Their own base subconscious desires, given free rein and unlimited power by the machine, brought about their quick extinction. Adams asserts that Morbius' subconscious mind created the creature that killed the original expedition and attacked his crew; Morbius refuses to believe him.
After Altaira tells Morbius that she intends to leave with Adams, Robby detects the creature approaching. Morbius commands the robot to kill it, but Robby knows it is a manifestation of Morbius and shuts down. The monster melts through the almost indestructible Krell metal doors of the laboratory where Adams, Altaira, and Morbius have taken refuge. Morbius finally accepts the truth. He confronts and disowns the creature, but is fatally injured, whereupon the monster vanishes.
Before Morbius dies, he has Adams initiate a chain reaction within the Krell reactors, saying everyone must be million miles away within 24 hours. An Earth expedition headed by John Grant is sent to the planet to retrieve Dr. Adams and his daughter Dorianne, who have been stranded there for twenty years. From then on, its plot is roughly the same as that of the completed film, though Grant is able to rescue both Adams and his daughter and escape the invisible monster stalking them.
The film was shot entirely indoors, with all the Altair IV exterior scenes simulated using sets, visual effects , and matte paintings. The ship was surrounded by a huge, painted cyclorama featuring the desert landscape of Altair IV; this one set took up all of the available space in one of the Culver City sound stages.
Principal photography took place from April 18 to late May Later, many costume and prop items were reused in several different episodes of the television series The Twilight Zone , most of which were filmed by Rod Serling 's Cayuga Productions at the MGM studio in Culver City, including Robby the Robot, the various CD models, the full-scale mockup of the base of the ship which featured in the episode To Serve Man , the blaster pistols and rifles, crew uniforms and special effects shots.
Robby later starred in the science fiction film The Invisible Boy and appeared in many TV series and films; like the CD, Robby and his passenger vehicle appeared in various episodes of CBS's The Twilight Zone , usually slightly modified for each appearance. The animated sequences of Forbidden Planet , especially the attack of the monster, were created by the veteran animator Joshua Meador , [15] who was lent out to MGM by Walt Disney Pictures. According to a "Behind the Scenes" featurette on the film's DVD, a close look at the creature shows it to have a small goatee beard, suggesting its connection to Dr.
Morbius, the only character with this physical feature. Unusually, the scene in which the Id Monster is finally revealed during its attack on the Earth ship was not created using traditional cel animation. Instead, Meador simply sketched each frame of the entire sequence in black pencil on white paper; each page was then photographed in high contrast, so that only the major details remained visible. These images were then photographically reversed into negative and the resulting white line images were then tinted red, creating the effect of the Id Monster's body remaining largely invisible, with only its major outlines illuminated by the energy from the force-field and blaster beams.
Forbidden Planet had its world premiere at the Southeastern Science Fiction Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 3 and 4, , [1] and opened in more than cities on March 23 [16] in CinemaScope , Eastmancolor , [17] and in some theaters, stereophonic sound , either by the magnetic or Perspecta processes.
The film received positive reviews from critics. Bosley Crowther of The New York Times wrote that everyone who worked on the film certainly "had a barrel of fun with it. And, if you've got an ounce of taste for crazy humor, you'll have a barrel of fun, too. Scheuer of the Los Angeles Times wrote that the film was "more than another science-fiction movie, with the emphasis on fiction; it is a genuinely thought-through concept of the future, and the production MGM has bestowed on it gives new breadth and dimension to that time-worn phrase, 'out of this world.
Forbidden Planet was re-released to film theaters during as one of MGM's "Kiddie Matinee" features; it was missing about six minutes of film footage cut to ensure it received a "G" rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. The American Film Institute nominated the film for their top 10 science fiction films. Warner's release offered both cropped and widescreen picture formats on the same disc. For the film's 50th anniversary, the Ultimate Collector's Edition was released on November 28, , in an oversized red metal box, using the original film poster for its wraparound cover. Science Fiction, The s and Us.
Shortly before the film was released, a novelization appeared in hardcover and then later in mass-market paperback ; it was written by W. Stuart the mystery novelist Philip MacDonald writing under the pseudonym , which chapters the novel into separate first person narrations by Dr.
