This is one of the few novella length pieces that I have read recently where the story does not suffer for the length. Nov 26, Loves To Dive rated it really liked it. Her relationship with the kelpie king, Ceffyl, is slowly heating up, although Ivy is still reluctant to do more than kiss, since just by touching she can read everything about an object or person. Life is pretty good, but now the holidays are approaching and Ivy is not in a festive sort of mind.
There is a serial killer on the loose who is targeting the fae.
Six have been found brutally murdered with no clues evident except for a spring of mistletoe left in a pool of blood. Stevens since I read the first book in her YA Spirit Guide series, and was glad when she decided to dip her toes into the adult world with this series. Ivy is so full of sass and spunk, she manages to be tough and vulnerable all at the same time. She is just plain fun to visit with.
Stevens has given her a somewhat acerbic temperament, but still manages to make us like her despite it. You know from the beginning that Ivy has a slightly warped sense of humor and that even though you might see some disturbing things during the story, Ivy is going to pull you through. For example, early in the story when Forneus appears in the office and Jinx is not happy to see him: Minor characters from the first book appear throughout this one as well.
Marvin, a teenage bridge troll, is getting on well living with Kaye and her hearth brownie, Hob. We briefly met a hunter named Jenna in the previous book, and she helps Ivy out again. While listed as a novella, at 54 pages it is shorter than most and I suppose it would be called a novelette; Ms. Stevens titled it as Ivy Granger 1. Stevens is really starting to hit her stride with this series, and I am enjoying her foray into the adult world.
Jan 06, Melissa Hayden rated it really liked it Shelves: We get a strong feel of the magic, creatures and fey in the world in this novella. I will say, with all the magic in this world the author, E.
The explanations are all there in what's happening - like detecting demons and connections. I liked the addition of two voices to the story, it keeps my attention. Fo We get a strong feel of the magic, creatures and fey in the world in this novella. Forneus, the demon, shows up unexpected and unwanted by Jinx at the office. He shares that there is news of five dead fey in Harborsmouth from both Seelie and Unseelie Courts. The deeper Ivy digs into the case the more she learns of the Christmas connection of the murders, with a piece of mistletoe left at each scene and the type of fey murdered.
The Winter Solstice is approaching, and a night where magics are strong.
Ivy discovers one of the few she cares deeply for is missing. Now Ivy has to find the killer before the night when all they've worked for is completed. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the two narrators. The female voice, Melanie, is not over the top with sweetness for the characters. She voices feelings as she reads with the right amount of emotions. The male voices, David, does all the male characters as needed and narrations like the Introduction. Also, when David has to do the sexy sound of Ceff, he does it well.
We see creatures and individuals we've meet in the first book, and a mystery with Ivy is remembered as well. I'm hoping to learn this small piece in the future. I really enjoy Jinx as Ivy's friend and partner in business. She tells Ivy when she's acting like a kid. She lays things out there as it is. There are even new beings we come across and make deals with.
Ivy still comes across on the sweet and too kind side but she's pushing her limits and trying to do to help others.
When Ivy puts her life in risk, thinks take a turn for the darker side of the fey and this is what I look forward to reading. I have a feeling a few things mentioned and what this book lead up to will show up in the future. One thing is Ivy agreeing to take on fighting training by Jenna the Hunter. The other maybe with Ceff. I really enjoyed the creation of the world and E. She's created a vast world of fey. Mar 19, angela rated it it was amazing. Blood and Mistletoe, Author: Stevens Another excellent book from the Ivy Granger series.
I'm loving this series more and more, as I get to know the characters better and their relationships with each other. It's a small intimate, group of close friends who really care about each other, their community, and the people who live there. They're committed to each other, and the need to keep paranormal incidents to a minimum. All while being their sassy, quirky selves. There are a few more, book: There are a few more, sort of friends around now. A Demon name Forneus, that apparently likes Jinx. The feeling isn't reciprocated. So, they go round and round. Ivy's boyfriend, Ceff the kelpie king then, Jenna a human, paranormal hunter.
In this episode Marvin the sweetest Troll disappears, at a very inopportune time. Since there is a serial killer about. So, Ivy is off to try and save the town once again and hopefully Marvin. So, Ivy calls in Jenna one of the hunter's to help her. Let's just say they walk into MUCH, more than they bargained for!!! It's also the Christmas season and Kaye is throwing a solstice party, clothing optional. It should be quite an interesting party. Especially with all the different paranormal beings. Ceff brings Ivy a gift, the best gift he could have ever given her.
