Feb 22, Kay M rated it it was ok Shelves: But for some strange reason I just couldn't get into it and I found it a struggle in the end. I admit what drew me in was the blurb as it sounded interesting and when I got around to finally reading it I was slightly disappointed. There was nothing wrong with the narrative style or the characters. From what I read the premises seemed well written; there was plenty of mystery and action and Alex and Mallory were believable I liked Alex a bit more as he seemed to have had a dark past and because he's an assassin.
However it didn't hold my interest like I hoped it would. So I decided to take a break from reading this to read another book. I thought I was going through a dry spell and I hoped when I did come back to this book that I will start to enjoy it while making progress. To be honest I was debating whether or not I should make it to the halfway point, yet at the same time I couldn't bring myself to force myself to read anymore. I'm sure Toni Anderson is a great writer and I certainly respect her talent. Having said that, I don't think her books are my cup of my tea.
Don't let my review discourage you; if you like this book then fair enough.
Cold Dark Place is an EP by American metal band Mastodon. It was released digitally and on CD on September 22, via Reprise Records, and a. The new Mastodon EP is an eclectic, psychedelic journey that sees guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds picking up a Sho-Bud string pedal steel guitar. Mastodon’s new EP, Cold Dark Place, is primarily sourced from a single tormented soul: Brent Hinds, the band’s fleet-fingered.
She is a newer author for me and I am really enjoying the journey. I'm excited to start the next book because the last series I loved the second book even more than the first. If you love romantic suspense, then I would dive in with me. Read the rest of this Goodreads review here: Jul 10, MuchAdo rated it it was ok. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. This is a book that has an interesting and harrowing premise, but the way it is handled bangles it really, a senator's daughter and the police did not search the whole grounds in Colby, particularly the woods abutting the senator's property?
No thorough questioning of the neighbours? I could have done a better job and without all that technology at my disposal. It also has two characters who could have been stella Yet another book where a writer's fan club skews the ratings. It also has two characters who could have been stellar, but they are not. We get details about their lives but put together those details do not make a whole. What spoils the book further is the terribly confused moral reasoning. It wants to be a reflection on the clash between principles and ideals of justice and the practices that bring it about.
But instead of being that, it is a mish mash of confused platitudes about 'right' and 'wrong'. As a general rule, writers need a 'spectacular show down' for their finale, and that is where the worst crimes against common sense, against mere believability are committed. In this case, Mallory the heroine , who's been rather free of idiotic-jumping-into-conclusions up to a few chapters before the end, decides that her self-defence training and a gun are enough to protect her from a very dangerous and determined serial killer, who has come very close to abducting and killing her on several occasions, and she knows it!
She suddenly decides she can do without the man who has provided effective protection to her on numerous occasions and she takes him out of circulation! Suddenly, she wants to be alone to clear her head, to think things over, and, crucially, catch the serial killer by herself!!!
Why is this woman suddenly convinced she does not need the help of the man who stood between the killer and herself? Especially at a time when she feels an emotional wreck.
This last portion of the book ruined the whole book for me early on something happened, the letting of air out of her tyres, only days after she had two masked men breaking into her house, yet she dismisses the incident as a colleague's spiteful behaviour! That stupid attitude did take me out of the story for a while , and it showed that Anderson had no clue as to how to end her book, falling back in the tried and trusted path of turning the heroine into a mind-numbing idiot. There are also other unacceptably silly elements exploding like megaton bombs of stupid at the end of this story.
Unbelievable, ridiculous and risible beyond belief. This could have been a book the Anderson fan club could have justifiably been proud of but it is not. Jun 26, Diane rated it really liked it. A bit hotter or steamier than I like in a book, but the storyline was good. Hunting down a serial killer is always my favourite type of book. Lots of characters to sort out at the beginning, and a few twists and turns and even a red herring just to mix things up, plus a couple of TSTL scenarios.
Overall the book was a decent read and likeable main characters regardless of their shady pasts! Jan 20, Shelby rated it it was amazing.
Really liked this book. The thriller and suspense were just enough though I had a few things figured out it still held surprises. I will definitely be reading more by this author. A Cold Dark Place 4. Following her most recent case, Mallory begins to suspect that a vigilante is at work disposing of pedophiles and serial killers. As she investigates, the powers behind the vigilante order former CIA assassin and current security expert, Alex Parker to keep an eye on Mallory. However, the secrets that Alex keeps begin to take their toll, especially once a deranged killer sets his sights on Mallory, and Alex may be forced to reveal his identity in order to save her.
