Because Kathryn is proud, she completes the tasks her aunt asks of her, all the while planning her escape back to Toronto where she plans to study law and live a respectable life. However, as she learns more about the Metis people, Kathryn comes to understand their plight as a minority population without any legal rights in Canada.
The author has done her homework regarding the Metis' legal status at the time, and her details of daily life in the Metis community are impressive. However, the writing style of this novel was disappointing. The author frequently overwrites the narrative by telling the reader things she should be able to infer from the dialogue. So much of what she does and says is predictable. This is a story with potential but it needs a better edit to help make that happen.
Dec 27, Book Bite Reviews rated it it was ok Shelves: Well I bought this book because of the reference to Calgary and the town of Hope. There is such a place in Alberta.
The author is also from Bragg Creek Alberta and her name is Jacqueline, just like me: Admitingly though, I am not a fan of the Metis or any other Indian. In fact I am part Cree myself and not proud of that fact , but as I said this story takes place in Alberta It's about a girl who lost her parents and is sent from Toronto to Alberta to live with her Aunt who so hap Well I bought this book because of the reference to Calgary and the town of Hope.
It's about a girl who lost her parents and is sent from Toronto to Alberta to live with her Aunt who so happens to be Metis.
Anyway she dreams of being a lawyer and she prides herself in that knowledge as she helps solve the mystery of the Highwayman, and uncovers a murder. Jul 23, Vanessa rated it it was amazing. A dangerous mystery that kept me turning pages until the very end. I had no idea the hidden history part was real. It shocked me that this happened in Canada. I loved the shadowy Highwayman, a real Robin Hood character who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. I bet no one out there can guess who is the Highwayman! I couldn't and I'm a mystery master.
The humour made the book very enjoyable. Kathryn is a strong role model for young women everywhere. No one likes a whiner or a quit Super Book! No one likes a whiner or a quitter and Kathryn is neither. I was cheering for her all the way. Jun 01, Rachel Seigel rated it liked it. The mystery of who the Highwayman is adds an interesting dimension, but I felt like the book could have done more and it just slightly fell short.
