Speranza messa in musica.
Folk Metal Anno July Reviewer Leo Provenance Olanda Pyaneta, the fifth and most recent work of MaterDea, comes from Italy with its characteristic sound that mixes symphonic, power and some folk metal. Its symphonic sound is well handled and their folk essence stands out in the lyrics and album theme, focused on the planet, nature, and life; a theme very typical of the folk music genre that we can see also in the cover art. The melodies style is consistent throughout the disc, what in some cases, could feel similar to other songs within the same album.
Over the years, symphonic metal has remained stagnant, allowing bands that have remained in the game to continue releasing albums while new, fledgling bands have to stand out by incorporating new elements in the tried-and-true method of operatic vocals and death growls. In the case of MaterDea, their fifth release Pyaneta does a little bit of both, eventually changing into something more cohesive and consistent. To start things off, I was not impressed with the first half of the album. MaterDea had, essentially, thrown a lot of things together to see what could stick, but failed to fully develop those ideas into something cohesive.
And that it did. Because of this, Pyaneta became enjoyable — at one point, I was tapping my foot in time to the beat. The music also becomes more emotional and ethereal, allowing for majestic, melodic introductions and vibrant tones that were missed on the first half.
The first half may not be great, but the second half makes up for those shortcomings. Obviously, this is an album that needs to be played several times in order to be enjoyed, but, once the listener has gotten over the first half, they will have a great time.
Materdea has, of course, the basic instruments like bass, drums, and guitars but adds two violin players and a cello player to the line-up. On their website is an eight member listed but I guess that somebody who helps out the band with lots of things. With eleven songs and a total playing time for over an hour, Pyaneta has for everybody something to like.
Symphonic may be their main ingredient but the band takes the right amount of folk to spice things up. Every song on Pyaneta holds something that surprised me, it could be the intro when the songs start or some melodies that are unexpected. It makes Pyaneta an interesting listen.
They hail from the north of Italy and mix the folky sound of Eluveitie with elements of symphonic metal. To make this striking combination reach maximum potential, the band has two violists and a cellist next to the regular string artists. Also the group uses both male and female vocals. This sounds so much better than the keyboard violinst that many other bands bring forward!
Sometimes the strings hold back in very standard support, and they should come forward just that bit more. The full potential of this large band is not yet used, and there is definitely some room for improvement there. The combination of two vocalists and classical instruments remind of the work of Victor Smolski such as Lingua Mortis Orchestra and Almanac. A disclaimer about the vocals not nearly reaching that level must be added here, and that is the primary weak spot of MaterDea.
Female vocalist Simon Papa can definitely sing, but her high and overly sweet voice is on a constant lullaby level, and also the limited vocals of Marco Strega miss any sort of balls.
Very unfortunate, because on an instrumental level, the band manages to strike the right chord on all their strings. Further ahead on the CD we encounter some very interesting songs. Is it enough to make a lasting impression after the CD kind of collapsed unto itself because of the tedious vocals? Not when the toe-curling last song abuses my eardrums with the most horrible guest? MaterDea has some fine ideas and there is definitely some potency in this group. Alas it is mainly the vocals that do not live up to the level of the rest of the group, and therefore hold back the general level of the whole thing.
I enjoyed the pretty music, but this is not an album that will get a prominent spot in the album collection.
Formed in , these Italian metallers have been pushing out excellent work in the folk scene.
What comes off a bit difficult at times is the sweet innocence in the vocals of Simon Papa mixed in with the heavier bits. The contrast is unique and some might find it tough to get used to. Honestly, it is a bit similar to classic acts like Falconer, so maybe it will not be too difficult to enjoy. The tracks are growing on me! I am superbly torn. The song progresses into some excellent speedy parts and offers a terrific guitar solo before finally floating back into an acoustic passage, before closing out in epic fashion.
The following track does exactly that! Great work here that must be heard, showcasing excellent transition from mellow to heavier while keeping great consistency. This is awesome; let us dig into the last few tracks to close out the album. Love the addition of these effects in a few of these tracks. Also, very refreshing to hear male vocals from Strega starting off this track. La bellezza di Pyaneta raggiunge vette straordinarie: It is interesting to me how many bands I have been reviewing and listening to that are out of Italy lately.
It appears there is quite a symphonic, Celtic and folk metal culture there that has been off my radar. That has certainly changed this year. MaterDea has been around since and this is their fifth studio album release, so they are veterans to the industry. It really shows in the quality of the production on the album, especially with so much going on in each song. You have female vocals predominantly, but also male vocals in support and even some children singing background vocals.
