But it got darker, and then it got darker still, meaning that by the end things were pretty sinister. There was some explanation in the text, but as you can imagine, if ballet moves had been explained every time they happened then the page count would probably be double! As I soon concluded her newest offering, Black Adagio, I couldn't wait to share my emotions about this well designed, terrifically paced novel of classical ballet and the true horrors every aspiring ballerina beholds, as she goes throught the rigors of acing her space in the world of becoming a professional in a world known company. Potocki takes it one step further out of the box with Black Adagio. Being a former ballet student myself, I understand and embrace the passion that definitely drove her to write this novel.
Not withstanding, I'm also pumped how she drops horror, the paranormal, coupled with a side of distinct human nature that will move you. It's almost like she's writing the book from personal experience, excepting the demons that possess the lead character, Melissa Solange. Perhaps it's the demons from within driving her, but since I never read and tell, I will only convey from personal experience, we all have demons driving us to another dimension.
I heartily recommend this awesome story of strife and struggle, and bending yourself around one's past to achieve your passion, whatever it may be.
I was sad when it ended. And I'm so happy to have read this engaging story.
Oh, and by the way, if you don't understand some of the ballet terms, Ms. Potocki has included all the descriptions of each ballet move at the back of the book. Just don't read the ending in advance, though, because you may get visited from a dark force. I'm totally positive you don't want to meet that ; Sep 01, Ninosha rated it it was ok. I didn't find this scary. It was long and boring until the last few chapters.
I would have stopped reading it but I was too confused as to what in the world was really going on?. Yes, the story has supernatural elements. That was pretty cool. I totally didn't expect the explanation for the ending, here I'm talking about the killer and their motivations. I'm not surprised that it ended the way it did though where Missy was concerned.
On another note, I didn't really like Missy. I couldn't relate I didn't find this scary. I couldn't relate to her character. I just couldn't like her. I enjoyed her sass though when it was dished out at Zoe, and Brandi too. But I did feel like some of her angst was completely irrelevant and misdirected. This book wasn't what I was expecting. It was creepy in some parts and the author tries to keep you guessing till the end, but the passive style of the story and the lead character fell a bit flat for me.
I guess this one wasn't for me. So, while I may not know a whole lot about dance, I found myself hooked by this dark supernatural tale about a sinister force lurking at Holybrook. There were a few grammatical things from time to time, but I was so engrossed in the story, they didn't phase me much at all. Those things are minor compared to a story with subtle dark forces and a plot that made me want to stay up long hours.
It reminded me a little of Black Swan, but not too much. I also felt a little of the menacing element of Phantom of the Opera lurking and that just made my heart happy. Creepy story, beautifully written prose, especially as the book began. You felt for the character and understood this was a make or break moment for her. The description of the seasons made me smile and I think I fell in love with the story right then. Apr 03, Kim rated it it was amazing.
