The necessary translation work — which is done mainly by the students on the linguistic level — is thus an elementary part of the project work, whereby processes of communication slow down, take detours, and often alter understanding. But these very aspects can be understood as a central challenge for education when the subject of globalization is reflected, namely, developing practices that enable collaborative action in and by means of difference.

Seminar paper from the year in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Middle- and South America, grade: When I visited Venezuela as second travel destination after Ecuador in Latin America last year, I remember very well passing by a huge mural painted on an oil refinery, showing: Petroleum has changed the trajectory of all countries with the fortune or the curse, depending on the point of view of being located on top of its enormous basins more significantly than social scientists could have imagined.
While geographically speaking the Middle East has received most academic attention, and also singular African countries have been examined thoroughly, this paper focuses on the case of Latin America, more specifically on its two OPEC members Ecuador and Venezuela. Furthermore, in the context of this course, I became inspired to explore the development and current status of the governmental authorities in both countries, based on the theoretical concept of good governance.
Consequently, I will investigate in the link between national wealth in and subsequent exploitation of oil and gas, and its interaction with governance in the respective countries. I will introduce the so-called resource curse phenomenon in this context, as successful management of this somewhat messy socio-economic problem is doubtlessly an important indicator of good governance.
Often overlooked in this discussion is the distinguishing feature that governance type plays in the resource curse, as most of the hydrocarbon-rich countries have no democratic political system Ross While Ecuador and Venezuela as defective democracies do not directly fall into this category, I will argue that they nonetheless display all major features of the resource curse, so that development, defined in its broadest sense, suffers. The seemingly paradoxical outcome of resource-abundance and poor development needs further governance-focused investigation.
I will hence introduce the concept of good governance, followed by an evaluation of Ecuador and Venezuela using objective measurement tools for good governance. In a final point I will address the question of causality and the related problems, due to the complex interaction of resource wealth and governance performance. Seminar paper from the year in the subject Sociology - Gender Studies, grade: Gender and Organization, language: Ever since women have entered the professional world, constructions and notions of gender and gender equality have become relevant - not only do they reflect changes and developments in society but also have had a deep impact on and the change of organizations.
It seems that gender equality has presented a challenge for all kinds of organizations - but in not other organization, gender has been as central and as it seems as difficult to handle as in the military. It is an organization where hegemonial masculinity and related concepts such as power, violence and hierarchy have been produced, reproduced and become institutionalized as a dominant structuring feature. This change is the result of a long-lasting and difficult process which was brought about by several developments; most of all, it reflects overall cultural and societal changes and pressures.
Laws and quotas concerning and securing gender equality have been enacted and instances such as equal opportunity commissioners have been established in the military in several countries. But does this really mean that gender equality in the military is really completely achieved and has become an institution? In how far has gender equality been institutionalized? These questions lead to the central question of this paper: For which reasons is gender equality established? Which factors influence or impede the process of institutionalization?
How is it organized, how is it represented, and in how far is it really implemented, internalized and realized? And in the end: Musik-Mobile Hase und Vogel: H 0,24 B 0. International Labour Law, language: The phenomenon of globalisation has triggered various trends and changes world-wide, affecting almost every part of life. One of the most heavily influenced realms has been labour and its legal framework. Globalisation has transformed the nature of work as well as the organisation and way in which work is performed nowadays.
Due to the technical progress, Multinational Corporations have been equipped with an immense ability to relocate their business wherever and whenever they want to any part of the world, powerful enough to dictate their demands to national governments. Additionally, the International Labour Organisation, historically the main standard-setting institution, has experienced enormous problems in the implementation process and has therefore undergone a paradigm shift.
This essay tries to analyse the challenges of globalisation posed to international labour standards, especially experienced by the ILO. It then continues by examining the various private measures, which have been used so far, covering both public and private measures, and reaching from e. It is argued that public and private implementation have become increasingly interdependent, and that developing and fostering this interdependency will be crucial for the prospective success and effectiveness of international labour standards in an ongoing globalising world.
Weicher Greifling mit Holzring. Essay from the year in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, printed single-sided, grade: Good, The University of Surrey, language: Interpersonal Communication , abstract: Men and women do not only look different, they literally are different from scratch Gates: But does this difference also apply to language and talk? However, this has been contradicted by the University of Texas - there is no gender that is more talkative.