The amount of different instruments is quite amazing! We have guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, violins and cello. The band started when vocalist Simon Papa and guitarist Marco Strega collaborated on a Celtic soundtrack for a short movie. From there they started working on writing music and MaterDea was born.
The album starts with the track Back To Earth. This song starts with some eerie music and a dire message to the children of earth. The guitars explode in with keyboards in support. The music has a great feel to it. The guitars and keyboards playing off of each other quite well. She shows such a wide range of singing ability on this opening song. We also have some male vocal in support that fit perfectly into the song. This six-minute epic has just about everything a song can have. In fact almost all the songs on the album run five to seven minutes. We also get a great guitar solo in this song.
The chorus is very catch as well. It is a great way to start off the album. Neverland is another song that really stood out to me. Once again we have a bit of an eerie opening. This song is a little softer than Back To Earth. It gives Papa a chance to really showcase her voice. The music in the song, especially in the middle really delivers that Celtic vibe. I really love that a lot of metal is adding that Celtic sound to their albums. Once again another strong chorus really carries this song. The song actually feels quite lively overall.
Legacy Of The Woods is another favorite of mine. The song starts literally with the sounds of being in the woods. It is very relaxing. Papa starts in with her softer vocals and they draw you in to the song. The music is melodic and easy to listen to. Then the guitar starts to slowly build and the song jumps up several notches. Now more of a rock song, with a lot of keyboard to support it. Once again we also have male vocals that really add to the song before it fades back out to the sounds of the woods. Metamorphosis is another song that really kicks it up.
The song moves forward at a nice pace and is just mixed so perfectly between the vocals and all the instruments. It is another song to me that just feels good to listen to. It is almost what I would call easy listening metal. All the songs are so well done that the flow to them is just perfect. We get treated to another serious guitar solo in this song that I love. As we get to the conclusion of the song it feels like the song has really taken off. Overall this is a very good album. There is not a lot here that is new to this genre of music, but that is fine because it is so well done.
Every part of this album is perfectly executed. The musicians, production, mixing, it just all comes together to make a really good album that you will enjoy listening to for a long time to come. MaterDea is a well-known metal band in pagan and celtic scene. This new record is surely a step forward, forged in the personal style of MaterDea. It's a powerful symphony where all the instruments and vocals join the sounds of nature, painting new mighty pictures using different colors and complex arrangements. The melodies reveal themselves along with the sumptuous guitar riffs, a powerful rhythmic session and the twist of strings and orchestration, allowing the listener to be carried away in a dimension full of energy, beauty and hope by these magical tales.
Influenced by Genesis, Jethro Tull and Led Zeppelin, their sound is best summarised as neo-classical light power metal. Devised as strong, spiritual music, with fantastical elements, it succeeds in this colourful purpose. All 7 band members bring classical training to this vibrant sound. Released on 8th May in the UK.
Back To Earth — Whale song opens onto a sci-fi-esque, otherworldly narrative, gradually exploding into full pelt metal. Memorably powerful feminine vocals, much in the vein of Lacuna Coil, Nightwish and Delain. A notable fluidity encapsulates the track, holistically, as it ends on another voice-over, extolling love as an immediate and central panacea to all.
The Return Of The King — Ethereal beauty haunts this intro, incorporating a combo of light sounds, before evolving, once more, into powerful metal. Again, it just flows, so naturally. Vocally and instrumentally, it is one. Some very intriguing accompaniments in there. Great fast pace, gathering momentum, as it goes, eventually ending on a bestial whale cry, amongst the sound of breaking glass.
A quickened pace pushes it along, purposefully, as its power grows. More than ably assisted by those driven riffs. Ending on the Eastern vibe, to which it returns, a world of power infuses its sound, as that tight, determined drum hit closes it. Strength in spades and an individual touch, to go with it. Neverland — Opening with a flock of seagulls in the background of the sound of manual labour, planing off and soaring into vivid melody.
Palpable accompaniments and magical sounds interspersing it. Loaded with catchy rhythms and melodies, this is a standout track, for sure. Celtic sounds follow, before and surrounding the feminine, lighter vocals. Heavily melodic, with a lyrically narrative style. Combining light and shade, soft and heavy, as the powered accompaniments flow in and out and around the vocals. The Legend Of The Pale Mountains — Opening onto an aural scene of mediaeval forests and lakes, complete with violin and accordion, to accompany it. The electrifying riffs hit at that point.
