Fearless

A woman about to begin her maternity leave from work begins to suspect that her replacement is plotting to take over her life. Emma Banville, a human rights lawyer known for defending lost causes, sets out to prove the innocence of Kevin Russell, who was convicted for the murder of a school girl 14 years earlier.

Once you got past the awful title sequence and the usual, dull latter-day accompanying title song, this six-part contemporary political thriller made for entertaining watching. Centring on lost-cause defence solicitor Helen McCrory's Jane Banfield's penchant for taking on tough cases for what might seem on the face of it unsympathetic defendants, she apparently quite happily lets the client and indeed the family of her clients stay over at her place.

The main story here concerns the unsafe conviction of a young father for the murder 14 years ago of a 15 year old girl, mainly down to a confession forced out of him by an over-keen female police detective played by Wunmi Mosaku, who becomes one of the focal points for Banfield's later campaign for the man's release. There's a connected sub-plot too involving a young Syrian mother who is staying at Banfield's pending immigration clearance and whose absent husband is suspected of terrorist sympathies.

The stories take many a twist and turn as you'd imagine over six episodes, involving a female mysterious American "fixer" with her own reasons for keeping the convicted "murderer" in jail, a senior British Whitehall mandarin in on the cover-up and in particular a new, young rising-star Labour politician who they seem to be helping to the top of the so-called political greasy pole, for their own ends.

The fixer will stop at nothing to cover her tracks, including blackmail and attempted murder as she reports back to her ruthless U. Intelligence bosses and seems to keep one step of Banfield and her investigation until the latter's persistence pays off and the whole house of cards falls down in a dramatic conclusion outside the by-now new Labour leader's house.

Fearless, also known as Huo Yuanjia (霍元甲) in Chinese, and as Jet Li's Fearless in the United Kingdom and in the United States, is a Chinese- Hong. Peter Weir and Allen Daviau in Fearless () Benicio Del Toro and Rosie Perez in Fearless () Jeff Bridges in Fearless () Isabella Rossellini in.

While much of the story seemed to credit Banfield with detective instincts of which Sherlock Holmes would be proud, as well as the usual unbelievable coincidences and fantastic high-level connections, the action was fast-moving and carried forward by a fluid production acted out well by a mostly quality cast with Michael Gambon in particularly fine form as the oily, senior British link in the American chain of deception although quite what comedian John Bishop was doing as Banfield's "bit-of-rough" current boyfriend, I'm not quite sure but it didn't have much to do with acting skills.

It didn't look like there were markers laid down for future series featuring the Banfield character which would be a shame as her character is a strong one and one can easily imagine her returning a la "Prime Suspect's" Helen Mirren or "Happy Valley's" Sarah Lancashire, but be that as it may, this was superior small-screen drama well worth viewing.

However, Huo is able to handle the katana proficiently, while Tanaka fumbles with the sanjiegun. Huo offers to exchange weapons with Tanaka, and the first round ends in a draw. Before the next round, Huo unknowingly drinks tea poisoned by the members of the foreign chamber of commerce. In the second round involving unarmed combat, Huo has difficulty breathing and begins to lose his strength.

He collapses and starts coughing blood as a result of arsenic poisoning. Tanaka and Huo's supporters demand that the match be halted and postponed, but Huo wishes to continue as he is going to die anyway. Huo is overwhelmed by Tanaka but manages to deliver a final blow to Tanaka's chest, using the same technique that killed Qin. Tanaka, aware that he would have died had Huo used more force, declares Huo the victor as Huo dies. In the epilogue, Huo's spirit practices Wushu on a field while Yueci observes him.

Huo turns to her and smiles, indicating a lover's reconciliation. The film was originally approximately minutes long, but to fit market demand, it was cut to minutes, and scenes by Michelle Yeoh and a fight between Jet Li and a Thai boxer, portrayed by Somluck Kamsing , were removed. A special release of the film in Thailand in March reinserted the scenes with Somluck but not Michelle Yeoh , making its new running time approximately minutes.

Within the Somluck Kamsing scene, there are two different endings. In the director's cut, the fight ends after Huo Yuanjia stops the Thai boxer from falling head first. In an alternate scene, the Thai boxer continues to fight after this and Huo appears to kill him with the exterminating blow, only to see that he had resisted, in which the boxer realises this and ends the fight. However, many people were able to get replacement copies that had the director's cut after sending a complaint on their website.

In December , Universal released the Blu-ray version of the film, which contains the three versions Theatrical, Unrated, and Director's Cut in a single disc. Hero or Crouching Tiger it ain't. The film's soundtrack was composed by Shigeru Umebayashi.

Written by Reid Gagle. Other reviews I have read here do a great job of summarizing the plot and key elements of this film. I just want to reiterate, first, how incredible the cast is. Rather than fall prey to playing her role as an insensitive wife who doesn't understand the extraordinary passage her husband is undergoing, she is given the chance to really be a hero in her own right.

When it's clear she can no longer do that, she becomes a noble warrior to fight for her own sanity and that of her son. The procession of her character is flawless and every moment feels right. The interplay between Rossellini and Rosie Perez is played out with unexpected honesty, restraint and brilliance. Perez' Carla has her own parallel situation, with a husband who completely can't understand why she won't exploit the situation for all she can get in court a great early small performance from Benecio Del Torro. He is, like Rossellini, troubled by the bizarre and nonobvious intimacy that has developed between his wife and Jeff Bridges, two people whose lives might never have ordinarily crossed.

Perez is, as has been mentioned elsewhere here, devastating. Her grief over the loss of her son is sustained and utterly utterly credible. This brings us to Jeff Bridges.

Man, oh man, this is his career masterpiece performance--arguably the greatest leading acting role of the 's. I know from personal experience--mine was nothing like a plane crash--but the phenomenon that this movie ventures to explore that I just described, which may seem like mostly bizarre behavior shifts in Bridges' character to those who haven't experienced what I'm talking about--is in fact as real as love, fear, or passion itself. Others have mentioned the "why didn't this get bigger press" issue.

The studio was quite nervous that this was an art house movie and didn't promote it as heavily as they might have. Director Peter Weir himself considers this his greatest work and was greatly stung by what he considered the slight it was given by Hollywood and the public.

In many ways it has shaped a cynicism towards Hollywood he has had ever since, and it would be five years before he'd find it in himself to direct another film.
