I have only begun reading the book very recently, but I am enjoying it so far. The story follows Jade who is half human and half mermaid. Her mother has been gone for a long time, while on her journey to transform back to a human. Jade and her father have gotten very worried and are desperate enough to plan a journey across the ocean in the search of Jade's mother.
Unfortunately I am not really liking how rushed to character development feels.
Like how Jade's relationship with her father is only I have only begun reading the book very recently, but I am enjoying it so far. Like how Jade's relationship with her father is only mentioned once or twice. I would recommend this book to people who are looking for an adventure with quite a bit of teenage drama.
Feb 12, J. Cute and fun like the first book but I am not a fan of the 14 year old dating situations Too young in my opinion. I really wish I could find some books for girls with strong positive female characters that do not include romance. Nov 15, Winter rated it it was amazing. Sometimes I loved reading the sum-ups and catching up Unless it was Sweet Valley or the BSC , and then it just got redundant , and this aspect was like a throw-back. Jade hasn't seen her crush Luke since the night he kissed her at the pool party, and it's been a month.
Sure, he's been away at camp, but he got back on Sunday and he still hasn't so much as texted her. What's a girl to do? On top of that, after believing that her mother drowned, only to find out she was a mermaid being held prisoner below the sea, Jade and her father must try to find her before it's too late.
The tidal pool where she's currently residing, however, is about to be filled in as the area is bulldozed for a mall expansion project. Jade has to figure out a way to stop the construction--and fast--or else she won't have a chance to reunite with her mother, this time for good. There's so much more going on in this book. The first book introduced readers to Jade and suffered with her as she learned about growing up and becoming a girl.
That was all, in a sense, world-building, because the world of Real Mermaids flourishes and expands in the second book. There was a surprise toward the end of book one that creates new interesting situations in book two, and we learn more about life under the sea, which makes this book fun for all mer-fans. This book is also more environmentally conscious, creating a sub-plot designed to make young readers think. Overall, this book is just as sweet and fun as the first, a perfect "growing up" book for tweens. Jul 12, Susan rated it really liked it Shelves: Real Mermaids Don't Hold Their Breath is an extremely fun and quirky summer read that anyone is sure to enjoy.

Helene Boudreau has penned an incredibly charming and delightful story with stunning imagery that sparks to life vividly and sparkles as beautifully as the deep blue ocean waters on a warm summer day. Jade is such a loveable character in so many fantastic ways. She's practical and shows some amazing character growth, while also still being a typical teenager at heart that reader's will be able to connect with easily.
Even though it may appear that she's going crazy in her head with all of the things that life has thrown at her, she still remains as calm as she can on the outside, which shows her as a more mature and determined young woman. She's just this wonderful ball of quirkiness wrapped in wonderfully written teenage complexities and insecurities that makes her incredibly relatable.
What teenage girl wouldn't absolutely fall in love with this character?! The romance is sweet and charming, the action and suspenseful mystery is entertaining, and the writing is so fun and light that reader's will be captivated from beginning to end. The story that Helene Bourdeau tells in this second installment of the Real Mermaids series sparkles with vibrancy and takes on a life of its own beckoning anyone who enjoys re-living their young and awkwardness with figuring out boys to sit down and read it. Jade was still an awesome and true to life kind of character, but I really feel like she grew in this one, maybe matured? I really liked reading through her point of view, because her sense of humor is absolutely to die for and her inner monologue is absolutely awesome. It's like reading a commentary to a real life event, which was cool. I think that my only real problem with Real Mermaids Don't Hold Their Breath is that it's just a tad bit too action-packed. Don't get me wrong, I love action! But honestly, so many different things were happening in the plot at one time, and so many things that really shouldn't have happened kept happening I'd just better leave it at that.
BUT the adding and adding to the plot was absolutely ridiculous! Apr 28, Z rated it it was ok. It hooked me in from the very beginning and I was captivated. Being about mermaids, and other mystical creatures under the sea helped hook me in even more. The plot was different and the same as other stories. I feel like it has the same storyline as other stories only this one has mermaids in it.
Overall, I was pleased with the book, just not enchanted by it. Jade has recently discovered that she is a mermaid.