A gripping serial killer plot with intriguing characters and an engaging romance. The suspense plot is well-developed with several spine-tingling twists that culminate in an exciting climax. The moral ambiguity surrounding the theme of vigilante justice adds another layer of intensity to the story and the characterization as nothing is as it seems. Nevertheless, the resolution to this thread is a bit too easy for my tastes.
The keeping secrets trope is usually a huge turn off for me, but it is exceedingly well done in this case. Mallory is an intelligent and resilient heroine coping to the best of her ability with an awful childhood trauma. She thankfully manages to avoid the TSTL trap for the majority of the book, and her one misstep is understandable given the circumstances.
All in all, a fast paced read with an excellent mix of romance and suspense. Looking forward to continuing with the series very soon. View all 5 comments. The narrator was a tad weird when doing the female parts. I kept hearing Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie lol. After getting past that, I quickly fell into the mystery and loved Alex.
Mallory was a tough chic but I really like how she lowered her shield for Alex While the romance isn't front and center it was still a good love story. I really thought being in the mind of the killer was portrayed almost scarily realistic. Great lead up to climax and sweet ending. I only wish there was an epil Audio book.. I only wish there was an epilogue.

These hetrosexuals meet when their work brings them together. They put their heads and bodies together as they solve some crimes and fall in love with each other. A Cold Dark Place is a crime thriller with some romance thrown into the story.
I found the plot of A Cold Dark Place to be okay although not exactly original. Have one charac Serial killer time yet again in America. Have one character who used to work for the CIA and you can assume some dodgy underhand dealings. Alex Parker is your typical flashy glamourous male, another loud mouthed American. He has little respect for the law and his morals are shady. Mallory Rooney is a highly attractive woman who went against her parents wishes to work for the FBI. I did not relate to either of these two lead characters. Oh and the romance blossomed between them which resulted in lots of vanilla sex which became a bore to read.
Okay, people all over the world become attached to their digital devices. However, wherever Alex or Mallory went, they always had their laptop computers with them. These laptop computers were so integral with their lives and the plot, every movement involved them picking up their laptop computer before walking away. This became tiresome during A Cold Dark Place because nearly every scene involved picking up a laptop computer before Alex or Mallory did anything.
Nose running, pick up a laptop computer before blowing on a tissue - only joking but you get my point. Thankfully in the heat of passion, Alex did NOT splash his laptop computer screen with semen! I did however enjoy the rivalry between police departments and the hunt for the officer involved who was leaking information. Although towards the end the action became quite comic strip in nature, I really liked the final telephone call and felt that conversation could so very easily happen in real life.
Would I bother with the other books in the Cold Justice series? No thank you, I was happy to dip my toe into the series but there are other series in the crowded Kindle Store that I think will be more rewarding for me. A Cold Dark Place for me was simply an okay 3 star read.
Oct 19, John W. The story is a example of great both good bad characters, mystery and manipulation, intrigue, and excellent story development. Readers come to embrace key characters and support characters. Anderson leaves nothing to chance as she takes her readers by their hands walks up to Agent Mallory Roony. She gives her readers unexpected surprises until there are no more pages to read. She develops her characters and as her story progresses.
The Gateway group take the law into their hands delivering a vigilante justice.
Roony uncovers existence of the group and Gateway know Roony is investigating. These twists and turns to the story add an interesting dimension to the connection between Mallory Roony and Alex Parker. Agent Mallory Roony and Alex Parker are on a collusion course towards each other. The well-developed support characters enter the story line as Anderson needs them.
Anderson keeps the story moving giving characters the ability to involve readers, keeping them moving through the story all the way to the end. When they turn the last page, she releases her hold on them. It is a heart stopper full of suspense and gives readers who are romantics at heart a spine-tingling ending. I recommend and give a 5 star ranking. Oct 06, Lisa rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is my first Toni Anderson, so obviously I wasn't sure what to expected.
