I am a full time fangirl, if you are one too, you will understand the pain of disrespectfulness to our fandoms. How come if the book Winter is less pages than the book Cress, how come it is going to take so long until its publication? Is research needed or is there some kind of delay, maybe it's going to be published around that time for the next christmas because of the ironic name of the book? I'm not sure but it would be interesting to know.
Moore The page number listed there is not accurate: On her blog, Marissa Meyer has stated that WINTER is the biggest book out of them all, and she won't reveal how big until closer to the publication date. Also, page number has nothing to do with how slow or fast something is published: See all questions about Winter…. Lists with This Book. Nov 05, Emily May rated it really liked it Shelves: Fitting in was not an option. After finally giving in and picking up Scarlet , even though I hated Cinder , I just haven't been able to get enough of this series.
And this longass final installment was a heart-pounding, fast-paced finale. You know, I actually checked and this is the longest YA book I have ever read at over pages, the second longest being Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at pages. I was a bit concerned seeing as I generally think any YA book over pages feels too long, but I needn't have worried. I flew through this monster.
I've come to the conclusion that I really like how Meyer balances retelling with the traditional story. She gets the amount of each just right, changing up enough to keep it surprising and exciting, but slotting in many parallels to the original stories that often catch me by surprise and make me smile. I also love how far the relationships have come. Lots of funny and touching dynamics, lots of great friendships to remind us that romance isn't everything.
In Winter , I loved the title character so much. In addition to the brave, level-headed Cinder, the fiery Scarlet, and the sweet, intelligent Cress, we now have Ms beautiful and crazy. Each character is very different, but important in her own way, and together they make a funny, lovable team.
The book wraps up very well, delivering a dramatic and bloody climax.
There are many close calls, lots of action, and lots of crazy. As I've said about the previous two books: And can we all just take a moment to talk about how great Thorne is? I compared him to Gilderoy Lockhart in my review of the last book and he is still my favourite character. He's just so hilarious and ridiculous Right after Suave and Daring. Now I just need to read Stars Above during the long wait for Heartless. View all 83 comments. Apr 13, Dana marked it as to-read. View all 50 comments. Just like with the previous books, I loved the world, the characters, the story, and the writing. This is one of my favorite series of all time, and I'm so so happy with this beautiful conclusion! Dec 06, Angela marked it as to-read Shelves: She screamed like a thousand birds were picking at her flesh. She screamed like the palace was burning down around her.
That would be no easy task. A towel seems inappropriate for the position. Thinking about her tended to give him an unwanted hitch in his lungs. Her whole body was wound up tight. She was ready to storm the palace herself—an army of one. It did not feel like home. It felt like a place that had been built to be paradise, but had become a prison. All green and witchy. Much better to act unperturbed. Much safer to act crazy, when in doubt. In a moment of weakness, he craned his head and kissed her on the shoulder, where the drop of blood had fallen before.
He laughed, like someone had stabbed him in the chest and he had no other choice but to find it amusing. She was prettier than a bouquet of roses and crazier than a headless chicken. How can I not know his real name? What kind of alpha mate am I? Wolf probably could have crushed her with his fingertips. Not intimidated enough, but a little. It was almost like the queen expected someone to start trouble.
Being tyrannized by Levana had a way of making allies of enemies. Is that really so much to ask? She's lived on Luna in the palace but grown up with her stepmother and seen how, when Levon uses her lunar powers, it's turned her into such a tyrant. Winter has decided never to use her lunar gift. But when a lunar chooses not to use their gift, it slowly starts to drive them crazy, so Winter is afflicted with bad hallucinations, and as the book goes on, her mental state is slowly deteriorating. Jan 03, Katerina rated it it was amazing Shelves: Her name was Katerina. She used to gaze at the sky and observe the faint light of the moon. One night, she watched a falling star and made a wish. She wished that she would belong. Little did she know that her heart's desire was about to be granted. For when the star landed on Earth, it took a woman's form. In some stories they call her the fairy god-mother. In this one, they call her Marissa Meyer. And she's coming home. Her words, her words would be a gift to mankind. She chose to narrate the classic tales everyone loved from a different angle, adding space and androids and plagues and monsters.