The Mermish Council worries that Jade will tell their secret, so they are after her. I recommend this book to little girls, starting in middle school. I don't think boys will enjoy this because its about mermaids, best friends, and new boyfriends.
I feel like the author tried to delve into different genres, but only managed to get brief glimpses of each one. Its a cute book, that will warm your heart for a quick second, but then forget about next week. So if you're interested in an okay book, this is definitely one to read. Feb 15, Romancing the Book rated it really liked it Shelves: I feel compelled to read anything that has a storyline with mermaids.
I did not realize till I was almost half way through the novel that this was actually the second novel in the series. The storyline was fun and different. Jade is a mermaid that is able to change quite easily from human to mermaid. Her crush Luke has a little more difficulty doing so. She is in mermaid form.
It definitely did not read like a typical YA novel. I want to love them, I really do. However, this time I was pleasantly surprised in how much I enjoyed reading the book. The characters are exactly how I like my characters to be- smart, quirky and sassy.

The author truly knows how to weave a realistic fantasy! Dec 17, Nathan Miller rated it really liked it. This book was just as cute as the first one. It picks up a month or two later. Jade has some new problems, as one might expect both from someone who's still dealing with the turmoil of just having discovered she'd half mermaid, as well as the typical things a typical year-old girl faces.
The story resolves a couple of unfinished things from the previous work--namely her mermaid mother regaining human form, Jade's secret mermaid identity, and her proto-boyfriend--and raises some new ones. Whil This book was just as cute as the first one. The main character Jade is still doing that precarious balancing act between grown up and still not quite. I found the back-cover thirty-second pitch to be a bit off from the actual content, the latter of which was far more interesting.
I thought the first one held my attention a little better, though that could have been because I listened to it as an audiobook and mostly all at once, versus reading in minute snippets every day.
I still wound up matching the mental voice to the one from the audiobook. There's a third installment due out in February and I'll probably read that, too. Feb 11, Lenni Jones rated it really liked it. I liked this book. I knew I would from the moment I started it. Wait, that's not true. I knew I would like it since I read the first book. I love books that I can relate to, and this is one of them. Except for that mermaid thing. As far as I know, I have no mermaid blood in me. But still, I could relate to the realistic things and I'm happy i get to read these books.
A nice book, can't wait to read the next one! May 01, LaQuita rated it really liked it. This book was super cute and any pre-teen and teenage girl would love it.
This is the second book of the series and for someone reading this for the first time without reading the first book would certainly fall into it without getting lost. It's pretty simple, Jade is a teen mermaid with boy problems, what girl wouldn't relate to that. I found the storyline realistic other then the fact that she was a mermaid and definitely a page turner. The fact that there is more to this story then just her This book was super cute and any pre-teen and teenage girl would love it.
The fact that there is more to this story then just her liking a boy and figuring him out was really good and the descriptions were great. I loved how real the town she lived in felt and how I could picture what the ice cream shop she worked in looked like, it's stories like this that get you drawn in and leave you wanting more. I found myself giggling and remembering times when I was a teen. People who like cute mermaid books.
When I brought this book home from the library, I didn't realize it was the second book in the series until I looked it up on Goodreads. But then I started reading it and I understood it pretty good. I thought it was really cute and had a pretty good plot line. It was a short and easy read. I liked all the characters and thought that Luke and Jade were really cute.
I thought Cori was a really great best friend and really funny. But one thing I didn't like was sometimes the book would move to fast. Other than that, the plot was really good.
The Dead are following. But it may be long ere we sit, you and I, at the high table in Meduseld; there will be no time for feasting when I return thither. Merry wondered how many Riders there were. There goes the trumpet for the closing of the Gate. Two hundreds, what are they? Then you have not yet eaten today?
If you're looking for a short and cute read, then this is the book for you. I will have to go and find the first book and the next few ones. This is a pretty good series so far. Hope you enjoy it. Her dad remains reassuringly dad-like, I loved the Merlin storyline. Helene Boudreau has expanded on the mermaid mythology, introducing us to more characters and the mermaid council.
This book has more big issues while the first one was very much focused on Jade.
Mar 10, Jules Goud rated it it was ok Shelves: This reminds me a little bit of 'The Clique' series. Jade has some issues.
