And she longs to get her crazy young brother, Bird, to stop thinking that he might be the Messiah - as well as to stop picking his nose with his arm around his face. There is something sweetly humane about the way Krauss describes the confused family. When Krauss describes Alma's first kiss, with a young Russian immigrant friend - "His tongue was in my mouth.
A tale of love, loss, and longing. The subtle elements of humour in it make it the brilliant book it is. Both books feature a precocious youth who set out in New York City on a quest. Survival may happen by accident, but it usually continues by will. It believes that at our very core, we are beings that are capable of giving parts and wholes of ourselves to people, to romantic partners, to parents, to sons and daughters, to siblings, to family, to friends, to strangers, to those who need us.
I didn't know if I should touch my tongue to his, or leave it off to the side so his tongue could move unconstrained by mine" - there is all the awkwardness of adolescence that later begins to blossom into the power of desire. But as the novel progresses the patterns of the plot become tighter, and threaten to drain the life out of the characters. And although Krauss uses the historical dislocation of the Holocaust as the reason for Gursky's broken life, the fact that the outcome is so elegant and the emotions are always described in such a stylish, glancing way means that we never get the sense that we are coming up against any real horror or despair.
The very fact that Gursky carries the candle for his own Alma until his dying day - even though she marries somebody else and has children he stays faithful to her - gives a rather fairytale feel to the whole novel. When the old Alma is dying in Manhattan he goes every day to sit at her bedside in the hospital after hours.

You may need to stop at times and think about where a previous story line left off.
And instead of being annoyed, you'll be entranced by the layers and flow. This is a beautiful story that deliciously, and often heart-breakingly, weaves past and present. I laughed, cried, feared, mourned, and loved, right along with each character.
It's the kind of book I like to read over many days, a little at a time, to savor and digest. Again we are reminded the victims of the nazi's are victims their whole lives including in death. They seem dead even when living for there is no escape from the suffering they incurred to find a life worth living. Thanks for the wonderful story also including the young children trying to find peace in their father's death at a young age. Your heart breaks for them searching for love.
I appreciate the way you tied it all together with the "history of love". This book was quite confusing read on a Kindle app for iPhone. There are different writers voices and I suspect that in the hard copy there is some way to tell which one is writing but on the Kindle app they all appear the same so it is totally confusing as to who it is who is speaking and from where and what time period.
I got pretty much confused and tired of trying to figure it out so I decided to quit half way. It might be much more interesting if one could keep things straight. I went into this book knowing absolutely nothing about its premise. All I knew was that it is highly regarded by many of my Goodreads friends. What you should know is that right after I finished reading it, I spent the rest of the day rereading and underlining passages and clues I might have overlooked.
Did you find yourself doing the same thing after watching The Sixth Sense for the first time? This book is a compelling, heartwarming study of loneliness, loss and adolescence. At least ten to fifteen characters are inadvertently drawn together by a book published soon after World War II called The History of Love. The mystery behind its author and publication, and the different lives it touches up to present day unfold in a series of personal journal entries. Not enough to cry, but enough to remind me that I am human, and that we all have personal circumstances that we're struggling to overcome.
Sometimes one good day in a gloomy month is so precious that we dread the setting of the sun. The more I think about it, the more questions I have. Love is such a complex thing, whether it's fufilled, reciprocated, or never comes to fruition That is pretty powerful, and Krauss did a magnificent job of relaying that message.
