I hated loving this book. Black has a penchant for writing about the scourge of human society, leaving me with a sense of filth, and therefore compelling me to exfoliate. Val is impossible to describe. In possession of one lezzie best friend, a mohawk donning boyfriend, I hated loving this book. When Val walks in on her mother getting it on with her boyfriend, Val flees, going nowhere, and reveling in her lack of destination. She finds herself in New York City, homeless, but free.
Val is introduced to a world that will afford you every possible pleasure you care to take, while leaving you living in squalor and slowly choking the life from you, one Never hit at a time. Val drowns in the world of fairie, and yet finds her inner strength, as well as the love she craves. But in order to save herself, and the troll she loves, Val must learn that being free to make your own bad decisions serves no purpose other than enabling you to own your destruction. The characters within this story suck at life. Val would have wound up dead, on in the very least, assaulted.
These characters run from their problems, steal, take drugs, and engage in casual sex. And yet I loved this book because these characters drop f bombs, filch, become addicts, and engage in casual sex. View all 23 comments. Oct 13, Candace Robinson added it. So I didn't like this one as much as the first book, but I still loved it! I liked that the characters aren't your typical characters. Like you may not really like them, but you still totally do! Also, can I just say the troll love was freaking awesome!
I liked that Holly Black made the character fall for a troll and not a "hot" troll either! Although, I'm sure he's super adorable because his personality was lovely! I felt for Valerie a lot, and yes she did some stupid things, yet I still wanted So I didn't like this one as much as the first book, but I still loved it! I felt for Valerie a lot, and yes she did some stupid things, yet I still wanted to give her a big hug! This world has sucked me in and I can't wait to start book three right away!! No idea why, maybe I'm super lazy or I just never got the book.. It follows Val Russell, who is about 17 years old, and she have a terrible life. Her family sucked a bag of dicks and her whole life spiraled down a dark ass rabbit hole. Yeah, things were not sunny on her side of the street. The grass was not greener for her. Well, her life sort o Ever since I finished Tithe I've wanted to finish this series.. Well, her life sort of gets better when she finds herself within a homeless crowd. From this, she meets Dave, Lolli, and Luis. Things don't always go according to plan when Val is involved which is probably why this book was so entertaining.
I wouldn't necessarily say it was a page turner from start to finish - because I did get bored while reading this. Speaking of the people she meets, Lolli, man, she was so freaking weird! That whole killing a cat just because she didn't want to take care of it.. I cringed so hard. I don't even like cats that much and I would never do that. Besides that, things happened in this book that kind of shocked me a little bit.
Overall, it was an interesting book that I'm kind of happy that I dove into. I'm super happy that I dove back into this series and I can't wait to dive into the next book of this one. I hope it's not as creepy or cringe-worthy as this one.. Sep 11, Lisa Litberg rated it liked it. I have mixed feelings about this book. I found the idea of the story captivating.
Faeries are real, and they walk among us, hidden by glamour from human eyes. And they aren't necessarily good faeries--like humans, some are good, and some are stealthy. Through unforeseen circumstances, she ends up indebted to a troll, delivering potions to faeries. But faeries are being poisoned, and Val I have mixed feelings about this book. But faeries are being poisoned, and Val ends up risking her life to solve the mystery and protect her unlikely troll-friend. I liked the premise. And I found myself drawn into the love story that unfolded between Val and Ravus, the troll.
Unfortunately, I thought the writing was inconsistent. The plot seemed choppy and the characters were underdeveloped. The story didn't "flow" well enough from one scene to the next, making it less believeable. There were a lot of loose ends at the close of the story which seemed to have been forgotten, or pushed aside, and which I would have liked to seen closed.
But even though I was disappointed by this book in many ways, the lure of the faerie world stays with me. I might try reading something else by her, just for more of that Jun 19, Miss Bookiverse rated it it was amazing Shelves: This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. She does the different voices perfectly, especially Ravus'. I remember that I had stumbled across Holly Black's website some years ago and thought of her as some "wannabe writer", I take that back now.
She's a fantastic writer. Her imagination is great, her characters are modern and have depth and she uses language very well. Her style is quite fast and if you don't pay attention for a minute you might lose track but I prefer that to books with tons of unnecessary, boring paragraphs.
What I loved as well was the anti-heroness about Val. How she shaves off her hair, gets dirtier every day and still is loved. And all the stuff about the Never, the drug similarities, such an interesting idea!
The only thing that put me off a little was the beginning when Val discovers the affair between her mom and her boyfriend. I know this is an important event to get the story started and I supposed it has happened before but it just seemed so unrealistic and weird yes, I know, "unrealistic" might be the wrong word in a fantasy novel.
