Tangled Souls is a grown up paranormal romance set against two mysteries that end up having deeper repercussions than are first apparent. The sample was engaging enough to draw me into buying. I immediately liked both of the leading characters with their different psychic gifts, and Tangled Souls was a random find pulled from the Ether, that I decided to sample based on the cool title and the appealing cover and the fact that I recognized Oliver's name from her YA Demon Trapper's Daughter series.

I immediately liked both of the leading characters with their different psychic gifts, and their very different backgrounds make for an interesting pairing: Gavina is a Wiccan ghost whisperer who 'shepherds' spirits to the Light and Doug O'Fallon is a PI former cop and transplanted Irish Catholic with a psychometric talent. Since both are devout to their own faiths, there are elements associated with both of their religions that play a part in the story and add depth to their characters. I do have to mention though the fact that Doug was twice divorced did give me pause, but when I wrote to ask Oliver, she said she did her homework and though it is uncommon for a Catholic to have two marriages annulled, it is possible under certain circumstances.

At around pages long estimated by the number of kindle locations there is ample time for for the Doug and Gavina to move from their initial somewhat adversarial relationship to becoming lovers. I liked watching them to get to know and appreciate each other, despite their not insignificant differences, as the romance develops. The longer than typical PNR length also means that there is also time for the investigations of the mysteries that the pair are working on to unfold in a satisfactory way that uses both of their unusual talents.

Add to all that some interesting side characters - including a few incorporeal ones and one with feathers - and I ended being very glad that I stumbled on the slightly off beat Tangled Souls and I will be sure to keep an eye out for Gavina's sister's story which Oliver plans to release in the future. View all 3 comments. The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion. Gavenia Kingsgrave is a witch, a Wiccan. She has a psychic ability where she can see, hear and speak to the dead.

Gavenia is what is known as a Shepherd, she has ghost, spirits or dead people cross over to the other side. Gavenia is hired by clients who's loved ones don't won't to cross over. For whatever reason sometimes a spirit doesn't want to leave earth's realm. So Gavenia goes and tries to talk them into crossing over. Sometimes all she has to do is talk to them and guide them through to the other side. But there are other times that the spirit may need or want something first.

Sometimes the spirit feels like they are leaving something undone or wrong and they have to make it right before they will cross over. There are good spirits as well as bad spirits just like they are good people and bad people in life. Douglas O'Fallon, a former homicide detective and Catholic has his own psychic ability, one that he has kept hidden for years. O'Fallon wants no part of his ability and locked it away in the back of his mind, well as much as he can that is. O'Fallon is hired by a client to prove that Gavenia is a fake; to prove that she can't talk or hear the dead. O'Fallon doesn't want to believe that Gavenia is for real himself because if he believes she is real then he just may have believe in himself that his ability is real as well.

While working on the same case but for different reasons O'Fallon and Gavenia meet and the sparks start flying. At first they sort of clash they don't really like each other but they are probably just trying to hide their attraction to each other from their selves. Both O'Fallon and Gavenia have both been hurt real bad in the past and neither want to relive that experience again.

While both of them are both real stubborn they can't deny their feelings and eventually have to admit how they feel. Gavenia and O'Fallon both get their selves into a lot of trouble each on their own while working their separate cases. They both get their selves all scraped and banged up at times but both are very strong people and somehow seem to make it out alive in the end.

You know Gavenia was a tough woman and could take care of herself without any help from someone else. But she still knew that there were times that she knew she couldn't handle it all by herself and she knew when to call for reinforcements. Now that is what you would call a strong person is someone who knows that there is times when you need to help and there is nothing wrong in asking for it. She knew that it didn't make her weak to ask for help it actually made her stronger and smarter.

Tangled Souls is one of those books that will grab your attention right the first page and will hold it right up until the very end, it is a very fast read. One minute you are reading the first paragraph and then the next thing you know you are reading the last word and you're like no way it is over? I would love to read more about Gavenia and O'Fallon.

Bestselling Series

I hope that there will be a second book. It would be fun to see how O'Fallon handles things with Gavenia when she goes out on her own to help some poor soul to cross over without telling him. I think he would blow his top especially if she got hurt or in trouble. If you have not read Tangled Souls then I recommend that you pick up a copy today and read it you will love it. Oct 19, Alice Liu rated it it was amazing. I had trouble getting out of the gate with with book.

The writing felt abrupt and choppy. It almost felt like it was going for a Noir feel But, just when I didn't think I could go on, the story exploded in complexity, and suddenly the writing was perfectly suited. I think some of my early trepidation was because of O'Fallon's religious beliefs. I wasn't sure if the book was going to be religious. The religion issue belongs strictly to O'Fallon and makes for I had trouble getting out of the gate with with book. The religion issue belongs strictly to O'Fallon and makes for really interesting reading as he judges Wiccan Gavenia for being a Heathen because of her psychic abilities, yet he is psychic himself.

He even has a harder time reconciling his religion with his gifts than his priest. It's a constant and fun area of contention between him and Gavenia. Overall the book reads like a cross between a detective novel and a cozy mystery. I also liked the portrayal of Guardians who, though all-knowing, suffer from personality foibles as much as their human charges.

