Blood Bank and Department of Transfusion Medicine

We have used some of the cases in our transfusion teaching rounds at a major California academic teaching hospital and it is being used by colleagues in undergraduate medical schools teaching courses as well. It is easy to read and can be readily adapted to teaching rounds. There is no other book like it currently available that provides such classic cases in transfusion medicine. This book is part of a series "Diagnostic Standards of Care" in laboratory medicine that is edited by the well-published leader in the field Dr Michael Laposata.

Efficient Blood Group Testing for Transfusion Medicine

This is a great case-based book to illustrate important "pearls" in transfusion medicine. Although transfusion medicine is complex, this book is straightforward and easy to read, and it is ideal for pathology residents, transfusion medicine fellows, medical students, or any physician or NP that orders blood products for their patients.

Definitely worth the price, and would also recommend the other books in this series particularly coagulation. I found this an excellent book for getting me to think about real cases based on common errors in transfusion medicine. The book is a series of cases that can be very effectively used to see how well one understands information from standard textbooks.

Cellular therapies

The cases are well written and engaging and I found I had a much more comprehensive understanding of the field by the time I had worked through all 50 cases. I can now more readily recognize problems during morning rounds in transfusion medicine. I bought a copy for a colleague in private practice who does blood bank call and he found it very helpful. So this book seems highly suited for both academics and private practice.

I'm a board certified pathologist looking for a quick, easy review of transfusion medicine. This book does not do it. It's not even good enough for a blood bank student. Don't waste your money. Understand the process of blood collection and the preparation of blood components and plasma derivatives. Learn which tests must be performed to assure safe transfusion.

Transfusion medicine is the field of medicine that encompasses blood banking the collection, preparation, testing, and storage of blood components and plasma derivatives as well as the therapeutic uses of blood components, plasma derivatives, and apheresis technology.

It also includes the collection, storage, and use of hematopoietic and other blood-derived cells. An overview of the steps from collection of the blood to transfusion of its components is shown in Figure 12—1. Briefly with more complete descriptions to follow , blood is collected as whole blood or by apheresis from screened, volunteer donors, and samples of the blood are tested for infectious diseases and to determine the blood type. Whole blood may be fractionated into packed red blood cells RBCs , platelets, and a plasma product.

Alternatively, all 3 components can be collected by apheresis. Plasma can be further processed to provide albumin, clotting factor concentrates, and immunoglobulin preparations. The transfusion of blood components requires testing to be done to establish compatibility between the product and the intended recipient.

Blood components may also be treated to reduce complications of transfusion eg, remove leukocytes to prevent febrile reactions. As complex, biologically derived therapeutic agents, blood components and derivatives are responsible for a variety of potential untoward effects that must be evaluated and managed. The entire process, from blood collection to transfusion and posttransfusion evaluation, is described in this chapter see Figure 12—1.

In the past, the use of paid donors was associated with increased levels of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis. Concerns remain about the impact of significant financial incentives on the frank disclosure of health problems or high-risk behaviors that might disqualify a potential blood donor.
