She simply believes a marriage should be built on true love. Her father, however, thinks she's wasted enough time searching for the perfect husband. He wants to marry her off to one of his business partners - who is 17 years her senior - an idea that is out of the question for Lenore. After her father's death, Mariah Malone sends a letter that will forever alter the lives of her family.
When Slade Donovan, strong willed and eager for vengeance, shows up on her front porch, Mariah is not ready to hear his truths: Her father's farm, the only home she's ever known, was bought with stolen gold. Hillman has woven a riveting Western tale complete with an unsolved mystery to figure out.
Fast-paced and packing an emotional punch, I just couldn't put it down and finished it in a day. Slade's struggle with forgiveness and the desire to extract his own vengeance has defined him since boyhood. Being a party to this chivalrous, decent, compassionate hero's conflicting struggle made for a fascinating read. He's such an enigma. Mariah is spunky and determined but oh so stubborn and she clashes with Slade from their first meeting. Understandably since he's determined to uproot her family from the only home she's ever known but that stubbornness doesn't help her cause.
Watching their attraction develop and grow amidst all that conflict makes for a roller coaster read! My favorite quote from the book: Mar 08, Natali rated it really liked it Shelves: Beautiful story about forgiveness. Mar 25, Kathleen Kat Smith rated it it was amazing Shelves: Just when things couldn't get any worse for Mariah Malone, in rode trouble.
Tall, dark and handsome Slade Donovan was about to change Mariah's life in an unbelievable way. After losing her father, she has managed to attempt to hold down things at her father's cattle ranch the best she could, but after fighting a losing battle after two years of profits she wasn't prepared for what Slade had on his mind. In response to her letter advising him that she had recently been made aware of her father st Just when things couldn't get any worse for Mariah Malone, in rode trouble. In response to her letter advising him that she had recently been made aware of her father stealing half of the gold between her father and Slade's, she wanted to make things right.
She wanted to offer him a cut of her cattle in hopes of mending the broken fences that kept the two families at odds. Only Slade wanted more than simply a pay off from Mariah. Armed with proof that the mine that both men found gold in was in his father's name only, anything bought with that gold was his, and he wanted to make sure that he got back what he believed he was entitled to and that meant the ranch and everything on it. Believing that God had an answer for this shocking revelation, Slade's brother Buck was able to convince Slade to allow Mariah and her aging grandmother to stay on the ranch until his family finally came to settle in, and would pay for her upkeep of the house and meals for him and his brother.
Mariah knew that the only way she and her grandmother could hope of traveling back to Philadelphia was to accept Slade's offer and save everything she could. But soon Slade discovers the reason why the ranch hasn't been turning a profit and believes that Mariah's mismanagement of the cattle sales to pay for her sisters school in Philadelphia is something she has long overlooked. Without giving her a chance to explain, he immediately shuts down any attempt she makes and keeps his opinions to himself. Mariah concedes to sign the deed to the cattle ranch over to Slade as long as he promises he will keep the real reasons for the sale private to keep her family name intact in town.
Will the two of them be able to work together long enough for them both to benefit or will the anger that Slade has in his heart drive her away forever? I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained in this review are strictly my own. I love how Pam wrote this story from the hearts and perspectives of both Mariah and Slade. Mariah's faith keeps her strong in spite of the circumstances that threaten to leave her homeless and with nothing, while Slade keeps fighting the faith that Mariah has to keep God out for the unanswered prayers he had as a child.
He loves what he sees in Mariah but can't see past his own hard heart for the answers to peace and happiness. Where as his brother Buck who is facing his own challenging odds keeps God in perspective and realizes that nothing that happens is God's fault. It will take an act of faith to bring Slade around. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars! Pam Hillman is now one of my must have authors!
I am completely addicted to her western novels. Apr 03, Jalynn Patterson rated it it was amazing. Frederick About the Book: Pam Hillman was born and raised on a dairy farm in Mississippi and spent her teenage years perched on the seat of a tractor raking hay. In those days, her daddy couldn't afford two cab tractors with air conditioning and a radio, so Pam drove the Allis Chalmers Even when her daddy asked her if she wanted to bale hay, she told him she didn't mind raking. Raking hay doesn't take much thought so Pam spent her time working on her tan and making up stories in her head.
Now, that's the kind of life every girl should dream of! Claiming Mariah is her second novel. After her father's death, Mariah sent a letter out to a family to ask of her father's forgiveness. But little did she expect that the sons of this family would show up on her door step, demanding what they say is rightfully theirs.
Her father's ranch, they say was bought with stolen gold that was theirs. She has a hard time believing them, especially the really handsome one. He says since it was his fathers stolen gold, that it is only right for her to hand over the ranch. But he soon see's even after she hands it over, that she has no where to go. Slade finds Mariah to be very pretty and was almost going to cave, but he can't he's doing this for his father even if his father was dead.
With Mariah having no where to go, Slade makes quite a deal with her, one she wants to refuse but can't. Slade has a feeling he is going to regret his decision in making her a deal, but he can't let her just leave with no where to go. Slade has to come up with a way to fix it all. A single letter will begin a journey that forever changes the lives of those involved. Mariah Malone and Slade Donovan are bound for conflict from the moment rides on to her land. What begins as a relationship of forced convenience unravels in to one of tumultuous circumstances that leave both Mariah and Slade drawn together in a way neither could have predicted.
