Those of us who knew him I think would agree that there aren't many people in this world so absolutely devoted to a subject, or having the intensity which Phil had, to pursue anything or anyone who could enhance his already vast knowledge of everything Anza.
His constant and never ending pursuit of the subject was motivated by the desire to help establish recognition and a fair place for Anza in American History, and then spread the word to the four corners of the nation. This explains both his total dedication to the acquisition of that knowledge and the generosity with which he so willingly shared it with all of us.
It is an understatement to say that I have lost a good friend and we have all lost a true apostle of Juan Bautista de Anza. May he rest in peace!
Translated and edited by Phil Valdez Jr. Translations of these fifteen cartas have been divided into five sections where readers can get a glimpse of the struggles and needs of the settlers hereto unknown such as: With Russians and British vying for ownership of what was once considered an island, the Spanish under Viceroy Antonio Bucareli y Ursua decided to populate California and thus the second of the two de Anza expeditions.
He died after having a heart attack in front of his home in Brooklyn while waiting for a ride to dialysis treatment, said Marta Garcia, who worked alongside him as leaders of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. His institute was known for fastidious research and for a weekly newsletter in which he directed scathing criticism at those he felt were falling short on their commitment to Latinos.
He peppered city leaders with detailed reports on poverty rates, education figures and Latino participation in civil service jobs that he used to prove disparities. And he hounded elected officials and even Hispanic community leaders whom he felt had sold out to corporate interests. He spared no one. They persuaded PBS to make changes to the film so that Latinos were represented. Two years later, Mr. Dobbs eventually left the network. His family moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, when he was an infant. As a boy he led a fight at his public school to allow its mostly Puerto Rican student body to take the entrance exam for the selective Brooklyn Technical High School.
He was the only one admitted. He took all the coursework for a Ph. He was quite honest, and he always spoke truth to power. It is thus the primary order of military merit of the Republic of the Philippines. This not only flies in the face of basic evolutionary theory, it does lend itself to the theory of intelligent design. In addition, the DNA record find that, even though species show diversity from each other, they themselves do not grow more diverse with time, as evolution would theorize. A species, genetically, stays about the same, and always has.
The only changes appear to be adaptations from breeding and the environment. The secular scientific website Phys. It is textbook biology, for example, that species with large, far-flung populations—think ants, rats, humans—will become more genetically diverse over time. But is that true? That reaction is understandable: How does one explain the fact that 90 percent of animal life, genetically speaking, is roughly the same age? Was there some catastrophic event , years ago that nearly wiped the slate clean?
Sounds like the flood of Noah detailed in the Bible. Indeed, some geologists have found evidence of a massive global water event around that time. But that event aside, the proof that DNA disproves a basic tenet of evolution is groundbreaking. Researchers are announcing they have made a game-changing discovery in evolutionary biology and it could bring science one step closer to biblical truth. According to the researchers, an American and a Swiss scientist, their study of DNA suggests that , animals first appeared at roughly the same time — not gradually over millions of years.
Likely realizing how that damages the evolutionary model, one of the scientists publicly stated they were hesitant to release their findings. Nathaniel Jeanson, a research biologist for Answers in Genesis. The same study, he says, also found there is no cross-over species. This video by Answers in Genesis reviews how many of the basic pillars of evolution do not adhere to scientific principles.
The study may not be the deathblow to the evolutionary theory entirely, but it certainly destroys many of its basic tenets. But the story pointed out that the theory of a mass extinction from an asteroid strike is While most Japanese know their blood type, many foreigners do not and Japanese are frequently surprised to hear this. FamilySearch International is the largest genealogy organization in the world. Millions of people use FamilySearch records, resources, and services to learn more about their family history. To help in this great pursuit, FamilySearch and its predecessors have been actively gathering, preserving, and sharing genealogical records worldwide for over years.
Patrons may access FamilySearch services and resources free online at FamilySearch. Today people search for their ancestors in a variety of ways, including online, through documentation and records and via other forms of research. Tracing one's ancestry can be a way to uncover unknown family members for adopted people, reunite family members who have been separated, and find information to build a family tree.
