I read this book to the class of second graders when I did my Rotary duty for RIFReading is Fun damental and my assistant said she needed the book for her boysso I found this oneusedthe price was right and the delivery was quick! Delightful to look at, delightful to hold, but when I read the blurb, We had to mark it "Sold"!
WE grew up with Grimm's fairy tales and other things we though were benign, but seeing them remade into movies and different venues, they weren't so innocent, were they? Can't go wrong with these books..
The main message is "Be careful with wishes. They might come true. This version of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale is placed in Aztec culture, where a fisherman comes across a sea turtle that announces himself to be "one of the seven sons of Opochtli, god of the sea. All is good until he arrives home, where his wife first chastises him and then sends him back to demand a bigger wish.
She asks to be king so she can be powerful. After the turtle grants her wish, the man finds his wife seated on a throne, wearing gold. Yet, she is still unhappy! She commands her husband to tell the turtle that she wants to be one of the gods. Even though her husband believes that the turtle cannot make her a god, he returns to the sea to ask the turtle. When he returns home, he asks his wife if she feels happy. She cannot answer because she is a statue carved from stone, just like the other gods.
The Fisherman and the Turtle is a fairy tale. In the story, the turtle grants the wife many wishes. This is magical because humans and animals cannot grant wishes. This book can be read aloud to a child who cannot read yet.
At this age, parents should be teaching their children that they should be thankful for great opportunities that come their way. This book demonstrates why people should not be greedy.
