While Robert Guiscard, the initiator of the Norman campaigns against the Byzantine Empire, still did not fully realize the meaning of the growing Greek-Latin controversy and the possibility of using it to legitimize his goals, his son Bohemond exploited this factor to its full extent and used it to discredit his political opponent, Byzantine Emperor Alexius.
When the conflict escalated, Bohemond charged the Greek Church in general with heresy, and demanded a remedy from the pope, even though the Roman Curia and other Latin theologians did not consider this matter crucial or problematic at that time. By these standards, anyone not in harmony with the Apostolic See could be considered a heretic.
The Epistola ad Paschalem II papam is the only preserved letter written in the context of the expedition led by prince Bohemond of Antioch against the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos. This document is rightly considered as the most This document is rightly considered as the most important evidence of the increasing anti-Byzantine propaganda after the First Crusade. In the present paper, the authors focus on the textual tradition of this letter and the broader context and circumstances that lead to its emergence.
Memoria Hungariae, 4 Debrecen, Achilles, Athena, and the Thunderbolt: Divine barbarians in the epic known as "The Alexiad". All these campaigns were initially successful, but ended up being military failures. Before three of these four attacks, a man who claimed to be a deposed Byzantine emperor or a son of his showed up at the Hauteville court.
However, the sources suggest quite clearly that two of these alleged exiles were actually Greek imposters who had nothing to do with any Eastern imperial family, and that the Norman rulers were definitely aware of this.
In this paper I will first analyse in depth these three cases. Then, I will try to explain why the Norman leaders still tried to take advantage of these men for their campaigns. Or did they think that the motivation of restoring a deposed emperor would make it more likely for them to obtain western support for their campaigns? Did they hope that the attacked population would recognise the imposter as the legitimate emperor, and therefore back their invasion?
The years between the end of the eleventh century and the beginning of the twelfth century witnessed the rise of two important powers in the Adriatic area: Events during an innocuous Thanksgiving holiday bring the walls tumbling down on the preconceived life both women appear to take for granted. Also well explained is how Venice completely changed the course and plans of the Crusaders. Clearly i now have a different viewpoint on the crusades. All of the Crusades were tragic. The Fourth Crusade stands out as hardly a "crusade" at all. This marauding medieval army ravaging the Christian East is more like a Viking tale of conquest and plunder. Its sack of Constantinople echos as one of the saddest milestones in the history of "Western Civilization". But though I hated the author's self-serving justifications of their aggression, I loved reading his eyewitness account of the whole affair.
Though their mission repelled me, I could not help but admire the determination and strength of these men. Much like us, only stronger, and ultimately the strong do sweep aside the weak. And I could not help but wonder how easily my own principals could be subverted as theirs were? There is much to learn about human nature in reading the history of the early Catholic Church, and the people in it, as well as the leadership of the early kings. The demonstration of the true reason for the Crusade was not for the reasons stated, as much killing, looting, and raping in the cause that was not ordained by God.
Kind of tedious reading, but interesting to get firsthand information from a participant in this crusade. I forced myself to read the thing just to get a better perspective on what the crusades were like. Reads like a journal translated journal.