Who was the first human to decide to search his or her genealogy? Although genealogical records have been discovered dating as far back as the 6th century BC, the answer to this question isn't fully known. Family records and stories were traditionally kept by early humans as a method of handing down history from one generation to another. Some of these traditional stories were written, but most were oral.
When many people search for their ancestors, church records are the first resource they consult. Sometimes it is difficult to know where to start, however. Those tracing their ancestry may not know their family's religion. Records such as family Bibles, if available, can often help provide a good beginning to a family history search. Today, the Internet is a treasure trove of all sorts of family history records, including church records.
This article, "Genealogy Workbook: Church Records," from Family Tree Magazine online describes the types of church records that are possible to find when searching for ancestors and how to access them. It also tells the reader how to interpret some of the more baffling documentation, such as baptismal records. Luckily for those searching for their ancestors, so many more records and documentation have been written down since the early days of oral storytelling. As people search for their ancestors, these types of records are usually more authentic and reliable than the early oral histories of our ancestors.
Types of records and documentation that people search for when conducting genealogy research include but are not limited to: Marriage and divorce records Birth and death records Military service records Immigration records Religious records Court documents Census information Records related to land sales Records related to employment Social security and tax information.
There are many valuable resources online that can help you access records such as those listed above: Historic American Newspapers, lists copies of newspapers from all states during a specified time range. These can be extremely helpful when beginning a search for ancestors' birth notices, obituaries, and articles about their lives. Census information is included. It helps researchers conduct a people search for ancestors who might have served in one of America's wars.
As it is run by Ancestry. Morse of San Francisco has set up this useful website to help people search for ancestors who have immigrated into different ports within the United States during a given range of years. Some of the searches are free while others are subscription-based. It includes survey plats and field notes. Access Genealogy - This free genealogy resource offers ancestry information from all 50 states. Some of the records listed here include cemetery records, vital records and Native American documentation. It is a well-known fact that oral histories in families can be altered or told incorrectly over time.
Therefore, it is vitally important to find reliable, written resources that a researcher can trust in an ancestry quest. Generally, ancestry resources that are hosted on government websites are reliable. Examples are any of the USA. Those conducting family research must remember that two types of genealogical sources exist: Primary sources are those that originate a record and usually have witnesses. Such sources include church and burial records. Secondary sources are sources that are written about something that has already occurred. Newspaper accounts of events that took place years ago could be examples of secondary sources.
When beginning a people search for family history, genealogists of all types amateur and professional must make sure to get certain basic information absolutely correct. There can be no question about this identifying information that must be discovered, researched, and double-checked for accuracy, including: Many family history researchers will find instances of multiple people with the same name. Records can help genealogists distinguish between people with similar or identical names. If a person used a nickname that is included in records, that can be one clue.
Names of places can also change over time and knowing this can assist researchers in determining which person is the one for which they are searching. Finally, spelling changes in names can also occur from one generation to the next. Nailing down these differences can help a genealogist to have the most accurate records possible. In recent years, genealogists have benefited from the rise in genetic testing. DNA analysis may be used today to trace a person's heritage.
This type of research can also uncover the part of the world from which one's ancestors originate and thus direct genealogists to obtain more accurate family history records. Besides helping people search for their ancestry, genetic testing is also useful in discovering and diagnosing diseases or screen for conditions that may be passed on to children, as this web page from the National Human Genome Research Institute discusses.
Once a person has obtained DNA information from genetic testing, it can be uploaded to Internet sites such as GEDMatch to find ancestors and even living family members, both distant and close. Those who have decided to begin a family history search of their own and trace their ancestry have many research tools available. Groups of amateur and professional genealogists often meet to compare notes and methods, motivating each other to continue their ancestry quests.
As genealogy becomes a more popular pastime, more tools become available both off-line and online. The following links will help people search for genealogical information on the Internet: What is Genealogical Research? The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. You can also read her blog, familylocket. These questions help writers get a better feel for the topic they need to cover. The same goes for creating a genealogy source. In her RootsTech presentation, Elder explained the five questions genealogists should ask themselves before writing a source citation.
Who created the source? What is the source? When is the source? Where is the source? Where within the source? To explain the five questions, Elder displayed a picture of a land record for Arthur Dillard on the screen and detailed the process she uses to write source citations. This land record comes from MyFlorida. The next step is to discover who created the source. Elder noted that this can be one of the most difficult steps because it requires some sleuthing on the part of the researcher. Next, look for when the source was created or documented.