Mariah is, as only truly great characters can be, flawed in such a completely human way that I found myself lost in her world, completely unaware of the late hours I was keeping in my own! Paired with the slightly mysterious Slade who surprises the reader with both his fierce determination and his gentle heart, the two are a great duo. But, instead of sheer literary happenstance, I read of everyday miscommunications and thoughtless accusations very present in our world today that put more and more distance between Mariah and Slade, desiring more pages instead of less.
While most of the sparks seem to fly between Mariah and Slade, the supporting cast reveals much more of the story than anticipated. A bit of suspense is wound in with the romantic as a secondary plot unties devious plans, theft, and murder. Find this review and others like it at www. May 18, Gayle Pace rated it really liked it.
After her father died, Mariah Malone, at the young age of 23 is working her father's ranch and trying to make it work. She also has the huge responsibility of taking care of her blind sister, Amanda and her elderly grandmother. To top that off she is trying to evade the local dandy's marriage proposal. She has enough, with trying to make it on the ranch without having this "dandy" constantly after her about getting married.
In walks Slade Donovan, tall, dark and one hunk of a cowboy. He has something to prove to Mariah that isn't going to help her face all she is dealing with. Slade has proof that Mariah's father had shot and left for dead a man, being Slade's father, and stole some precious gold. It also seems that the mine where the stolen gold came from was his father's. Since Mariah's father had used the stolen gold to buy the ranch, Slade wants the land and the ranch. Mariah agrees to sign the ranch over to Slade, trying to save the family name. Buck, Slade's brother convinces Slade to let Mariah and her grandmother to stay at the ranch for a while.
We have a woman who believes in God and a man who has lost his faith. As Slade and Mariah work together to run the ranch, they are becoming more adjusted to each other.
Is love in the works? Will they be able to admit to each other that they love each other? Can they forgive and put the past aside? As Mariah holds on to her faith, Slade fights it every inch of the way. He knows he loves her but won't let go of the pride that is holding him back. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is easy to read and follow and may make you reflect on forgiveness and letting go. Also trusting in God to lead you in the right direction if you only listen. The book held your attention and didn't weight you down.
It was like a old west life that you could find yourself easily fitting in. You wanted to reach out sometimes and just shake Slade and tell him to wake up, but you keep turning the pages to find out what will happen next. Will there be a sequel where we learn a little more about Buck and the other characters? If you love good ole' western love stories, here's the one for you. It not only gives you a good love story but much more.
No other compensation took place. I felt the book brought out a few lessons in a subtle way. The author shows how two very different people can work together and through all the problems to find the path to love. Feb 05, Teresa Mathews rated it it was amazing. Wisdom is a quiet town that is filled with God-fearing, hardworking folks. Mariah Malone's father, Seth was one of those descent and respected citizens; everyone will be shocked if the truth comes out of how he bought his ranch. Mariah Malone has a hard time believing her father's death-bed confession of a terrible offense he committed as a young man.
Seth had partnered with Jack Donovan in a goldmine and it seems Seth did some dishonest things. After hearing this news Mariah helps her father write a letter to Jack Donovan asking forgiveness. Months later when Slade Donovan and his brother Buck arrives, Mariah is shocked to hear there was a lot more to the story than her father told her. Slade tells her he is there to claim the ranch that was bought with his father's money and he wants her out of his house and off of his land! Slade never thought he would find a beautiful young woman running the Lazy M Ranch, in fact he hadn't thought about anything but the life-long hatred he's had for Seth Malone on the long trip to Wisdom.
Now the only thing that matters is taking what rightfully belongs to him, and if that means Mariah and her grandma are left homeless then so be it. After Slade shows Mariah the deed to the goldmine; which doesn't have her father's name on it, she feels she has to do what he asks. What will she do?
Where will she go and how will she explain to her elderly grandmother that her son has caused them to lose the only home Mariah had ever known? After having a talk with his brother Buck, Slade has a change of heart and tells Mariah that she can stay on as a hired cook until his mother and sisters come. What a life changing decision that will be! Does God have a plan to bring peace and forgiveness to the hearts of these two people that have been hurt by their fathers? This is the first book I have read by Ms.
Hillman and what a pleasure it was. Being raised in a home with a dad that loved Westerns this book was just like a trip down memory lane for me. There are cowboys, cattle and of course your run-of-the-mill cattle rustlers, and let's not forget the wonderful romance thrown in.
The story line was so good it had me when I read the blurb on the back. Ms Hillman is certainly a talented writer and I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this story especially how she dealt with the hurt and unforgiveness in both Mariah and Slade's life. It served to remind me that when you hold on to unforgiveness you only hurt yourself.
Hillman for an absolutely fantastic read! Slade Donovan and Mariah Malone are supposed to intensely dislike each other. Her father's theft left his father desperate and on the path to an early grave. It doesn't matter that the elder Malone repented before he died. That didn't solve the Donovan's problems.