Adding diverse heroes and heroines , characters of different color and weight and height and backround. Adding strong friendships, sweet romances, vivid adventuress, loathsome villains and a handful of stardust. And she created The Lunar Chronicles. She read about Snow White, who was beautiful and kind, crazy and delusional, who hallucinated and sang eerie songs, who was in love with her best friend and guard.
She read about Cinder, who tried to be brave and make difficult desicions that would result in sacrifices and bloodbath in order to take her throne back. About Scarlet, fierce and bold and determined Scarlet, who felt that she didn't fit in until she found her home in the face of a predator, a killer. About Cress, who dreamed about happily ever afters and pretended she was a hero from a movie when she was afraid, and didn't realize how valuable she was. These four girls were different, but were bound together by a common goal and a friendship that didn't know planets and social status.
And I will be the first ruler in the history of Luna who will also fight for you. About Wolf, who was savage and murderous but also a soft cupcake who fought for his humanity. About Thorne, who was funny and cocky and didn't believe he was a hero until a strange girl turned his world upside down with her faith in him. About Jacin, who was intimidating and cold, eager to do anything for his princess. Four boys, four girls and one android. Katerina loved them all, for their strangeness and their flaws, their loyalty and their hearts.
Her own heart broke when they were seperated, when they were forced to do terrible things or went through terrible things. She shed tears of joy and tears of sadness. She laughed until her stomach hurt. She did find Winter a little long, but stars above! I'm going to miss them. She held the book against her heart and looked at the sky. A Rampion, whose passengers were a mechanic and an emperor, a farmer and a soldier, a hacker and a smuggler, a princess and a guard. They looked down and smiled at her. She was not alone. Winter is going to be such an interesting character I'm so excited! After Reading Cress So, without too many spoilers, I'm just going to leave this little exchange here: They don't like that. Do you know how I know? Because the walls of t Marissa Meyer in Interview: Because the walls of the palace have been bleeding for years and no one else can see it. If the blood was real, the servants would've cleaned it up by now, don't you think? I'm really sorry for using doge like I am in college what am I even doing.

Apr 13, Steph Sinclair marked it as to-read Shelves: I just love how Snow White will be a person of color. Totally wasn't expecting that. Is it Winter yet? View all 34 comments. Oct 07, William rated it it was ok. This review is definitely not representative of the majority opinion, and one I never expected to hold before reading this book. Don't get me wrong though. Maybe I was expecting too much, or perhaps I have changed as a person since reading the first three books, but this book fell flat on so many levels.
At a stunning pages, Winter is a book lover's dream book size, especially when the book is [insert positive adjective here]. When I found out how long the book was, I was so ready to enjoy and savor each page. Rather, I found myself lost, annoyed, and dissatisfied. The problem lied in that there was too much going on. The strength of this series lies in the characters vs. The strength in a fairy tale comes not from the predictability of the plot where good will always triumph, but from the characters you meet along the way. The plot, instead of giving the characters the space to grow, became the centerpiece of Winter.
This book was supposed to be about Princess Winter based off the title. But was it really though? Because I clearly did not see it. I loved the character of Princess Winter, but felt like no attention was given at all to her. Even worse, it felt like she was simply a means to advance the plot. I am a sucker for romance, but literally ALL the main characters were paired up by the end.
It is to the point where the romance felt too constructed and forced to be honest. Love the character, but because of the aforementioned problem of too many things going on, his character's journey felt so There was this huge buildup throughout the entire novel over Wolf Wolf, the character, fell victim to the plight of plot for plot's sake the worst. Death in books usually need to serve a purpose for me, but there was just so much senseless death in this book that honestly did not make any sense.
Rather than feeling remorse, sadness, regret, etc. I instead felt confusion and had the reaction of, "huh" "like why". And even worse, it is not even talked about or a major concern to Cinder or the other main characters Cinder, the main character of this entire series, did not feel like the Cinder I grew to love over the course of this series!! This book is SO lookist. This was my biggest contention with the author. Levana should be dethroned because she is The main characters attack her lack of beauty and scars as if they are her main flaw.
One of the main messages of the book was that everyone had inner beauty no matter what they looked like - whether they had "strange" wolf-like features or a But that clearly flew out the window when writing this book. View all 17 comments. This narrator nailed it! I was so happy with the way this book went and the way it ended. Well, one part made me sad. There were parts that I wanted to yell, throw things, hulk smash, off with heads and so forth and so on, but I digress. I don't want to give out any kind of spoilers since so many people are reading this book right now or are going to be reading.
