This edition is based on the manuscript of the arrangement in the Saltykov-Shchedrin Public Library, on the arrangement published by Beliaiev, and on the printed score in volume 21 of The Complete Works of Rimsky-Korsakov, published by Muzgiz in Please feel free to contact us for details. Though no new sources have been available for this new edition, numerous editorial emendations which have prevailed in all previous editions even Urtext editions have now been corrected. No piano part has been handed down; indeed, the original sets of parts probably omitted the piano. The soloist presumably studied his part from the first edition of the solo part, published with the original performance material in The full score did not appear until The sextet version deftly integrates the original wind parts into the string texture. This Urtext edition, edited by the renowned Beethoven scholar Jonathan Del Mar, presents this arrangement for the first time in print.
The musical text is supplemented by an informative Introduction and a Critical Commentary. The principle of contrast in classical solo concertos here makes way for a principle of fusion. Despite an initial difficulty in understanding this work, the Piano Concerto has become one of the most popular pieces in the Romantic repertoire. As did many piano virtuosi at the time, Robert Schumann also dreamt of presenting himself to the public simultaneously as a pianist and composer with his own piano concerto.
He had made several first attempts at an early age. In the years that followed he felt himself increasingly drawn towards the idea of a freer formal conception. The sketch of a single-movement Phantasie finally became the opening movement of the famous work, that is now being published for the first time in a practical Urtext edition. The fingerings were provided by the world-famous pianist Mitsuko Uchida.
