There are many accounts of life with Meher Baba in India, but this is one of the rare tales of what it was like for a Westerner with a job and a family to make God the main focus of his life. This is a coming-of-age story, but Lila is not the usual tattoo-laden, bitter babe, but rather a quite intelligent and optimistic gal.
The bulk of the story concerns her relationship with the caretaker on the property and their interesting and very chaste relationship, but there is another plot involving her mother and her thuggish boyfriend, Luther Henderson, who come looking for LIla.
Lila begins the novel thinking she's nothing but poor white trash but learns she is much, much more than that by the unexpected ending. Great story great narrator loved it!