So, this review is going to be filled with some excerpts from the book and pictures because that's what I want to do. I loved the dynamics between all of the characters. Each character in this book brings something to the table and have their own story and form of bad areseness!
Not one minute did this book get boring. Everything in the book was layered in a perfect way, but this is just my opinion. I had one part I wished could have been more revenge filling for me, but as most of those that read my reviews, know I'm into the hulk smash, wipe the floor with them kind of revenge.. Has she ever heard you talk? It's a complete mystery. My name is Selene Blackburn. I am the daughter of the late Queen Channary, niece to Princess Levana, and the rightful heir to Luna's throne. But these are nothing compared to the crime you committed thirteen years ago.
If there is anyone in this room who is guilty of royal treason, it is the woman sitting on that throne. My mother left when I was a kid and never looked back. I witnessed a man kill my grandmother and then rip out her throat with his teeth. I was kept in a cage for six weeks. I was forced to cut off my own finger. I'm pretty sure I'm falling in love with a guy who has been genetically modified and mentally programmed to be a predator. So all things considered, I'd say I have a fair amount of scattered pieces myself.
I will not torture you. Help me end Levana's rule and we will all have our freedom. If you swear to never control us as they have done, my pack will fight for your revolution. Others growled, but Winter thought it was a growl of agreement. In response, she lifted her nose to the cavern ceiling and howled. View all 53 comments. Honestly, I don't remember what finally convinced me to pick it up.
I was just glad I did. Now I'm not so sure. For a multitude of reasons. And for the second time this year though for very different reasons , this will be a two-part review--a nonspoilery review first, followed by a spoiler-tagged RANT. I can only talk about one here, but there are many more, and two of them are HUGE.
Cinder and Kai have been around since book 1. Cress has very real, very legitimate issues with Thorne and his incorrigible need to flirt with any and all present females, and Thorne is a life-long womanizer. But these obstacles never get directly addressed. We're just supposed to accept that Cress is "different" and Thorne really has changed , without any concrete evidence to support those claims. Call me cynical, but I'd learned that lesson by the time I was twenty. Winter and Jacin feel like guests in their own story. I'll grant you that the time spent on their coupleness was fantastic.
I'll even say that it was as fantastic as the stuff we saw with Scarlet and Wolf my personal favorite couple. In the end, I was convinced their love was real. I just didn't care. There was entirely too much happening in this book. I don't know if Meyer couldn't maintain the quality of writing we've become accustomed to, or if she was frazzled from trying to fit everything in, but WINTER was choked with clumsily handled side plots. Parts of the story evolution are so lazy, it's almost like Meyer expected the leftover adrenaline from all the BAD THINGS, the one area where she continued to excel unexpectedly dropping truly horrible obstacles on our MCs , to carry us right over the discrepancies.
And for a lot of people that probably worked. I almost DNF-ed this book. They will steal your free will and make you do really bad stuff. ALSO, death was constantly imminent. Someone s would get captured, execution would be inevitable, HA HA, just kidding! Over and over and OVER again. This isn't really a spoiler, but if you're one of those readers who wants to go into a book completely blind, I'd skip this part. Actually, if you're one of those types of readers, I'd avoid reviews entirely. Anyway, Levana is pure evil. We've known this for a looooooong time. She has to die.
The question is how to do it? How do we take down this master of bioelectricity manipulation? The possibilities are endless. And I'm furious all over again. You don't kick a rabid dog. You put it out of it's misery. And that's it for the first portion of of my review. This is the worst last book in a previously beloved series I have ever encountered.
I did not know it was possible to be this underwhelmed, this unhappily surprised, this ANGRY about a book from an author whose past work had been stellar. DO NOT click unless you've already read the book, or have no intentions of ever doing so. Yes, Cress was primarily responsible for all the spyware in Kai's palace, but no matter how great a hacker you are, you can't manifest cameras and listening devices in strategic locations. So how did they get there? I was convinced Torin had been brainwashed, but even without him being the culprit, someone else had to be.
I guess we'll never know. This is how it went down: Garan's unnecessary software updates are mentioned, making it more than obvious that something is hinky. Cinder unconscious for three days. Cinder never actually confirmed this speculation. And based on Iko's surprise at the announcement, it's clear Cinder didn't check it out off-page either.

