The final cadence is an unusual combination of plagal and dominant-to-tonic movement. In this ABA' setting, Brahms pursues the same antiphonal technique we find in the first motet, although there is more text repetition and the overlapping statements fall more closely together.

For the second verse, Brahms moves to the minor mode to convey the potential fall of a house divided against itself.