In this example from Elder, she said it was fairly straightforward. Remember, this is an art, not a science. Ready to get started writing your own source citations? Next to it are statues of a Jumano native and a Jumano girl. The unveiling of these statues on May 20, is a historical moment for San Angelo, because it honors Sor Maria, whose appearances before the Jumano Indians are considered the beginning of Christianity in this part of the world. The story of the Lady in Blue starts in Agreda, which I had the opportunity to visit nine years ago.
Agreda is a small municipality in the province of Soria which was once a part of the kingdom of Castille in Spain. During the middle ages Agreda was an important center of the arts and handicrafts where Christians, Jews and Arabs lived in peace. For four centuries the municipality has been an important site because of the Monastery of the Conception and its founder. After she donned the habit of the Franciscan Order she was known as Sor Maria de Jesus, and in she became the abbess of the monastery. In one of the rooms of the monastery lies the miraculously incorrupt body of Sor Maria de Jesus.
She was born on April 2, and died on May 24, On display in another section of the convent are copies of some books she wrote during her lifetime. As a prolific writer and a visionary of her times she has fourteen books to her credit. Among them is the famous "Mistica Ciudad de Dios: Vida de la Virgin Maria" consisting of six volumes. Her unpublished book, "Tratado del Redondez de la Tierra," is controversial because it is about how the earth looks from space which was not accepted during the 17th century.
It is interesting to note that in Spain the Mistica Ciudad de Dios is included in university programs of the Spanish language for its contribution to Baroque literature. Also displayed are some letters between Sor Maria and King Philip IV of Spain, as well as some gifts she received from the king as a lifelong friend. For more than twenty-two years she was a confidant of the king, and there are over letters between them that document the spiritual, or sometimes political advices, that Sor Maria gave the king. With all her responsibilities as abbess of the monastery, her time and effort writing the books, and her services to the king, one wonders how she could be seen innumerable times preaching to the Jumano Indians without leaving the convent.
But God has bestowed upon her the supernatural power of bi-location, a mystical phenomenon, for good reasons. Bishop Don Diego de Yepes St. She then engaged herself in contemplative praying and it was during these periods of praying in ecstasy that she experienced being in another land and meeting people she dreamed of visiting and evangelizing.
It was her dream as a child and her missionary zeal to travel to the New World, known today as Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. During her many bi-locations to West Texas she encountered Jumano Native Indians to whom she preached and who were later converted to Christianity. And while the nuns in the monastery testified that Sor Maria never left Agreda, the Jumanos could describe her in detail and referred to her as the Lady in Blue because of the blue cape she wore all the time.
According to the Jumanos, as a sign of her final appearance, the Lady in Blue left a meadow of beautiful blue flowers. It is now the state flower of Texas — the bluebonnet. Posted by Jaime B. Circulated by Roberto R. M M Recalling the Walkouts of August 15, Updated: In the spring of , major demonstrations against the Vietnam War, poverty and racial discrimination rocked major U. Weeks later, that wave hit San Antonio hard, as students at several schools, particularly Lanier and Edgewood high schools, rose against what they described as systemic racial prejudice. Lanier students, chafing at a curriculum that pushed them toward manual labor and away from college, endured threats and abuse to win major changes that April.
Community and political leaders helped avoid a planned walkout there, but in May, about Edgewood students left the campus to protest broken-down facilities and inadequate funding. They, too, won changes. Herrera joined others on May 16 in waiting for the 10 a. Nobody is walking out of my class. But they did, assembling outside the cafeteria, grabbing picket signs left there by organizers and marching to the Edgewood Independent School District main office, blocks away, Herrera said.
They were joined by a few Escobar Junior High School students, he said. The school began offering college preparatory courses and students were no longer punished for speaking Spanish. The building was refurbished. Garza, who was in the school band, recalled going to a music store with a new band director to buy uniforms and instruments. Boys were taught auto mechanics, carpentry or printing. Girls learned how to cook, sew and type. They would not let me go to the restroom, they would not let me sit down. Garcia got a letter informing him he was expelled, and it enraged other students.