Wolf's further genetic modifications. Wolf spent his early years as one of Levana's super soldiers in constant fear that he'd fail somehow and end up back on the operating table. Everything he did from the time he woke up from his initial mods was in pursuit of avoiding the lot of the majority of his soldier brethren. And when he woke up, I'll admit I was concerned. And his fear of this exact fate was palpable. But oh, look at that. This timeless fantasy series begins when Taran, a lowly pig keeper, has a run in with a sinister horned rider.

They are very fin and enjoyable to read,I highly recommend them! The Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull is perfect for this age group. A brother and sister go to visit their grandparents and discover that they are the caretakers of a nature preserve for magical creatures, both good and evil. They discover that someone is trying to loose the evil creatures and take over the world. Can they work together to keep the evil from overtaking the good? The Land of Stories series is great for this age and I believe struggling readers though the books are large will love them enough to read themselves if a parent reads the first 3 chapters to them.
I want to thank you for these posts. My 4th grade son is a voracious reader, and your list has helped me so much to keep up with his reading habits. May I link to your page from my blog, http: The plots are riveting, and the addition of time travel is appealing to this grade level.
Thanks for this great list! My 4th grade son has learned so much about mythology Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse and just loved all those books. Check out the database at this website. It is the collection of books curated by the AFrican American girl in search of 1, books about black girls. You can check the books based on reading level, and more. My third grade loves the Frog Princess series.
We read together every night and I enjoy them as much as she does. My 10 year old son loves the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan. He loved them more than the Percy Jackson and he liked that series. There are also 2 other series by the same author that wrote Warriors. One is called Seekers, the other is Survivors. My son loved all of them, but Seekers was his favorite. Thanks for all the great suggestions!! I was looking for someone else who would suggest this series. One of our favorites!
I suggest the Merits of Mischief series by T. My son who does not like reading, could not put these down. He read these all in grade 6. Thanks for the great list. I would include the Alex rider series, the witch baby series very funny and how to train your dragon series too. Fablehaven series 5 book series. Author of the Spirit Animal Series you listed.
I read them first and am sharing them with my kids now! What I love is that at the end of the books there are discussion questions you can ask your kids. The Five Kingdom Series 4 books so far one yet to come. Also by Brandon Mull. Dare I say even better than Fablehaven??!!! Dunno but your kids will love them. I really enjoyed the Beyonders series by Brandon Mull as well. There was one character that freaked me out a little. Ferrin was his name. Totally brilliant and cool concept for a character! But you should find him and read about his particular abilities and judge if you are ok with letting your kid read it.
They are even better than the first series of books. It ties in the Roman personas of the Greek Gods and introduces you to another camp of Roman demigods. Of corse Percy and Annabeth are still major players. About the Egyptian Gods told by a brother and sister who are always making snarky remarks while the other is speaking. The storyline is amazing. The Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley is a hilariously entertaining series! When my mother bought me the Charlie Bone series, she also got Artemis Fowl. I love them both! Artemis is a brilliant, rich criminal mastermind, but he may be in over his head when he kidnaps Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit.
These fairies are armed and dangerous. Anything by Stuart Gibbs!
I have read many of the ones you listed Autumn and loved them as well. Thanks for this list! These are all wonderful series! One other I think you should add is the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. Next to Harry Potter they are mine and my kids favorites! Savvy, Scumble and Switch by Ingrid Law are some of our favorites. The main character in the first book is Mibs Beaumont, is about to turn 13, and with a grandpa who can move mountains, and older brothers who can create storms and spark electricity, she is anxiously awaiting her birthday.
The second and third novels are about different members of their extended families. Both my son and daughter enjoyed this series, and we all hope there will be more to come. My son loves reading and is starting the 2nd grade. We are already running out of ideas for books to read that are not really scary but are at his reading and interest level. We have read Narnia over the summer so this is a great list of what we can read next!!! My daughter started reading the Wings of Fire series by Tui T.
Sutherland in 4th grade and it is her very favorite set of books! The very best book is Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins!
My 3rd grader through high schoolers love them. Gregor the Overlander is brilliantly written by Suzanne Collins! Perfect for any age! I enjoyed them as much as my 4th grader and high schooler! It has action from the first page. The sequel comes out May 30, The Redwsll series by Brian Jacques. My grandsons have enjoyed the Little House books so far.
