Perhaps the most affecting example of the dichotomy that rules his life occurs when, after having witnessed the most vicious brutalities, he returns to the Bronx and goes shopping with his mother for his first suit. In this stunning, lyrical novel, Doctorow has perfected the narrative voice of a lower-class boy encountering the world surpassing those of the protagonists of Ragtime , Loon Lake and World's Fair.
He falters only in a sentimental, almost fairytale ending that belies the harsh realities by which the narrative is propelled. But so fine and convincing is this story that the reader accepts in its entirety Doctorow's mythical vision, a dark version of the Horatio Alger fable related with a brilliant twist. This is an absorbingly interesting story of a 15 year boy named Billy impressed with the gang of racketeers in his neighborhood of the Broncs, NY, and when he is lucky and smart enough to get to join this local Gang beginning as an errand boy,he lives long enough about a year or two to see his Gang's Boss, and his other Gang members. The only unrealistic characters in the story are the late Boss' former girl friend named Drew, with whom the apparently not-so-young Billy got to know quite intimately, and her never-to-be-seen and ultra wealthy husband.
About years later, near the end of the story and with Billy not involved in the non-exsistant Gang , we are led to believe that Billy has apparently been seeing Drew intimately all along when Drew's chauffeur appears at Billy's door and presented him with "my baby with Drew". This is completely unrealistic and out of character of the new Billy, who in his last years attending some top sand universities should have learned a lot more than simply to be led around by his dick.
For example he could have been attending Law School with the desire of becoming an Attorney General and cleaning up his old boyhood neighborhood of such Gangsters he was once a member of. Great book except for the poor unrealistic ending ending. One person found this helpful. I just finished reading this fantastic novel today and I would rate it as one the best on the topic of american gangsterism circa the 's.
Billy Bathgate is a story about a young, yet street smart Irish kid from the rough and tumble streets of the Bronx, NY and is discovered by the notorious mobster Ducth Schultz while juggling in front of one the Dutchman's beer warehouses. From there, Billy finds a way to insinuate himself into the Dutch Schultz mob,A.
A "The Kosher Nostra". L Doctorow does a great job of making the reader feel as if you were actually living in that time period. The character Billy Bathgate goes from leaving the slums of the Bronx to living in and visiting opulent hotels, riding in classy packards, dining in fancy restaurants and hanging out in cool late night Jazz clubs while smoking pot,as first an apprentice, and finally protege of the mob. He also gets to meet the powerful people in this world such as the mobsters in the Schultz crew: It doesn't end there, the architect of organized crime Lucky Luciano, the cunning Tammany leader Jimmy Hines, and Dutch Schultz's lawyer, the infamous Dixie Davis also make appearances as well.
Of course, no novel about gangsters would be complete without the violence that these hardened criminals lived in,and Doctorow does an adequate job of writing about this side of one the worst killers in mob history. I thought that the writer should have been much more graphic in this area however. Some readers thought that the ending was predictable, but I don't agree. Although, Doctorow's style of writing left me a little confused at times,I really enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down from the first day that I started. I also think that with the right director, and casting this novel would make a much better film than the original with Dustin Hoffman.
I am sure it has all been said elsewhere but Doctorow was a superb story teller and writer. Having read nearly all his books, I have never been disappointed and this particular book is a great take on a historical event. The story never falters and your interest never slips. If you read just one of his books, this is a perfect one with which to become familiar. Doctorow writes the story of a young boy who gets involved with the Dutch Schultz mob beautifully. The story is very interesting.
Although he is telling it in a straightforward way, his writing is very descriptive and you can visualize the situations and the venues.
Some of the passages are worth reading over and over and could probably be used as an example fin a creative writing workshop.. Doctorow is a master of run on sentences, but once you get into the story, you can see why he chose this style of writing. It actually fits the premise well.
Very enjoyable story and the ending is unexpected. Try it for an entertaining read.
Before begin reading it I thought tha t it was going to be another novel full of crime and gory details. As a progressed on my reading i found it exceptionally detailed about life in New York during the 's. I truly enjoyed the development of the story.
