Lives of the Ancient Egyptians: Pharaohs, Queens, Courtiers and Commoners

The majority of the biographies are those of kings and queens, but a good number of relatively low-level commoners are included as well, evidence permitting. All in all, "The Lives of the Ancient Egyptians" is a vivid presentation of a wonderful stretch of history, from Narmer, the first pharaoh of the First Dynasty to Cleopatra VII and the fall of Egypt under Roman domination, looking at day-to-day life as well as great events.

The organization of the book, mostly biographies a few pages long, makes it ideal for browsing, dipping in for a quick read and then coming back to it days or weeks later which is not to say that it cannot or should not be read as a continuous kaleidoscope of Ancient Egyptian history. This volume immediately won a permanent spot on my over-crowded bookshelves.

It's a collection of very, very short biographies of real Egyptians navigating the world thousands of years ago. That makes it interesting, but also difficult at the same time.

It's hard to get much of a sense of the time, the place, and the person after only reading a few paragraphs. Very much a coffee table book, Wilkinson presents brief five-page-or-less biographies of notable individuals from across three thousand years of ancient Egyptian history. As you might expect from such truncated explorations, each portrait is only thinly sketched, and nowhere near the kind of detail you could expect from an academic work — but that is the point.

This is a very enjoyable summary of many ancient Egyptian VIPs ranging from prehistory to the Roman conquest. There's not a ton of detail, but this is great for introducing you to times and people that you may want to research more carefully.
