The book is extremely well organized and comprehensive despite its relatively short length -- pages excluding references and the index. Goodwin opens his book with an overview chapter on the distribution and tectonic setting of Precambrian crust, in which he describes his methodology and provides brief synopses of the various cratons.
Chapters 2 through 5 are chronological -- the Archean, the Early Proterozoic, Mid-Proterozoic, and Late Proterozoic -- in he which provides excellent summaries of each period with timelines and discusses each craton in more detail. Each chapter is organized in the same manner, so it is possible to trace the evolution of a given craton throughout the Precambrian simply by jumping from one chapter to the next and reading the relevant sections.
Principles of Precambrian Geology presents a succinct and readily comprehensible guide to the Precambrian geology of the Earth. The broad yet authoritative coverage effectively puts the Precambrian into perspective and the author draws on his wide-ranging personal experience to give the reader real insight into our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Earth's continental crust.
