Instrument orders are placed through the school during the first week of school. Cadet Band students will participate in two mandatory school concert performances per school year: Students wear their school uniform for concerts. This is a year-long advanced band class for student in grades who have successfully completed one or two years of band. No audition is required.
Placement is by Director recommendation only. Students will learn to be proficient and excel in music reading, scales, rhythm, tone production and articulation.
The skills learned in earlier years are further refined; additional scales and more challenging technique is learned. Percussion students learn scales on the mallet instruments and, in addition, learn rudiments and exercises that build coordination and control necessary to play percussion parts. Private lessons are a great help at this level because class size and performance commitments limit the amount of individual instruction a student receives. Students will participate in two mandatory school concerts per year.
It is offered as a year-long morning CCA only. Phuzion uses a traditional "Big Band" instrumentation. In some cases, highly talented students can learn a second instrument for participation for example, a clarinet player could learn saxophone. Students wanting to play guitar, bass, piano or drums must first have a consultation with Director for placement consideration. These instruments are highly competitive, have limited number needed and require a certain skill level in music reading and performance. Singers are guided through the basic elements of choral singing such as proper stance, breath support, vowel formation, balance, blend, diction, projection, part-singing, and good concert etiquette.
The 5 th graders are taught beginning sight-reading, rhythm reading, and the C-major scale. The students will sing mostly 2-part music of varied styles. All choir members will sing on 3 concerts throughout the school year: The students will sing two or three-part music of varied styles.
Sinfonia is an auditioned group for more advanced 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. All students will be expected to know or learn higher positions, vibrato and spiccato bouncing bow. We will continue to practice excellent posture, beautiful tone, sight-reading, ensemble playing and listening skills. This orchestra will perform on 3 or 4 concerts during the school year: October , December, March and May. Cadet Band students will have an opportunity to try out several instruments at the start of the school year.
Cadet Band students who play oboe, bassoon, french horn or bass tuba are provided an instrument for use by the school. This ensemble is geared toward accelerated musicians current students selected through an informal audition. It builds on the foundations established in Cadet Band and Phoenix Band.
For example, there is a limited number of flute and saxophone openings as these are very popular instruments with large numbers of participating students. Students participate in three to four concert performances per year.
In addition, students must have a proven record of reliability and good conduct in order to be considered for this ensemble. Singers are guided through choral singing elements including posture, breath support, vowel formation, balance, blend, diction, projection, independent part-singing, and good concert etiquette.