Ostrow, Commander Adams, and Dr. In the novel, he repeatedly exposes himself to the Krell's manifestation machine, which as suggested in the film boosts his brain power far beyond normal human intelligence. Unfortunately, Morbius retains enough of his imperfect human nature to be afflicted with hubris and a contempt for humanity. Not recognizing his own base primitive drives and limitations proves to be Morbius' downfall, as it had for the extinct Krell. While not stated explicitly in the film although the basis for a deleted scene first included as an extra with the Criterion Collection 's LaserDisc set and included with both the later 50th anniversary DVD and current Blu-ray releases , the novelization compared Altaira's ability to tame the tiger until her sexual awakening with Commander Adams to the medieval myth of a unicorn being tamable only by a virgin.
The novel also includes an element never included in the film: Ostrow dissects one of the dead Earth-type animals, he discovers that its internal structure precludes it from ever having been alive in the normal biological sense. The tiger, deer, and monkey are all conscious creations by Dr. Morbius using the great machine as companions "pets" for his daughter and only outwardly resemble their Earth counterparts. Since the Krell's Great Machine can project matter "in any form" it has the power to create life.
Thus, the Krell's self-destruction can be interpreted by the reader as a cosmic punishment for misappropriating the life-creating power of the universe. This is why Commander Adams says in his speech to Altaira " Forbidden Planet ' s innovative electronic music score, credited as "electronic tonalities", partly to avoid having to pay any of the film industry music guild fees, [ citation needed ] was composed by Bebe and Louis Barron.
MGM producer Dore Schary discovered the couple quite by chance at a beatnik nightclub in Greenwich Village while on a family Christmas visit to New York City ; Schary hired them on the spot to compose his film's musical score.
While the theremin which was not used in Forbidden Planet had been used on the soundtrack of Alfred Hitchcock 's Spellbound , the Barrons' electronic composition is credited with being the first completely electronic film score; their soundtrack preceded the invention of the Moog synthesizer by eight years Using ideas and procedures from the book Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine by the mathematician and electrical engineer Norbert Wiener , Louis Barron constructed his own electronic circuits that he used to generate the score's "bleeps, blurps, whirs, whines, throbs, hums, and screeches".
After recording the basic sounds, the Barrons further manipulated the sounds by adding other effects, such as reverberation and delay, and reversing or changing the speeds of certain sounds. Since Bebe and Louis Barron did not belong to the Musicians Union, their work could not be considered for an Academy Award , in either the "soundtrack" or the "sound effects" categories. MGM declined to publish a soundtrack album at the time that Forbidden Planet was released. His main title theme had been discarded when Rose, who had originally been hired to compose the musical score in , was discharged from the project by Dore Schary sometime between Christmas and New Year's Day.
The film's original theatrical trailer contains snippets of Rose's score, the tapes of which Rose reportedly later destroyed. They also introduced the first of three packed-house screenings that showed an MGM 35mm fine grain vault print in original CinemaScope and stereophonic sound. A decade later, in , their soundtrack was released on a music CD for the film's 30th Anniversary, with a six-page color booklet containing images from Forbidden Planet , plus liner notes from the composers, Bebe and Louis Barron, and Bill Malone.
A tribute to the film's soundtrack was performed live in concert by Jack Dangers , available on disc one of the album Forbidden Planet Explored. The following is a list of compositions on the CD: The costumes worn by Anne Francis were designed by Helen Rose. Robby the Robot was operated by diminutive stuntman Frankie Darro. He was fired during filming after almost falling over while in the expensive prop, following a five-martini lunch.
In late September several screen-used items from Forbidden Planet were offered in Profiles in History 's Hollywood Auction 74, including Walter Pidgeon's "Morbius" costume, an illuminating blaster rifle, blaster pistol, a force field generator post, and an original Sascha Brastoff steel prehistoric fish sculpture seen outside Morbius' home; also offered were several lobby cards and publicity photos. In the opening of the film, the narrator mentions that humanity landed on the Moon for the first time in the last decade of the 21st century.
However, that prediction was incorrect due to humanity first landing on the Moon in the s. The narrator also mentions that all the Solar System's planets were visited by AD and then faster than light drive was invented shortly afterward. An Australian radio adaptation using the original electronic music and noted local actors was broadcast in June on The Caltex Radio Theatre. In Stephen King's The Tommyknockers , Altair-4 is frequently referenced as the home planet of the titular alien presence. Elements of the Doctor Who serial Planet of Evil were consciously based on the film.