As for O'Fallon's religious issues, they actually bring a new and refreshing perspective to the paranormal genre, and I hope there are more books coming out with him and Gavenia. Does it sound exaggerated to you? Because let me tell you, I forgot to cook and I had to be dragged to sleep, as well.

Huh, what do you say now? Trust me, I can't believe it myself and still, it's really happened. This book it's an addiction, you keep telling "just one more chapter" and soon you realise you have reached the end. There's something magic This review was originally posted on my blog, Darkest Sins.

There's something magic in the whole story, but I would say that the main characters are the reason why this is such a compelling book them and an awesome parrot! They have strong, fascinating personalities and their dark backgrounds are something that just make them even more captivating. Gavenia and Doug are not the classic 'beauty stereotype' you would expect to find in a Paranormal Romance, they're not perfect but quite simple and this is exactly what makes them particularly believable. I could almost see those two around and I genuinely felt like everything was real and not just a story on paper.

Lots of kudos to the author for that! I would recommend grabbing a copy now and start testing your faith What a nice way to escape my real world problems while worrying about damage from Hurricane Harvey. Doug O'Fallon was the perfect foil for Gavenia Kingsgrave and vice versa, this clever combination of paranormal romance and crime drama was very engrossing and such an easy transition from story point to story point it was a crying shame when I finished. There is so much more to appreciate in this book but rather than spoiling the story will instead heartily recommend reading it for yourself.

Oct 08, Sapphyria rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: I would be lying if I didn't say that I went into this book with a bit of hesitation. I had the mindset that no one Jana writes about will ever be as complex, headstrong, and completely lovable as Riley and Beck were.

If you haven't read her 4-novel Demon Trapper's Daughter series you are seriously missing out, by the way. I couldn't have been more wrong!! Gavenia is a Wiccan - a true witch - that is also psychic, sees the dead, and is the Shepherd who helps souls cross over into the next plane. She doesn't accept payment for her services, choosing to earn a living by transcribing documents instead.

When the father of a young boy killed in a hit and run accident requests her help, she has no idea where this incident will take her. He won't cross over until he sees Merlin - his black lab and best friend. When her client's wife left, she also took the dog and now no one, including his wife knows where Merlin is. Doug O'Fallon is a former police officer, who also has a psychic gift, however, he chooses to deny it instead of embracing it.

When the mother-in-law of Gavenia's client hires Doug to find out just what exactly Gavenia is up to, he also has no idea the journey he's about to take. As he investigates Gavenia, he also takes on the case of young man that committed suicide leading him into the proverbial lion's den when Doug soon discovers that the precinct where his priest's young son works, is full of corruption; his friend's son Adam, partnered with the ringleader.

Unbeknownst to both Gavenia and Doug, the cases they are working on all of them intersect and the end results will shock you. Gavenia is a very likable, down-to-earth character but also stubborn and willful. She has some serious emotional and physical baggage from her childhood that has beaten her down and plummeted the amount of self-esteem she has.

Her romantic life isn't great either since losing her boyfriend in a car accident. The fact that she isn't airbrushed model perfect makes her character even more astounding. Her interactions with her Guardian, Bart, are priceless and sometimes he steals the show. Doug is a man who also has a horrific past that he discovers he hasn't been able to move past.

Between his job as a cop and the emotional wreckage he drags behind him, his inability to maintain a lasting relationship is beginning to take its toll. He fights between the way he was raised - devout Catholic - and the psychic abilities that have been bestowed upon him, allowing us to see a multi-layered Irishman with depth. His inability to accept Gavenia's polar opposite way of living has a way of righting itself and Jana Oliver does a wonderful job evolving him and his attitude. The interactions between Gavenia and Doug are very emotionally charged which radiates to the reader as well.

There is a balanced amount of humor and the banter between Doug and Gavenia is natural and comfortable.

These two characters, along with the secondary characters, were well written and interesting. The background given for not only Doug and Gavenia, but Gavenia's sister, Doug's priest, and others enriched this novel and gave us enough back story to put everything together. This is a descriptive novel in that enough detail is given to form the scene in your mind without overdoing it and not allowing your creative mind any room to move. Overly descriptive novels tend to become wordy and boring - Tangled Souls does not become either of those things.

Tangled Souls is one of those books that grabs you and pulls you in right from the beginning. I became wholly engrossed in the novel, completely captivated by not only the interactions and budding relations but the story has a plot - a strong plot. And, unfortunately, some of the situations developed in the novel could be based on reality. At the end of the book when I looked back at the cases both Doug and Gavenia became embroiled in, I sighed and thought to myself, "I wonder how often families end up doing the atrocities that go on in this book.

Gavenia, aka Gav to me, is a nedium of sorts. She can see and speak to dead people. It starts with a small boy who died getting stuck, and things get a little out of control in just a short time.

I loved her character, as all she wants to do is be left alone from those skeptics so she can help those spirits who really need her. She has a very optimistic outlook on life and though she has some negative things going on, she tries not to let it bring her down.