Moreover, according to the studies, women speak on average 16, words and men 15, words a day Mehl et al.: According to the amount of research that has been conducted in this field there are major differences between male and female language. Tabloid newspapers and talk shows tend to suggest that women swear less than men or that women are the more gossipy gender. These assumptions are internalised by the vast majority of the population, but are they really true Coates: Or is all that nonsense? This again shows that male and female language varies. The United States in the s, 28 entries in the bibliography, language: It might perhaps be correct to say that never in history has any historical event assembled such great importance in all of its aspects, and been studied in such depth. I believe that is fully understandable, because never before had humankind been so close to the brink of nuclear holocaust. This short statement by Oleg Troyanovsky reveals that the Cuban missile crisis is indeed one of the most studied subjects in U.
Ever since the thirteen days in October there has been a lively discussion about the origins and the management of the crisis. Despite an enormous range of opinions, and an incredible output of books and articles by participants and scholars of the crisis, most of the approaches were limited to studying the events from an American perspective. However, during the last decade the discussion has continued due to the declassification of secret American documents. In fact it gained new speed after they became available for scholars to review.
One issue that has been heavily disputed since is the reason for the Soviet missile deployment to Cuba. Even after more than 35 years, it is unclear why Nikita Khrushchev ordered nuclear missiles to be sent to Cuba. Even President John F. Kennedy and his advisers in the Executive Committee ExComm could not agree on the reason for the missile deployment. The official Soviet explanation states that the missiles were sent to defend Fidel Castro s revolution and to deter American aggression in Cuba. However, this theory has been vigorously dismissed as facesaving propaganda for the test-of-will theory which states that the Soviets wanted to probe America s resolve in Cold War politics.
I will show in this paper that Khruschev did not send the missiles to Cuba because he wanted to directly challenge Kennedy, but rather two reasons were responsible for stationing strategic missiles 90 miles off the U. After reconsidering the defense-of-Cuba theme it becomes apparent that the Soviets and the Cubans believed that the deployment of troops and finally nuclear missiles was necessary to save Cuba. This threat perception was not known to the United States. Introduction Since the fall of the Barre regime in , Somalia has been the most profound and outstanding example of state failure not only in Africa but the entire world.
It is a system of mutually reinforcing factors consisting of clan violence and a corresponding history of real or imagined marginalisation, the establishment of war economics, various jihads and last but not least the interference of a multitude of external actors. The question of this bachelor thesis is: What role did external actors take in the process of state failure in Somalia? My hypothesis is, that the Somali state collapse cannot be seen as a purely internal phenomenon but rather as a layered systemic process that has been influenced by external actors on a massive scale.
The main purpose of this bachelor thesis is to outline the role of external actors in the Somali state collapse. Albeit the focus of this work is clearly the external dimension of this conflict, we shall not neglect the internal actors and factions in Somalia. Especially after the Ethiopian invasion of and the begin of the international anti-pirate mission at the Horn of Africa a whole pile of scientific literature has been written on external actors and their strategic motivations in Somalia.
But usually these publications only focus on the external actors and their motivations without appropriately addressing internal dynamics. In order to bridge the gap of understanding between the layers of internal and external conflict dimensions, this work tries to create a holistic and systemic big picture view of the Somali state collapse by outlining historical, sociological, internal and external factors alike. To achieve this goal, this work has been divided into three main parts. The first part will briefly describe the Somali history.
I will at first outline the historic developments before to give an impression of the long-term development of the country.
Subsequently the clan structure and its relevance will be addressed to answer the question why such a high internal conflict potential could arise in Somalia despite far reaching ethnic, cultural, religious and lingual homogeneity. Afterwards the historic events in the state-failure period from will be described. The main sources for this. Fotoecken, Fototapes und Fotoleim. Project Report from the year in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: B, Santa Clara University, language: Chipotle Mexican Grill, hereafter referred to as Chipotle, is a fast-casual restaurant that specializes in a limited menu mainly consisting of burritos, tacos and burrito bowls. Chipotle is known for its ability to offer products made from sustainable, organic ingredients, while remaining price competitive with other fast food chains.
Chipotle stands apart from others in a highly concentrated industry because it does business differently in terms of its food, restaurants and advertising. While most fast food chains rely on advertisements that promote menu gimmicks, such as limited-time price reductions, new items, value menu offerings and more, Chipotle focuses on showcasing its quality ingredients. It also generates excitement for its food through a number promotional events and word of mouth. Strategic Move Even though the restaurant and bar industry is saturated, there are not many competitors that offer organic ingredients within the industry.