Forbidden Planet and star Anne Francis are named alongside ten other classic science fiction films in the opening song " Science Fiction Double Feature " in the stage musical The Rocky Horror Show and its subsequent film adaptation. While this was not the intent of the show's producer, the special effects crew, tasked with creating the imagery, stated that the Krell's machine was a definite influence on their Epsilon III designs. The Outer Limits episode " The Man with the Power " revisits the premise of a person's subconscious manifesting as a destructive, murderous entity. In the first Mass Effect game while examining the planets in the Gagarin system of the Armstrong Nebula, on the planet's Junthor survey feed about the planet.

In DreamWorks set up the project with David Twohy set to direct. Michael Straczynski was announced as writing a remake, Joel Silver was to produce. His vision for the film would not be retro, because when the original was made it was meant to be futuristic.
Straczynski met with people working in astrophysics , planetary geology , and artificial intelligence to reinterpret the Krell back-story as a film trilogy. Another remake effort appears to be underway by Ragnarok Creative following a preliminary effort by Studio Ronin in At present alternative design stills and an upcoming trailer are mentioned, though the previous trailer by Studio Ronin appears to have been withdrawn.
In , partly in response to Lieder's proclamations, Sitchin published a book, The End of Days , which set the time for the last passing of Nibiru by Earth at BC, which would mean, given the object's supposed 3,year orbit, that it would return sometime around AD After Lieder, the first person to propagate her Planet X idea was Mark Hazlewood, a former member of the ZetaTalk community, who in published a book titled Blindsided: Planet X Passes in Lieder would later accuse him of being a confidence trickster.
Though Lieder herself has not specified a new date for the object's return, many groups have taken up her idea and cited their own dates.
The Hidden Planet Mystery Tour at The Pulse shopping complex in Repulse Bay is a family-friendly event that includes light-themed attractions, from the Rainbo. Astronomers found a strange dwarf world that provides even more evidence that a giant planet is lurking at the edge of our solar system.
One frequently cited date was December 21, This date had many apocalyptic associations, as it was the end of a cycle baktun in the long count in the Mayan calendar. Several writers published books connecting the encounter with In , Lieder claimed that U. President Barack Obama futilely attempted to announce the presence of Nibiru near the Sun. Two weeks after the supposed date of announcement, she claimed that it did not occur because of consternation amongst the establishment.
In , a conspiracy theorist and self-proclaimed "Christian numerologist" named David Meade revived the Nibiru cataclysm by tying it to various passages from the Bible. Meade's claims received extensive media attention. Graney, a professor with the Vatican Observatory Foundation, noted that the supposedly unique event was, in fact, quite common, having occurred four times in the last millennium. After his predictions failed to come true, Meade revised them and declared that Nibiru would arrive on 5 October , not on 23 September.
When October came, another apocalyptic writer, Terral Croft, predicted the arrival of Nibiru for November 19; a prediction again reported in the British tabloid press. Croft describes Nibiru as a "black star" at the edge of our Solar System, which, rather than colliding with Earth, would form an apocalyptic conjunction with Earth, leading to massive earthquakes. Croft claimed that earthquakes have been increasing worldwide in the leadup to the conjunction, though The Washington Post , quoting the United States Geological Survey , was quick to point out that earthquakes had decreased in both power and frequency over the year.
Astronomers reject the idea of Nibiru, and have made efforts to inform the public that there is no threat to Earth. An orbit like that of Nibiru within our Solar System is inconsistent with celestial mechanics. David Morrison, NASA space scientist explains that after just one previous flyby of Earth, such as they claim happened in Sumerian times, Earth itself would no longer be in its current near circular orbit and would be likely to have lost its Moon.
If Nibiru were a brown dwarf it would have even worse effects, as brown dwarfs are far more massive. Astronomer Mike Brown notes that if this object's orbit were as described, it would only have remained in the Solar System for about a million years before Jupiter expelled it, and, even if such a planet existed, its magnetic field would have no effect on Earth's. In his rebuttal of Immanuel Velikovsky 's Worlds in Collision , which made the same claim that the Earth's rotation could be stopped and then restarted, Carl Sagan noted that, "the energy required to brake the Earth is not enough to melt it, although it would result in a noticeable increase in temperature: The oceans would [be] raised to the boiling point of water The Earth cannot do it by itself, because of the law of the conservation of angular momentum.
In a interview with the Discovery Channel , Mike Brown noted that, while it is not impossible that the Sun has a distant planetary companion, such an object would have to be lying very far from the observed regions of the Solar System to have no detectable gravitational effect on the other planets. At that speed, any object would be shot out of the Solar System, and then out of the Milky Way galaxy into intergalactic space. One such accusation involves the IRAS infrared space observatory, launched in The satellite briefly made headlines due to an "unknown object" that was at first described as "possibly as large as the giant planet Jupiter and possibly so close to Earth that it would be part of this Solar System".