Students put together a list of demands and engaged elected officials. Students drew news coverage with a series of meetings at a community center. About 30 attended the first one, the Express-News reported. Two days later, it was , including parents, civic and religious leaders and activists. Lanier would get college preparatory courses.
Students could speak Spanish. Garcia was allowed back. He went on to earn a government degree at The University of Texas at Austin and two master's degrees and a doctorate in sociology at Yale. Lozano studied economics at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in Edgewood High School closed in But the protest had a wider impact, leading to the creation of the Edgewood District Concerned Parents Association, whose class action lawsuit was the first of several to challenge Texas education funding policy through the decades.
Funding equity is still before the courts. But bilingual education is available throughout Texas. And all public school districts consider it a central goal to prepare any student for college who wants to attend. Edgar Lozano , 64, reflects on the turbulent year last June at his business, Atlas Pallet.
Lozano, a junior at Lanier High School that year, chaired a student steering committee that planned a walkout but avoided it when their demands for curriculum changes were met. Manuel Garza, 64, was a graduate of Edgewood High School and participated in the student actions in San Antonio during the spring of , joining a walkout on May 16 to protest dirty school buildings, poor funding and inadequate resources. Some changes that resulted were immediate — a member of the band, Garza remembers being taken to a local music store with his new band director and asked to pick out new instruments and uniforms.
As a student at St. Mary's University in , Perez participated in the student actions in San Antonio during spring of that year as a member of the Mexican-American Youth Organization. It was the most dramatic of several local efforts that spring to change public expectations for Mexican-American students — and improve the curriculum, resources and facilities that went along with those expectations. Plans for a similar walkout at Lanier High School were shelved weeks earlier when a series of community meetings brought concessions.
Louis Martinez was one of the Edgewood high school activists of who joined the walkout protest that brought to light educational inequities of that period. Richard Herrera shows his poll tax card used for student government elections at Edgewood High School in Former Edgewood High School students who were involved in the walkouts stand in front of what is now Edgewood Academy. Books are a necessary limb in the body politic of community activism. Books are the ascendancy to a participatory democracy because an electorate who can read, who can think, and who can participate in civic affairs, is an electorate with a bright future. Both schools relegated students to a de-facto caste system of lower-class employment after graduation. Before community activism took place, raggedy textbooks were commonplace at Lanier High when I was a student. Books with missing pages were ubiquitous.
Nearby, the Prospect Hill Library on W. Even student assemblies were dismal and shortsighted. One day, I remember sitting during a junior assembly being told we might not get our senior rings in time for our ring-ceremony. The company spokesman blamed production delays.
Long story short — we got our rings as promised. The younger generation was demanding social change. West Side students wanted change immediately, not next year or next decade. And many took action. Former state senator Joe Bernal, a Lanier alumnus, in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News, remembers students coming to see him. A week later students packed the Guadalupe Community Center on El Paso Street, including parents, civic and religious leaders — and activists.
In , the U. Ideas garnered from books helped students to organize school walkouts and demand equity in school funding, better learning conditions and a college preparatory curriculum for inner city schools. A little knowledge did help MAYO activists and community leaders defeat ignorance, for a little while. Latino Americans, the largest and the fastest growing ethnic minority in the United States, are half as likely to hold a college degree as non-Hispanic white adults, an education gap that has been widening since , according to a June report.
Fewer than a quarter, or By comparison, more than 30 percent of black American adults had a college degree, and nearly half, or In some states, the college attainment gap is much larger. In California, for example, Latinos make up 36 percent of the adult population, but only 18 percent of Latino Californians hold a college degree. By contrast, 53 percent of white adults in California have a college degree.
A similar college attainment gap exists in Colorado. Although more Latinos have been attending and graduating from college over the past couple of decades, they have been improving their college attainment rate more slowly than other racial and ethnic groups while whites are boosting their college graduation rates more rapidly. This same stagnation in college degrees between older and younger adults was also true for black Americans.
In contrast, younger adult whites are much more likely to have college degrees. What makes the low Latino college degree figures striking is that the trends differ from the graduation data that colleges report. Typically, Latinos have higher graduation rates than black students; that is, they are less likely to drop out and more likely to earn a four-year degree within six years.
