And to this day all the singing men and the singing women speak of Josiah in their lamentations. They made it a custom in Israel; and indeed they are written in the Laments. Nevertheless the Lord did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath, with which His anger was aroused against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him. Set up the standard toward Zion.

For I will bring disaster from the north, And great destruction. They will lay hold on bow and spear; They are cruel and have no mercy; Their voice roars like the sea; And they ride on horses, As men of war set in array against you, O daughter of Zion. They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers who refused to hear My words, and they have gone after other gods to serve them; the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant which I made with their fathers.

Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know,. For according to the number of your cities were your gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem you have set up altars to that shameful thing, altars to burn incense to Baal. Other specific sins he identified included idolatry Jeremiah Your children have forsaken Me And sworn by those that are not gods.

Shall I not punish them for these things? Everyone will deceive his neighbor, And will not speak the truth; They have taught their tongue to speak lies; They weary themselves to commit iniquity. Jeremiah announced that the effects of sin would be that God would withdraw His blessings For thus says the Lord: Both the great and the small shall die in this land.

They shall not be buried; neither shall men lament for them, cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them. Nor shall men break bread in mourning for them, to comfort them for the dead; nor shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or their mother. Also you shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and drink. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Or what is our iniquity?

Or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God? When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence. Cast them out of My sight, and let them go forth. I will hand them over to trouble, to all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth.

I will make this city desolate and a hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues. And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and in the desperation with which their enemies and those who seek their lives shall drive them to despair.

Jeremiah lived in Jerusalem through this terrible time, witnessing its siege and destruction at the hands of the Babylonians Now Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison. And he was there when Jerusalem was taken. In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem, and besieged it. God forbade Jeremiah from taking a wife during his ministry. For thus says the Lord: For even your brothers, the house of your father, Even they have dealt treacherously with you; Yes, they have called a multitude after you.

Do not believe them, Even though they speak smooth words to you. His persecution increased in Jerusalem when a priest named Pashhur sought out Jeremiah to have him beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin for a day Now Pashhur the son of Immer, the priest who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.

I am in derision daily; Everyone mocks me. For this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but their harm.

For the king can do nothing against you. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.

THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET JEREMIAH

For there is no more bread in the city. So they pulled Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the dungeon. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison. Yet Jeremiah knew he had to speak the message God had given him.

God told Jeremiah that if he would boldly speak His words and not shrink back in fear of the people, He would give him the strength he needed to withstand the persecution. The message God sent to the people via His prophet was that the people needed to return to God. Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit.

Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters—that you may be increased there, and not diminished. And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace. And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place.

Behold, I will bring it health and healing; I will heal them and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth. And I will cause the captives of Judah and the captives of Israel to return, and will rebuild those places as at the first. God reminds us that the opposite is also true: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Jeremiah : the fate of a prophet

I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive. In those days Judah will be saved, And Jerusalem will dwell safely. And this is the name by which she will be called:. Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving And the voice of those who make merry; I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.

Their children also shall be as before, And their congregation shall be established before Me; And I will punish all who oppress them.