Gentle, feminine vocals join them there, telling their story, till the full on instrumentals take over, on and off. Heightening the power and heaviosity, it races along on a thread of metal gold. Seeming to blend in with the feminine ones, at certain points, the masculine aspect does gain in strength, though still interweaves with the feminine. Lots of soaring tones in here, picking up more power, as they go. Definitely a greater mystique to this, generally. Metamorphosis — Sounds of tinkling chimes and a short voice-over, before the instantly involved vocals come into play. More than competently supported by big instrumentals and an air of affecting passion and power.
Bourre del Diavolo — Wolves howling at the outset, the pumped up accompaniments get straight in there, with a real Celtic flavour and a hurried tone and rhythm. Sharp, affected male vocals narrate their story, in another language, complete with evil laughter. Narrating a wonderfully fantastical tale, with all the skills and passion inherent within it.
A metallic, mythological storyboard, combining old and new world wonder is the closest summation of this standout album. A definite example of all killer, no filler, with mysterious touches, accentuating the metal.
Ascoltiamo subito queste nuove 11 tracce!
Arrivando poi a "Running all Night with the Wind" che mi riporta indietro all'unica e sola lirica dei MaterDea. Female fronted folk metal band with both keyboards and a violin.
The songs on A Rose for Egeria are often epic and very beautiful. The bands vocalist has a beautiful and rather thin voice and the interplay between the caressing female lines and some of the groovier guitar riffs is very well done. It's not overplayed, so when it does get used it adds flavor rather than coming off as a dull and overused gimmick. A Rose of Egeria is eleven tracks of well written and properly thought out symphonic folk metal, the kind of thing that restores my faith in the genre.
Part of the appeal of Materdea for me is the way that they manage to craft some really excellent melodic lines, seemingly out of thin air. For example, their is no real precedent for the introductory keyboard line in An Unexpected Guest but it is immediately recognizable and extremely memorable. There are also some very weird and strangely fascinating moments.
Perhaps the most bizarre is Land Of Wonder which features the voice of a fairy, strange, but well developed. Materdea bill themselves as Elvish Metal and given the rather otherworldly magical feel of these songs, I can't think of a better label. So Materdea have managed to rise up, masters of a genre that has often been called overcrowded. Their unique niche is one that many bands have tried to work their ways into, but none have succeeded.
These Italians are only going up, they are one of the most exciting pagan metal acts on the scene. With over 5, facebook likes already they are clearly pretty huge on their local circuit. As their songwriting gets even better How they could do that I'm not sure I am sure they could very easily become a massive internationally touring name.
The band were formed in and released their third album entitled 'A Rose For Egeria' in February BEYOND THE PAINTING - A slight Gothic sounding intro with an ancient feel and a deep choir as the band gradually creeps upon you then roars into life with gusto with a slight symphonic edge before Simon's powerful and almost angelic sounding vocals backed with strong orchestration come into play and immediately draws you into the story.
The lyrics suit the title perfectly, "she will drag you and pull you inside" and that's exactly what it does as the music swirls around you with a great catchy melodic chorus, a good use of light and shade with a dark heavy feel at times that compliments the main lighter theme of the track as it drives along. A well crafted song with good arrangements to get your taste buds going. Simon's vocals entice you further into the song which has pagan feel with an added symphonic edge that holds you in its embrace as we journey through a busy fantasy land.
Excellent violin playing from Elisabetta whist the keyboards add to the texture of the song perfectly as it rocks along with steady guitar riffs and percussion holding it all together in this pleasant rocker that does not fail to get you headbanging. WHISPERS OF THE GREAT MOTHER - A gentle piano that is smooth and relaxing leads us into a mellow start with lovely strings and a great Celtic pagan feel to the song as we are taken back into a time of long ago and you are put at ease as the track gently washes over you, then without warning your peace is shattered as you are hit with a more heavier style that gets you in its grasp and leads you further into a pagan wonderland which has hidden shadows in places.
As you carry on with your journey it throws up images and feelings of old gods and rituals and ancient forests with satyrs and other beings from folklore before we reach the journeys end. The strings tug at your heart and are very prominent here as the story unfolds and throws out lots of feeling and images that keep you involved and maintaining the theme of ancient times. Added male vocals give an extra dimention to the track as you can almost visualize the unicorn being in danger from a lurking dark force.