Another thing I loved was the ending. Lots of books I've enjoyed during reading them, have disappointed me with their weak endings. Valiant's last sentence was exactly right and perfectly fitting. All in all a fabulous book about a modern fairytale. View all 12 comments. Apr 24, Amanda rated it did not like it Recommends it for: I hated this book from the first page.
Strong words, I know, but let's just have it out. Trite, lame and basically a waste of tree. The plot was blurg, the characters were frighteningly unenthralling, the writing was fair, but you can find decent writing on the back of a cereal box. The one book's one saving grace was a troll and though the idea was cool, it was hardly enough to save the entire horrible mess. To rant in depth, I have to start with the drug thing. Magic as a drug seen it! And that's the big problem I have with Black. Her characters, her plot, they're constructed like cheap, ugly whores. They have to wear a hellva lot of horrid make-up and will do just about anything to make a few bucks in order to pay their pimps.
From the very beginning she's throwing in Jerry Springer-esque turns in what begins to feel like a tacky attempt to hook through shock. Okay, so street kids and drugs and people with piercings and dyed hair, yeah, I know how those things look cool. And being someone who has experience with all of the above, I can't say that I don't appreciate them. But underlying all of these "cool" things is generally such pain and insecurity that to write about them in the way that Black does is like covering a snake-infested swamp with a glittery plastic sheet and inviting your friends to go ice skating.
People can write whatever crap they want, thankfully we don't have to read it. View all 5 comments. December 20, Can't bring myself to finish this novel Nov 07, Kristen rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Valiant by Holly Black Valiant by Holly Black is a very intense teen-fantasy novel about a seventeen-year-old girl named Valerie Russell-also known as: The first to her collection is Tithe.
Both of these books are beautifully written and tie into the world of faeries and trolls and things of such nature. Black is an avid collector of scary stories, creepy dolls, and crazy hats. Val is this amazing character who changes drastically throughout this book. By the end, she is a completely different individual. The suspense and action in this book is what kept me thirsting for more and more. There is added humor that makes this reading that much more worth while. A major theme in this novel is that fighting for who you are, what you love and believe in, and what you know is the truth can not only benefit you, but also everybody else, in the end of a torturous situation.
Heartbroken and devastated from her horrific discovery that her own mother was making out with and cheating on her with her boyfriend, Tom, she boards a train and escapes into the crowded New York streets. While aboard, she cuts her long hair to a buzz, hoping that it will give her some feeling of dignity; she wants a new identity to escape the realness of her situation. Lolli takes Val in under her wing.
One day Val goes along with Dave on one of his deliveries and discovers the mystical world she had only heard of that involves faeries and glamour. No more times that twice a week, and no more times than once a day. This drug allows mortals to have glamour to mask their appearance and make them seem unbelievably beautiful and horrifyingly manipulative.
They get everything they ask for and never feel a thing until the drug starts to wear away. While on the Never, Lolli and Val decide to go check out a specific place where Dave makes his deliveries; the home of a troll that goes by the name of Ravus. Ravus was put into exile by the order of the faerie queen because of a sword fight against his best friend, Tamson, which had gone terribly wrong.
He is also the maker of Nevermore and while trying to break into his house, they are attacked by a gorgeous glass sword. Short moments after their arrival, the troll shows up and makes an attempt to punish the two girls, however, Val escapes, leaving Lolli. While on the way to do a delivery, Val witnesses something terrible; there is a dead mermaid lurking above the water; a Folk.
Ravus arrives, once again just in time, and informs her of the poisonings that have been happening and that he is a main suspect because of the potions that he makes; the potions she and Dave have been delivering. Val is now severely caught up in a heap of trouble along with Dave, Lolli, Luis, and Ravus.
Val is frustrated and relieved all at the same time. Now not only is Val caught up in the mystery, but Ruth is too. The entire gang has their lives at stake and who will be to blame? Will Ravus end up being the culprit and will Ruth and Val make it out alive? Are Dave, Lolli, and Luis the ones to blame for the Folk poisonings, or is it the wicked Mabry-who was also put into exile because Ravus killed her love, Tamson? However, to unmask the unknown, you must read this mythically majestic novel, ever so wonderfully written by the great Holly Black!
Jun 24, Claire rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: I was a bit disappointed when Valiant didn't start up where Tithe ended. However, I quickly got over it. This story follows year-old Val Russell who runs away from her dysfunctional home within the first few chapters. She also finds herself in the company of three homeless teens--Lolli, Dave, and Luis who live on an abandoned subway platform. Eerie and strange, Val finds herself c I was a bit disappointed when Valiant didn't start up where Tithe ended.
Eerie and strange, Val finds herself caught in the web of drugs she's never seen, and a life she never imagined. Luis is severe, blind in one eye, and pierced with iron. He also wears the role of protector for both Lolli and Dave. He's none too happy to find Val among them. Dave is the younger brother who mistakenly takes Val on a delivery her first morning with the trio.