She is very happy and giddy over this gift. I look forward to seeing how she uses it. I just can't get enough of these books, there funny, gory, written with style, sass and attention to detail. Always, leaving you wanting more. Needing to find out what happens next, with these quirky, sassy and truly entertaining characters. With each book, you see the characters grow, and evolving.
Truly a treat to read. I was given a copy of this book from the Author, I reviewed it on my own. Sep 30, Jennifer rated it really liked it Shelves: This review was originally published at The Bawdy Book Blog. It was furnished by the author in exchange of an honest review. Stevens, author of She Smells the Dead, has got herself another hit with her novella and companion story to her Ivy Granger series, Blood and Mistletoe.
Ivy has been tasked by Forneus with finding out why Seelie and Unseelie fae are being murdered, if for any other reason but to keep the wolf from the door and good coffee in her cup. You know, the important things. The story is pretty creepy… a deranged fae is on a killing spree and is trying to do some sort of necromancer stuff?
Ivy has her work cut out for her determining who and why. Oh yeah, and we get to experience more of her gift firsthand, as she touches things and dives into the memories of objects to catch the bastard.
Her relationship with Ceff at the end of Shadow Sight was delightful, but I do wish there had been more of it, or more of them together, in Blood and Mistletoe. There is serious chemistry between them, and I really hope Stevens brings more of their relationship into focus in the following books. Jun 12, Melanie rated it really liked it Shelves: My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.
Yes, it takes place during the holidays. Yes, there are gifts exchanged. That is pretty much where the holidays end. Something is killing fae. The only thing that is in common, is that the victims My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.
The only thing that is in common, is that the victims are fae. Ivy needs to figure out who and why these deaths are happening. This is a short story, at a little over two hours, but it is a full story. We get to spend some time with some of my favorite characters in Kaye the witch, Marvin the teenage bridge troll and Hob the Brownie. It was a great listen to fit in between some of my other listens. I have listened to different narrators that changed with chapters, but this one changed with sentences. That was a little jarring to me. The narrators were great, but everytime a male characters spoke, we went from a female to a male narrating.
I would be willing to listen to either narrator if they read the entire book. I would also mention that I like the narrator who does the full length books better for this series. This is a case of just not my style of narration. I like to thanks E. Stevens for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
When I call this quirky fantasy, it's partially because of the cover of the book and partially because of the content. Stevens writes about a psychic detective, Ivy Grainger who can tell things by touch. She also has a degree of second sight. Stevens mixes in a quirky grouping of characters and creatures. Strangely enough, this 87 page book kept me totally engaged.
It's the quality of her writing that does it. Forneus has a thing for Jinx. Unfortunately, he makes her skin crawl. Anyway, Forneus calls Ivy and tells her about this case, 5 dead bodies, fae bodies. And he wants credit for the information, of course. Initially, it seems unlikely that this is really a case. Five unrelated dead fae. Not exactly someone to mess with lightly. But, the Fairy Mistress is all cuddled up with the skeleton of an old lover who once made beautiful music. She's decided she wants to hear his music again. So she's got Red Caps working for her creating what amounts to a big rotisserie with these five bodies in a ceremony designed to return the old lover to his body.
It's a good thing that Ivy has such good friends and that they are willing to help her out when she's in a tough spot. Ivy's not much in a fight. But the Fairy Mistress and Red Caps get defeated and the fire put out. Ivy's feisty and smart. She's willing to learn from those who have skills she needs and it's a good thing.
So Jenna will be training Ivy how to fight. In the meantime, Ceffyl, King of the Kelpies, has a possible cure for the problem Ivy has that stops them from being close. All they need is time, now. Ceff is getting just a tad impatient! Oct 30, Freda Mans-Labianca rated it really liked it. I read and reviewed Shadow Sight, and even though it wasn't the most perfect book I have ever read, it was exciting and interesting enough that I wanted to carry on the series.
Ivy Granger is not your average private detective, because she has a paranormal ability. With that ability comes relationships with beings that normal people are not meant to have, like vampires and faeries. It's Ivy's job, with the help of some great characters, to solve problems and crimes in the paranormal and reality realms.
This novella picks up exactly where Shadow Sight left off. Same people, same place. That was good, I prefer series to do that. I have to admit though, this story packed a little more punch than the first book for me. In a short period of time, it became like salt in a dish. It gave the original story more flavor. I now look more forward to another book than I did previously, which is a good thing. This novella actually felt like an extension of action from the first story. This is a series I think most paranormal fans are going to love.
Of course you can't have one without the other though, so read book one first.