A very dramatic and emotional journey here complete with a great powerful chorus. A very well crafted song that is immensely enjoyable with lots of hidden delights. Pleasant female vocals hold their hand out and try and keep you safe as we are taken into the song with its great strong catchy chorus that is very uplifting in a track that has a hidden, underlying dark tinge of menace.
The strings once again weave their beautiful sound alongside the driving drum beat and a very good guitar solo, we are enjoying a very pleasant setting here before it changes as Elena's vocals suddenly take a more darker tone and grey clouds begin to form as we enter a more unearthly realm for a brief period, then the grey clouds are driven back by the power of the chorus. A song once again full of different textures and packed full of emotion and drama that enthralls as you take this wonderful journey.
This is another great piece of storytelling that instantly involves you throughout. A track that has almost everything from its wonderful female vocals, to its harmonious chorus with a great Celtic and pagan feel that is maintained as the guitars grind out their licks and the arrangements are majestic and full of pomp as the song keeps its old world and mysticism alive as it twists and turns casting its story over and around you, holding you like a magnet in its embrace. Wonderful escapism into the world of ancient gods and heroes, the band are on top form as they weave their way through the number creating and painting a picture on a canvas.
Again the style is of an ancient land with green hills and pastures that have hidden secrets to discover, the chorus is catchy and enlightening as the drums keep the track speeding along with very good arrangements interspersed throughout the number, a soaring track with a great feel and nice textures that are well arranged to tell it's story. Wondrous female vocals again tell the story clearly and are full of drama and emotion as the number takes hold and develops its picture of fair maidens and old villages but with a modern twist that has you believing that you are actually there in the story.
I'm sure this track would go down a storm when played live. Lots to find here with the perfectly balanced vocals keeping you entranced in the story and maintaining that Celtic folk edged style to the sound. The violin playing is very prominent and adds to the quality and texture of the song. Once again the arrangements are perfectly put together as the track twists and turns holding your attention as we reach the end of the journey with the sound of a slow cantering horse and a sad sounding violin. This is truly a wonderful album that should please anyone who's into Female Fronted Metal, a great addition to the genre.
Hard driving rhythms layered with symphonic elements along with provocative, mystickal vocals make this cd a must have for any Pagan. The depth and roundness of sound makes it seem as if you are in a concert hall listening to them perform. Singers who rely on Autotune should listen to this to hear how it should be done.
What sets this band apart is the beautiful violin, audible in this song. The double bass drum rhythms as the music picks up set up a good feel, and the vocals are well-crafted and harmonized exquisitely. The power this band has is unbelieveable. The interplay between the instruments and vocals was a treat for the ears.
This song does give the feeling of running through the night.
It's a sign of good songwriting when you can sing or hum a melody after only hearing it once. The dynamics between the songs and within each song makes this one of the ultimate cds which should be in everyone's collection. One that you will want to listen to until you know every single note and word of every song.
They are not symphonic in vocal style, but in the strong strings elements.
The album has been mastered by prolific engineer Mika Jussila of Finnvox studios, whose previous clients include Tuomas Holopainen, Amberian Dawn and Finntroll. If I had not heard Satyricon I would think they had a totally modern sound. I find these elements of older styles make them stand out from other bands of the genre and is a strength. Another strength is that their music is strongly driven by vocal melodies which makes then stand out. It is a very feminine record without being overly girly and soft.
They are difficult to compare to other bands but a cross between Edenbridge and Lyriel springs immediately to mind. The band seem to mostly play in home country but I hope to be able to catch them live as soon as possible. They are a great band who will remain a feature of my playlist for some time. Date retta a me: And be sure to listen over at SoundCloud to sample a wide variety of songs that highlight their soulful sound. Be sure to catch them if you can, at Symphony Metalfest, Switzerland, as they are sure to light up the stage with their enduring charm and modern melting of ancient forest grooves and swirling melodies.
The title-track is the opener and it is a brilliant song: Not to mention the traditional instruments that cannot miss in a folk-tinged record. The strings, the percussion, the arrangement, everything is very well crafted. I love the fact that they never lose their rock edge. Listen to the ending of the song; the final arrangement will blow your mind.
If you are a lover of folk and pagan metal, you cannot miss this release. The quality is very high and it is a pleasant listening. MaterDea, un nome ed una certezza nostrana!