To take advantage of the recent surge of consumers who demand healthier, organic food, Chipotle has decided to enter into the fast-casual Asian restaurant market with a new chain named ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen, hereafter referred to as ShopHouse. Staying true to its position as a focused differentiator, Chipotle will operate ShopHouse under the same philosophy that has made it so successful, offering sustainable gourmet ingredients at reasonable prices.

The quiescent current with 1 A of output current and an input-output differential of 5 V is therefore only 30 mA. Distinction, University of Westminster, course: International Humanitarian Law, language: The first Chapter, analysed also important aspects concerning the on-going non-international Libyan conflict. This study takes into account the important changes concerning the way to conduct armed conflicts that has been made over the last century.
One of the most important changes concerns the types of armed conflicts. In the following pages of this study, since the end of the Second World War, an important raise in the numbers of non-international armed conflicts was registered around the world. Despite this, most of the treaties, conventions and regulations concerned the conduct of international armed conflict, even if these armed conflicts were very uncommon.
Taking into account this important change, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia hereinafter ICTY in a Tadic case suggested that the law of armed conflict should be applied more uniformly. According to the Court orientation, the equal application of the law of armed conflicts is justified by the exponential growing frequency and cruelty of internal conflicts which make irrelevant the distinction between types of armed conflicts.
The same conclusion has been reached by the International Committee of the Red Cross hereinafter ICRC through its study on the international customary status of international humanitarian law, by which has been proved that there are tangibles reasons in order to support the abandon of the legal distinction between the international and non-international armed conflicts. As it will be demonstrated in the first chapter of this study, the progress made by the international community in this sense has been considerable. Indeed, it can be said that, nowadays, there is an important body of provisions concerning the law of international armed conflicts which applied also to a non-international armed conflicts.
However, some distinct areas regulated by the law of armed conflicts, such as combatant status and prisoners of war rights, remain exclusive to international armed conflicts. The second chapter of this study, therefore, will explore the meaning of combatant status and the reasons of its denial to non-State participants during an non-international armed conflict. Consequently, it will be discussed the status of non-State participants when no longer engaged in non-international armed conflict and analysed the legality of the Osama Bin Laden killing in accordance with the law of armed conflicts.

Our daily lives develop an increasingly international orientation. Globalization produced a demand for intercultural communication and awareness for both the tourism industry and many different commercial sectors. The travel and tourism industry has experienced a growing internationalization during the past decades. Especially here people are exposed to cultural different societies.
In the tourism industry it is substantial to know cultures in its various forms and dimensions since it has a significant impact on tourism planning and development, management and marketing. Companies in the tourism industry have to understand the influence of national cultures on their consumers to be able to compete for market share successfully.
Intercultural communication helps tourists to keep the quality of the interaction with different nationalities high and therefore contribute to their holiday experiences and perceptions of the visited destination. Many intercultural problems within the tourism industry arose during the past years and are becoming more and more threatening for both the host destinations and the tourist himself.
This paper describes, analyzes and also discusses some of those problems in the tourism industry and try to find a possible solution for them in order to eventually smoothing the way from a global village to a global community. The influence of IQ on success in various aspects of life has long been recognized and a theory of Multiple Intelligences MI has been offered as a better predictor of success than a uni-facet IQ theory. Much recently, work on identifying components of intelligence has lead scholars to the introduction of a new concept of intelligence, that is, Emotional Intelligence EI , with a variety of components and subcomponents attached to it.
The fact is that the relationship between intelligence types and different academic skills and life achievements has attracted the attention of a great number of scholars in almost any discipline. This research-driven book is still a new addition to the growing list of publications intended to reveal the relationship between intelleigence and academic writing ability in an EFL context.
The book is is expected to be of use for language practitioners as well as for researchers in the fields of intelligence and applied linguistics. Near East, Near Orient, grade: The victory of the conservative AKP Justice and Development Party in November, elections has brought the issue of turban1 back on the agenda, so much so that the tension between Islamists and Kemalists has again increased.
This controversial debate has divided the Turkish society into different camps. Secularists claim that the turban is a political symbol and has nothing to do with basic individual rights.