Another accusation frequently made by websites predicting the collision is that the U. Its South Pole location was chosen due to the low-humidity environment, and there is no way an approaching object could be seen only from the South Pole. Another conspiracy claim regards a patch of missing data in Google Sky near the constellation of Orion, which has often been cited as evidence that Nibiru has been redacted.
However, the same region of sky can still be viewed by thousands of amateur astronomers. A scientist at Google said that the missing data is due to a glitch in the stitching software used to piece the images together. All are, in fact, names for other real, hypothetical or imaginary Solar System objects that bear little resemblance either to the planet described by Lieder or to Nibiru as described by Sitchin.
Lieder drew the name Planet X from the hypothetical planet once searched for by astronomers to account for discrepancies in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. He concluded that they were being tugged by the gravity of another, more distant planet, which he called "Planet X".
The discrepancies remained through to the s when the astronomer Robert Harrington put forward his hypothesis for an extra planet beyond Neptune with, as one example, a semi-major axis Six months before Harrington died of throat cancer [77] [78] in , astronomer Myles Standish showed that the supposed discrepancies in the planets' orbits were illusory, the product of overestimating the mass of Neptune. This is frequently claimed to be an observation of 'Nibiru'. In , New Age author V. Rabolu wrote in Hercolubus or Red Planet that Barnard's star is actually a planet known to the ancients as Hercolubus, which purportedly came dangerously close to Earth in the past, destroying Atlantis , and will come close to Earth again.
Barnard's star has been directly measured to be 5. In , Muller postulated that mass extinctions were not random, but appeared to occur in the fossil record with a loose periodicity that ranged from 26 to 34 million years. He attributed this supposed pattern to a heretofore undetected companion to the Sun, either a dim red dwarf or a brown dwarf , lying in an elliptical, million-year orbit. This object, which he named Nemesis, would, once every 26 million years, pass through the Oort cloud , the shell of over a trillion icy objects believed to be the source of long-period comets that orbit at thousands of times Pluto's distance from the Sun.
Nemesis's gravity would then disturb the comets' orbits and send them into the inner Solar System, causing the Earth to be bombarded. However, to date no direct evidence of Nemesis has been found. Other people also confuse Nibiru with Sedna Sedna or Eris Eris , trans-Neptunian objects discovered by Mike Brown in and respectively. Only slightly more massive than Pluto, [94] Eris has a well-determined orbit that never takes it closer to the Earth than 5. Others have tied it to Tyche , [98] the name proposed by John Matese and Daniel Whitmire of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for an object they believe to be influencing the orbits of comets in the Oort cloud.
Some associated Nibiru with Comet Elenin , [] a long-period comet discovered by Russian astronomer Leonid Elenin on December 10, Comet hysteria is not uncommon. He demonstrated that its gravity would have caused noticeable changes in the orbit of Saturn years before its arrival in the inner Solar System. In August, , Comet Elenin began to disintegrate, [] [] and by the time of its closest approach in October the comet was undetected even by large ground-based telescopes.
While a dim remnant did eventually return round the Sun, it was generally accepted to be a cloud of dust, rather than a solid object. In March , astronomers Chad Trujillo and Scott Sheppard published a paper in Nature arguing that the apparent clustering of the arguments of perihelion of distant trans-Neptunian objects suggested the existence of a large trans-Neptunian planet.
However, astronomers pointed out that this planet, if it exists, would have a perihelion closest approach to the Sun of roughly AU, or 30 billion km.
In March , believers in the Nibiru cataclysm began to suggest that the month marked the true date for Nibiru's arrival and the destruction of Earth. The impact of the public fear of the Nibiru cataclysm has been especially felt by professional astronomers. In , Mike Brown said that Nibiru was the most common pseudoscientific topic he was asked about. NASA frequently has to evaluate whether or not to respond to such claims, and the value of reassuring the public is outweighed by the risk of granting further exposure to a completely non-scientific idea.
Morrison noted in a lecture recorded on FORA. A viral marketing campaign for Sony Pictures ' film , directed by Roland Emmerich , which depicts the end of the world in the year , featured a supposed warning from the "Institute for Human Continuity" that listed the arrival of Planet X as one of its doomsday scenarios.
