We loved the series, both my 9 year old son at the time and myself. A saga of summer school vacations in the country, bullies and how to deal with them, grandfatherly love and bonus a lot of magic adventures and how to build your courage. This is a verbal review from both a third and sixth grader who completed the book - as a disclaimer, I did not but then again a middle-aged gray-haired guy is not the target audience!
Bottom line summary is they both the 3rd and 6th grader loved this book, and they were both quite insistent on purchasing the Kindle-format sequel to the Golden Acorn.
When asked what they liked the most, the third grader said he liked the characters, time travel, and the story, which was about all I could get out of him. Both of them said they would recommend it to their friends, and three friends downloaded both the Golden Acorn and this sequel to their Kindles. Similar to the experiences with the Golden Acorn, after reading this book the sixth grader carried on a conversation of how neat it would be to have something like the golden acorn in real life, what she would do, etc.
What I really like is it appears to be a great story and having them want to read more and exercise their minds vs. I picked up the first book in the series Golden Acorn when it was free, and decided to get the sequel as well - just in case! I read the first book straight through and thought it was great, then immediately moved on to Glasruhen Gate, which I also read straight through. The author weaves modern-day life with Celtic history and folklore very well, and the fantasy is so matter-of-fact you almost don't even notice it.
Glasruhen Gate is a little more towards the 'fantasy' side than the Golden Acorn is - much of the action takes place in the Celtic Otherworld. There is also a more noticeable, but still subtle, undercurrent of - not moralizing, but maybe - life lessons in this book than there was in the Golden Acorn. This isn't to say that the book is preachy - it isn't at all - but Jack is shown issues like 'power corrupts' and 'be careful what you wish for'.

I am looking forward to Cooper's next Jack Brenin book. I only wish they were a little longer. I have been fascinated by this author since the first paragraph of the first book!!
Mysteries still not solved yet. This held my interest from the beginning. At the same time he is troubled by dreams about Velindur and has to cope with the local bullies. Catherine's love of history, myths and legends and the Shropshire countryside around where she lives shines through her charming stories. Are you sure you want to continue?
What a wonderful adventure to be on. It is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, various fairy tales from childhood and am just as caught-up as I was with the Harry Potter books. I recommend this to anyone with even a slight imagination. You will definitely enjoy these books. My son and I waited a long time for this book to come out. It is our favorite series to read.
