance. That angst that just actually gives you a physical and emotional reaction but in a.. I am a major angst demon and Teheram Mafi fed me so, so well.
Teherah Mafi's writing is so beautiful and the imagery is so vivid. The setting and emotions of the characters are so palpable and I love how she connects character with genre form. The way she uses the first person point of view and journal style entry-esque format to construct the characters and destabilise our perceptions of this is really heckin clever. And I love how Teherah Mafi used form to explore how she is unreliable.
The lessening of the crossed out lines and the implication that, as Juliette gains friends and confidence, she also gains trust in her perceptions and emotions is just a really beautiful and unique way to utilise form. I am just, a ginormous hoe for authors doing real clever things with narrative point of view and genre form and Teheram Mafi does BOTH. I once again, have to respect the hell out of her. I love a bad bitch? I really love that she started out this really naive character but she's becoming more strong willed and developing all this fortitude.
I love how she went from letting people push her around to really taking a stand for what she believes needs to be done for her own self care here. I'm talking about the romance there. Juliette gets so much shit from reviewers here and I don't know why? I think she's super interesting I seriously love how unreliable her narration is at times, it makes everything much more interesting. I cannot believe how much my mind changed on him. I still think he's a bit of a dick and problematic as fuck but I also His point of view and backstory were expanded on a lot here and it definitely strengthened his character.
Again, a testament to Mafi's clever writing and incorporation of narrative point of view because she was really able to shift how we view Warner without it feeling unnatural. Also, we respect a mans with style and flair and that is what Warner has. I was never totally sold on Adam and now I like him His behaviour int his book was a little bit icky and I don't love how possessive he is and how uncontrollable he can be.
His outbursts really annoyed me and I hated that he wilfully kept Juliette in the dark about things that concerned her. Essentially, if this was I would be sporting a TeamWarner shirt right now. We stan one 1 man only! Honestly Kenji made me laugh out loud and he's supposed to be the comic relief so that made sense. But he genuinely is funny which is nice because I hate when the 'funny' character is.. I also think Kenji's character got so much important expansion though that moved him beyond the realm of the tropey funny character and made him more real.
The reveal of his backstory and history with Castle was one of my favourite scenes of the book. It creeps on you, quiet and still, sits by your side in the dark, strokes by your hair as you sleep. It wraps itself around your bones, squeezing so tight you almost can't breathe. It leaves lies in your heart, lies next to you at night, leaches the light out of every corner. It's a constant companion, clasping your hand only to yank you down when you're struggling to stand up. I found the first half of this book really slow and kinda boring. Nothing was really happening and the angst around Juliette and Adam's relationship just annoyed me because I don't like Adam enough to care about his emo behaviour.
Only when Warner showed up and the plot kicked in did I really find this more interesting. Unfortunately though, it was too little too late. I also think the side characters weren't really developed enough and it made the stakes less important. None of the side characters held any weight for me because they were barely explored and because of that, their precarious situation had little emotional impact on me.
Because of that, the gravity of the plot felt much less apparent and most of the tension in the middle section was lost. All you people who said I would love Warner by the end can pat yourselves on the back for a job well done because I guess you were right. I really cannot wait to read Ignite Me, I've heard it's the best in the series and I just am so ready for Juliette to become even more of the badass she was always meant to be. View all 16 comments.
What is wrong with me? It's definitely a wonderful book, it has so many things happening, I love how everyone prepares for war and I definitely love the moments of Warner and Juliette in this book, they are gold. OMG, it has killed me all over again! This time definitively I have to give it more stars, I'm falling in love again with this books Re-read: This time definitively I have to give it more stars, I'm falling in love again with this books again and I adore the sensation Original Review: This is a beautiful story: But words will live as long as people can remember them.
So deep and raw. I confess that this time it took me a while to immerse myself in reading, especially in the beginning. I think the real story begins from the middle forward, because I do not think that the first pages have contributed to much to the plot, I think the introduction of the life of Juliette in Omega Point, her problems to socialize and her relationship with Adam which has repetitive dialogues, that for me, have not led to nowhere I have seemed quite irrelevant and even think they could have talked about it, very clearly, in less pages.
But that's just my opinion, on the other hand, I ended up liking me a lot this book. Let's talk about the incredible about the book! I loved the unexpected things that happen with the powers and the darker twist given to it in this one,I absolutely love the growth of Juliette in this area, she has learned a lot in this book about what is capable of doing, and their use and how and when it is really necessary and useful, I hope with the heart that achieves also grow her personality to be a complete kick ass in the next book: To then let them dry.
To give them a chance to wash out the pain in order to see fresh and clear once again. It has a charming personality, is clear and very decided, and personally think that without his helps Juliette would not have learned anything. I really appreciate that has been persevering with her, he is a great friend too and without count that is always joking taking away the weight to the worst situations, also has achieved to scare me as hell, I hope Tahereh care of him!
And finally, you can imagine, the best Guys I've died and been reborn a thousand times with every word that comes from him , Warner's dialogues with Juliette in this book are fantastic! Not only the dialogues between them have left me speechless, the scenes between them are perfect, are designed and written so magical and so smart, I just saw myself immersed in that world. And the plot twist that takes in their relationship, I just, I loved it! Tahereh has made my heart beat like crazy more than once and I'm so happy.
