In fact, one of the lessons of this revolution in particular is how the hierarchical and stratified structure of Dominican society was altered by these revolutionary ideals in which the poor, women, and those of African and Haitian descent took on leading roles. It is poor Haitians and Dominicans who are ultimately — just as people, mainly blacks in the U. Fifty years later, the Dominican revolution continues to be a forgotten chapter in the resistance against capitalism and imperialist hegemony. Out of the ashes that the Yanki invasion left behind, a dictatorial regime was installed and headed by Joaquin Balaguer — a close collaborator of the Trujillo dictatorship — who ruled the country with iron hand for 12 years.
However, this counter-revolutionary period has not ended. Political oppression continues to this day and multi-national corporations line their pockets at the expense of the Dominican people. Moreover, the racism that has led to the wholesale marginalization and disenfranchisement of Haitians within the Dominican Republic runs contrary to the revolutionary ideals and spirit of the revolution. We must not forget the Revolution, we must not forget to show support to the Haitian masses facing oppression, we must not forget that the void between working class and peasants of both Haiti and Santo Domingo has worked towards the benefit of imperialism, and we must not forget that revolution is still a necessity today.