Very excited to read the next in this series. I loved the idea of a government sanctioned killer Alex and Malllory had great chemistry from the start and I enjoyed how their relationship developed. Very enjoyable book and would recommend. Her job affords her acces to information on cases with similar signatures. When a case is unexpectedly resolved by an anonymous phonecall and a dead suspect, some chilling clues are starting to come together.
They may have a vigilante on their hands. It was a trade, his freedom for a http: It was a trade, his freedom for a contract with The Gateway Project. It had been part of his job. Now it would BE his job, for an underground government organization looking to mete out quick and sure justice to the worst scum of the earth, before mistakes and bureaucracy could mess it up. He never enjoyed what he did, but didn't question it Both Mallory and Alex fought against their attraction, both with very good reason, but the feeling was too unique, too special to pass up on. Mallory rather blissfully unaware of Alex' troubled conscience, is finding more evidence to suggest a vigilante has been active for a while.
The closer she gets, the harder the lies become for Alex. When the case of a serial killer is showing some eerie connections to the abduction of Mallory's sister, Alex takes the opportunity to stay as close as he can to make sure Mallory stays safe. He will do whatever it takes, even confess all if it means saving her life I can't help it Angst, passion, brutality, justice, intelligence, Karma, conspiracy, beauty, betrayal and the many forms of love.
I could live on books like these Both characters in this book have been shaped by their past. They both are where they are in life, because of an identifiable traumatic experience that shaped every decision that followed. For Mallory, those decisions started at a young age, when her twin sister was abducted never to be heard from again.
An event that had such an impact on her life and the remaining people in it, it shifted her entire future on its axis. The ultimate goal in every move Mallory has made was to find and bring to justice, the man who took her other half and left her heart empty. The loss of brothers in arms was the pivotal point for Alex. Due to his training and work as a government ordered executioner, he was accomplished at what he did, but did not like killing.
Whatever little heart he may have had left, had surely shriveled and dried to dust by now. One standing clear in the open with a firm belief in black and white - the other living in a perpetual state of gray, tucked in the shadows. Their chemistry is too overwhelming to resist and when they are together there is nothing but honesty in their hearts. The intricate plot is amazing!! Looping back on itself in a way that surprises right up to the end. Phenomenal both as a romantic story, as well as a thriller, together AND apart. Anderson's writing style is smooth, highly intelligent and knowledgeable, mature and intuitive and when appropriate, deliciously explicit!!
The best of Toni Anderson yet THAT promises a whole lot of fantastic reading pleasure in our future!! This one wasn't what I expected as I went in. I expected a straight forward RS book. The twist came in Alex and what his job was.
That really brought about some murkiness to things and I really hoped that his attraction to Mallory wasn't part of that murkiness. Mallory's past played a big part of the story and made a big impact on her life. I hated all the ways that Mallory was manipulated, there wasn't a person didn't have there fingers pushing at her.
While I liked the hunt for the bad guy, was This one wasn't what I expected as I went in. While I liked the hunt for the bad guy, was glad that he was caught, but what really made the book was how all the secrets came out at the end. How the one innocent person took control and made demands at people who's actions were iffy. His barked out statements were right on and a long time coming. Nov 09, Reen rated it it was amazing Shelves: This was my first book by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The book presents justice from two fronts, through the eyes of an FBI agent and also through the eyes of a government un sanctioned assassin. Mallory and Alex have complex pasts with lots of baggage and fall into a steamy relationship while tracking a serial killer. Interesting characters and a great dark suspense!

The two meet and risk everything when they fall in love……awe….
And I think with 'Once More 'Round The Sun' , we had, like, 15, 16 songs, and we're, like… Anything over an hour or… 52 minutes is, like, our cutoff time with records; we don't wanna make records any longer than that. So what we thought was these songs, they kind of sound like they belong together; they don't exactly sound like they'd go on 'Once More 'Round The Sun'.
We wanted to knd of… We didn't wanna rush it. So [we said], 'Let's just wait. And we'll put those out at a later time. And I'm glad we didn't put it on that record, 'cause that record's great — it's great the way it is. I mean, it could have maybe been better with that song on it, but it's cool to take that song and add it to the 'Cold Dark Place' EP. I was, like, 'I don't know.
I think it sounds awesome. Maybe we'll take that one off and put it as a single later. Maybe we'll add it to the other songs, remix 'em and put out 'Cold Dark Place'.