Vojsk rated it really liked it. Castle, the ruler of the rebellion welcomes them and explains the system of their underground. All the time castle searched for others like him, like Juliette, like Kenji. For others with gifts, talents. And he asks them to join.
They train her, they try to welcome her, but Juliette is still trapped in her own head with her own fears. Warner is still searching for Juliette, every night he Is looking for her. The rebellion is on the move, and war is coming. It has more action and there are more characters to love or hate and more of this world to see. It was addictive and I loved it! But it gets better. She starts to be braver, but she still keeps her wonderful big heart. She is so kind, so lovely. She would protect every innocent person in the world, she would never harm anyone unless she needs to.
It makes him feel restless, helpless. He corners Juliette, pushes her and by that we see that he wants Juliette to stay like she is. A girl that needs to be protected. He was kind to her when no one else was, he protected her, he saved her and he loved her so much.
He is a good guy, a really good guy. But sometimes that is not enough. Warner is the opposite of Adam in the way he treats and sees Juliette. Warner was always the smarter one, intelligent and calculating. He never treats Juliette as if she needs protection. He wants to push her to do more, to be more. He wants to see how she uses her powers, controls them and he wants to see her unafraid of herself. He wants her to be proud, to be strong and still the wonderful kind person she is. Warner is the perfect partner for everything. And the way he loves Juliette makes my heart beat faster.
He makes you laugh when you think you can never laugh again, he makes you think about you in a positive way. He protects you and he supports you in any way possible. Can someone get me a best friend like this? With it there is a hunger for more, but when this hunger, this love could kill you, what do you do then?
In this book we have a lot of Drama, guys. We have tears, we have broken hearts, we have passionate nearly uncontrollable kissing that end in chaos and we have Juliette being absolutely confused with her feelings. Why do you always write so beautifully, so poetic and wonderful? How do you write so many quotes I want to capture on a paper, on my skin, in my heart?
You make me feel so many things for these characters I never get to meet but who feel like real persons to me. I feel loss, pain, heartbreak. I feel love, friendship, kindness and I feel passion. Run, Juliette, run faster, run until your bones break and your shins split and your muscles atrophy and your heart dies because it was always too big for your chest and it beat too fast for too long and run. Run until they drop their fists and their shouts dissolve in the air. Run with your eyes open and your mouth shut and dam the river rushing up behind your eyes. Run until you drop dead.
Make sure your heart stops before they ever reach you. Before they ever touch you. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I like it well enough though. I like how it expanded on the world, even though I didn't necessarily appreciate it. I mean, to be frank, I didn't give two shits about the world. I just wanted me some damn romance and Adam and Warner and Juliette love triangle, plus all the drama that is just so extra.
Me likey that a lot more.
I'd probably like reading about the plot and the world a lot more once I reread it and I stop gagging [2. I'd probably like reading about the plot and the world a lot more once I reread it and I stop gagging for the romance. I like Warner as a character for sure. I don't have the same hatred for him as I did when I finished book one. I just am not convinced of them two as a couple yet, though there scenes together were hot as fuck.
She had better be a fuckin badass in Ignite Me and Warner and Juliette can become this sick power couple Adam, I still love you though. One Tree Hill-in my baby! View all 20 comments. Jun 21, Haleema rated it it was ok Shelves: You'd think that after my dreadful experience of Shatter Me would keep me away from the second book of this series. The cover caught my eye. I wanted to see what other overdone, laughable, simply nonsensical metaphors and similes she had. And this review will do nothing to please those who loved this book.
There was only one reason I decided to read this book. Warner I mentioned in the last review that he had some potential.
Yes, he was cheesy and demented in the first Beware of spoilers! Yes, he was cheesy and demented in the first book, but I wanted to see how he evolved. Because to be honest, he seemed like the type of character that Mafi would put extra special thought into. He seemed a bit interesting and I knew he would evolve in some way.
I knew Juliette was going to stay the same. The girl whose body parts would dangle from impossible places. The girl who couldn't take a proper compliment from another person. Whiny, clueless, extremely gullible. It's safe to say I pretty much loathe her existence. He has a quiet, lethal, hard, military-like attitude.
But he is also a different person with Juliette. He has his inner struggles and his hatred for his father. I felt like the whole book should have been about Warner. He would have been a little more interesting than Juliette's constant whining and weakness. I do want Juliette to end up with no one because she's honestly so insipid Warner. I mean, chapter On the other hand, I won't talk much about Mafi's writing. Because we all know from my review of Shatter Me that I found her style of writing absolutely laughable.
If my high school creative writing teacher were to read My fists are full of unlucky pennies and my heart is a jukebox demanding a few nickles and my head is flipping quarters heads or tails heads or tails heads or tails heads or tails she'd question her existence on earth. Writing heads or tails once is just as effective as writing it three times. However, the writing wasn't as dreadful as it was in the first installment and because of Warner's interesting characterization, I would give this book a 2 out of 5 stars.

I really loved him. Tahereh Mafi has a real gift with words. It's almost crazy how vividly she can describe the most intricate of emotions. She manipulates words with such skill and delicacy that it seems like she can define any complexity, strip every feeling down to its purest, rawest form until it can fully touch our souls and our hearts. Oh wow, look what Tahereh did to me, I'm speaking as if in a trance. I love it when girls kick ass. I despise him as a love interest.