When you count the numbers of students who are graduating from each college compared to the number of students who enroll, the Latino-white graduation gap has also been closing. Immigration explains some of the college attainment gap. Almost 30 percent of Latino Americans who were born in the United States have a college degree. By contrast, only 17 percent of Latino adults who were born abroad have a college education.
Affording college is a larger obstacle to undocumented immigrants, who often cannot qualify for in-state tuition at public colleges or obtain federal financial aid. Latino education varies a lot from state to state. In Florida, a third of Latino adults hold a college degree. The number of Latinos with college degrees is rapidly growing in Florida and the Latino-white gap is one of the smallest at 10 percentage points. However, Florida has large Cuban and Puerto Rican populations, many of whom come from well-educated families. Roughly 40 percent of Cuban Americans and 30 percent of Puerto Ricans have college degrees.
By contrast, only 17 percent of Mexican Americans have college degrees, with many Mexicans emigrating from poor, uneducated regions in Mexico. However, the gap between Latinos and whites remains stubbornly high at 29 percentage points. The reasons why Latinos are struggling to obtain a college education are complex.
Nichols pointed out that Latinos are more likely to opt for community colleges and for-profit colleges, where graduation rates are lower. Many are the first in their families to attempt a degree. Reports like this one are a helpful first step in identifying the most difficult obstacles. The next step at The Education Trust is to count how many Latinos ever enrolled in college in each state so that we can better understand how much of these low college numbers are due to college dropouts versus those who never attempt college.
The solutions will be different depending on the answers. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in America, behind heart disease. More than 60 percent of people in this country who die from guns die by suicide. Suicide rates rise sharply across the United States. Suicide rates rose in all but one state between and , with increases seen across age, gender, race and ethnicity, according to a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In more than half of all deaths in 27 states, the people had no known mental health condition when they ended their lives.
In North Dakota, the rate jumped more than 57 percent. In the most recent period studied to , the rate was highest in Montana, at Only Nevada recorded a decline — of 1 percent — for the overall period, although its rate remained higher than the national average. Increasingly, suicide is being viewed not only as a mental health problem but a public health one. Nearly 45, suicides occurred in the United States in — more than twice the number of homicides — making it the 10th-leading cause of death. Among people ages 15 to 34, suicide is the second-leading cause of death.
It is hitting many places especially hard. In half of the states, suicide among people age 10 and older increased more than 30 percent. But homicides still get more attention. One factor in the rising rate, say mental health professionals as well as economists, sociologists and epidemiologists, is the Great Recession that hit 10 years ago. A study in the journal Social Science and Medicine showed evidence that a rise in the foreclosure rate during that concussive downturn was associated with an overall, though marginal, increase in suicide rates.
The increase was higher for white males than any other race or gender group, however. The dramatic rise in opioid addiction also can't be overlooked, experts say, though untangling accidental from intentional deaths by overdose can be difficult. The CDC has calculated that suicides from opioid overdoses nearly doubled between and , and data from a national survey showed that individuals addicted to prescription opioids had a 40 percent to 60 percent higher risk of suicidal ideation.
Habitual users of opioids were twice as likely to attempt suicide as people who did not use them. High suicide numbers in the United States are not a new phenomenon. Kaslow is particularly concerned about what has emerged with suicide among women. That is very, very troublesome. Gordon explains some of the latest research surrounding suicide rates in the U. Among the stark numbers in the CDC report was the one signaling a high number of suicides among people with no diagnosed mental health condition. In the 27 states that use the National Violent Death Reporting System, 54 percent of suicides fell into this category.
But Joshua Gordon, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, said that statistic must be viewed in context. Cultural attitudes may play a part. Those without a known mental health condition, according to the report, were more likely to be male and belong to a racial or ethnic minority. The problems most frequently associated with suicide, according to the study, are strained relationships; life stressors, often involving work or finances; substance use problems; physical health conditions; and recent or impending crises. The most important takeaway, mental health professionals say, is that suicide is an issue not only for the mentally ill but for anyone struggling with serious lifestyle problems.
Because anybody can experience those stresses. People without known mental health conditions were more likely to be male and to die by firearm. The rates of suicide for all states and the District of Columbia were calculated using data from the National Vital Statistics System.
