I am curious if the tree is diseased and this is something that I need to address soon.
I'm not sure of the type of tree but I think it is a sycamore. Please see the photos to help identify.

Flaking bark is common for Sycamores, some years more than others. Sycamores grow quickly and can live for hundreds of years.
They are susceptible to storm damage, and even though they grow quickly, can be easily damaged by winds. It may just be weakened yet still able to compartmentalize the problem and continue living. I am curious if the tree is diseased and this is something that I need to address soon. Duval County Florida tree health. Yet this answer seems to fall through when we are confronted with slow growing trees which equally undergo exfoliation. Frost cracks, which are also temperature-related, can cause the bark to split.
With all the rain we have had this year; some trees have grown especially fast. As the girth of the sycamore tree expands, the brittle bark tends to crack and come loose.
There is no cause for concern. Also, another friend said that, no matter what type they are, they're just going through a natural process of "shedding" the outer bark layers, and nothing is wrong at all.
If that's the case, I'd like to know that too. I apologize for the lack of quality of the pictures. He was able to get a wider perspective as well as a few close-ups of certain areas.

Kevinsky, although he didn't get a picture of the tops, he believes the trees looked healthy all the way up. From his vantage point, he saw no evidence of die-back or other damage, and only remarked that the higher sections were much smoother. Also, I had forgotten to add a picture of mine.
Upon further inspection, though, it looks different than the others, and is probably sick! Totally normal and healthy!
