My rating is 3. However, as I gradually turned the pages, I was completely surprised. The book not only picked up momentum, but also touched my heart. This is one book that became better and better with every page. I was slightly sad as the book ended because by that time, I formed a kind of connection with Ananya. The language and narration of the book is beautiful. There were a few editing errors, which can be overlooked. I just wish that the first part of the book was a little more interesting.
However,being a woman, the journey of Ananya touched the innermost chords of my heart.
I could feel her agony, her loss and her triumph. A very heart touching book which deals with a sensitive subject! Recommended especially to teenage girls and women in their twenties. I have half-read the next novel, the writer has kept he same creative visualization in the second novel too, and a lot of learning about Stock Market and Mutual funds is an addon!
And the icing to the cake is the seemingly real female character, struggling for her space, is worth experiencing. For a debut effort, a great one by Shilpa Gupta. Simple and elegant narrative, and therefore eminently readable. As Ananya wades through her travails you are left empathising with a wide range of her emotions, pausing to think what you might do in her place, and realising perhaps not much better and possibly much worse! The story brings a lump in the throat at unexpected moments.
The author seems to have the gift to deliver subtle surprises without anything sensational happening. On the flip side, I agree with another reviewer Neal, that occasional disconnects in the storytelling could have been avoided with a bit of editing. I would be eager to see more from this writer. When I read this type of book I feel how simple, easy and privileged it is to be a white male. Hegarty's writing style is like listening to your old friend tell a story. It's a suitably humble style to an outstanding Australian. Finding herself pregnant at the age of seventeen, she learns that the world is a very different place once you are on its wrong side. The discovery of the fault lines in her parents relationship-which until then had seemed perfect to her-further breaks her.
Will Ananya be able to reverse the downward spiral that her life has plunged into and find meaning once again?