Islamists, on the other hand, treat it mainly as an issue of religious freedom. The basic goal of this paper is to answer the question of whether deliberative democracy can contribute to creating a healthy dialogue between Islamists and Kemalists in Turkey. Special emphasis has been given to deliberative concepts such as social learning and mutual understanding, because they may enhance the possibility that an adequate atmosphere of dialogue can be created. First, the theoretical framework will be discussed: After handling the general considerations of deliberative democracy, a more specific model of John Dryzek will be dealt with which analyses the decision making and social learning levels of deliberation separately.
Benhabib focuses on the less restricted, informal phases of deliberation in her book. By focusing on Dryzek and Benhabib, this paper aims to establish an analytical framework that shows deliberation as an opinion formation process oriented to learning alongside the decision making process. The third chapter focuses on the headscarf debate in Turkey by considering its historical roots and legal framework. In the fourth chapter, a survey conducted in by the Konda Research Institute regarding the perceptions and practices of people in Turkey regarding religion, the headscarf and secularism will be presented.
It will be argued that the findings of these two studies will bolster the hopes for establishing a more healthy democratic culture in Turkey. Essay from the year in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Materially, the EU has been forced to reshape its relations with the countries of South-Eastern Europe, but it has also adapted its post-Cold War foreign policy tools more generally. In terms of overall political strategies, the adoption of new security doctrines such as the Petersberg tasks and the implementation of peace-building initiatives for the Western Balkans such as the Stability Pact for South-Eastern Europe or the joint police mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina have been widely acknowledged as both internal and external successes for the EU.
Ultimately, the EU has learnt a lot from its Balkan entanglements. Some lessons which have not yet been translated into policy changes will be discussed as well. Based on these insights, I will conclude that the EU has generally been successful in turning its past failure into a future potential, although a number of problems remain. The final part discusses the question if financial innovations have been beneficial for borrowers and lenders? Thatcherism continues to be one of the most contentious approaches in British politics today, just as its figurehead continues to be one of the most divisive figures in British political history.
The philosophy that Thatcher and her closest allies embodied and brought to life between and is being exhumed for its values of a smaller state and a stronger, more independent economy following a ruinous financial crisis and critical public examination of national finances. The Keynesian renaissance that took hold at the height of the financial crisis has lost grip and ground to a resurgence in what is essentially a Thatcherite consensus. This dissertation will first explore the key philosophical points of Thatcherism, exemplified during her time in office as Prime Minister.
Secondly, it will examine the legacy of Thatcher and how Thatcherism has been an undeniable influence on politics since Finally, it will examine whether a return to stronger Thatcherite influences on public policy are desirable in light of an on-going economic crisis of British public finances. It is the goal of this dissertation to examine and explore the newfound relevance of Thatcherism as not only a political philosophy, but also as a methodology with which to approach policy making in Britain.
Calls for a fundamental rethink in the way that the British economy and the government as a whole is operated are becoming more prominent in many circles and it is likely that looking to the lessons of the past is just as, if not more, prudent than trying to reinvent the wheel of public policy. Ethnicity, Nationalism, Racism - the problem and power of identities, language: This essay addresses the question whether Hindu nationalism is a threat to democracy or not and if so in what sense it has threatened democracy.
The question is why this topic is so relevant.
Every now and then we hear about violent riots in India, read it in the papers or watch it in the TV news. Many times these riots are caused by different religious groups: A reason for this is the rise of a Hindu right. The phenomenon of Hindu nationalism has already been discussed in research for some time, but only in the past few years, a discussion outside India has begun whether or not it might be a threat to the biggest democracy in the world.
The public in the Western hemisphere is probably completely ignorant about this topic, especially as Islamism has threatened the Europeans and Americans a lot more. Another aspect is that a lot can be learnt about how religious nationalism can threaten democracy. So, why is Hindu nationalism such an interesting subject now? Additionally, the idea of a Hindu community is a perfect example of the European idea of nationalism brought to a former colony.
This essay is structured in the following way: It then proceeds by describing the Indian democracy based on its Constitution and the Congress System, both playing an important role in the rise of Hindu nationalism. The essay then refers to Hindu nationalism itself, portraying its historical development in the 20th century, illustrating the ideological basis with the concepts of Savarkar and Golwalkar on which it is based and the actors of Hindu nationalism on the level of the state.
This is followed by an analysis of the influence of Hindu nationalism on the Indian democracy. The paper finishes with a conclusion.