With him, she finds the web of glamour that will keep her from ever seeing anything the same way again. Under the blanket of the world of faerie, she finds someone to stand up for and takes control of her future. I can't wait for Ironside which picks up Roiben and Kaye's continuing story. I thought Kaye, the main character of the first book, Tithe , had a difficult childhood, but it was nothing compared to this. I wonder if Holly Black had a difficult childhood too. Most of the book follows Val and her friends Lolli, Dave, and Luis who live in a disgusting, abandoned subway station, while they are high on faerie drugs all day.
Val even starts acting like Alex DeLarge at one point when she breaks into a family's home. Lolli kills a cat at one point because she is just tired of taking care of it. There is also cutting and casual sex among friends. So just be warned it might not be for the very young.
The best part is Ravus, the troll Val falls in love with. Ravus is extremely sympathetic. It was hard to get an image of him in my mind but I gathered he looked basically human, except with slightly green skin and large teeth. We start north until almost dusk. The Teleen are private people, and Jack has assured us of their complete cooperation. They will host us for the night. I remind everyone to keep their hands to themselves for, like Jack, they can electrocute with one touch.
He thought maybe it was meant to be funny but when I kept reading there was no indication that Ewan, the guide, meant to be anything but serious. No other characters were shown to be smiling, no elbow pokes or chuckling. What a title that is! Lady Blythe will allow the travelers to pass but wants to keep Shade why, I ask myself. Shade's "spirit guides" the voices in her head tell her to ask the Dyrad for a riddle.
I am just about ready to crack up here! Oh and I forgot to mention that if you reverse your clothes you can fend of the "sinister" creatures of Faerie. Wonder why they didn't offer that to Shade this time. Who knows, I guess I can always use a good laugh.
Now now , dont think that its some sort of thesis or anything that she has stacked pages of This character also confused me. And those are my issues with the book. Aug 25, Haleema rated it did not like it Shelves: Sep 11, Sandy rated it really liked it Shelves: I wish book 3 was already out!
Ok, I finished the book and what do I think? Crap, Crap, Crap, Crap. Sorry if this offends any other readers who liked the book but I just can't say I enjoyed any of it. The dialogue is so stiff and lacks any kind of personality. One way to disrupt a flowing conversation, in MHO, is to keep saying the person's name.
I mean every time a person would say something they had to start it with a name or end it with their name. Almost like a formal conversation where you are talking to royalty or something. When she needs to escape from some soldiers, she conveniently falls into an immortals oubliette. The only magic she has been taught is how to make a glowing stone, conveniently lighting her prison. The person who fishes her out of the river after jumping off a waterfall and surviving conveniently has a map to where she needs to go. There are so many little things I can nit-pick about this book, I could continue all day but I will just leave it there and let you make up your own mind.
View all 9 comments. Please say this will be a series! Thought I was going to 'fall' for one character, and ended up smitten with another. And boy, oh boy, was there eye candy to go around. This is the type of fae story I just love- getting swept up suddenly in fae events, culture, people- anything and everything fae involving equal amounts of good and bad. They may be all magical and powerful, but there is a dark edge even in some of the seemingly most innocent offers. I really, really enjoyed it. Younger readers Please say this will be a series!
Younger readers can pick this up without being exposed to overly adult themes. It's like a dark fae story mixed with some old school Tolkien. It was witty, and easy to follow, and easy to keep the menagerie of characters separate. The girl radiated cold like an open window. And it's only the butt crack of dawn. Sadly, it's not, at least the last time I checked. This is a YA book I would offer to my 12 year old son and read alongside him. I'm not going anywhere Wow , what a journey Ever Shade has been!!!
So new and so unexpected! Lets get started with this review before the Demi - fey arrive. They are 'yours truly' sinister and can be quite a handful.
You dont want to get trapped around here when that happens. Ever Shade is the story of Shade , a teenage girl.
Shade is your average yet so-not average high schooler. Dont be , once you read the book you'll know exactly what i'm talking about. Anyways , so shade is not your ordinary high schooler , she's different - she's always been and because of that she considers herself a freak. But then one day everything she thought about herself and the world around her changed. Answer to all those questions is what awaits the readers in this epic journey called Ever Shade. The cover is just plain gorgeous!! Simple and very true to what the readers can expect from this book. Ever Shade being the first book in this trilogy gives us insight on the fairy realm and Shades hidden powers - well not all of them , but a few.
So keeping that in mind , the cover is absolutely justified. Things i loved about this book: Every single freakin thing about this book was awesome!!! Not a single moment of boredom! If i had my way i would have devoured it in a single day. But no , that could not be a reality! Anyhoooo , what matters is that i finished the book and OH. Seriously , what a journey it has been.. I'm reeling in the effect of tha awesomness. And i think i should be thanking Author Alexia Purdy for that!!
That woman writes like a GOddess!! I find that really funny and i loved the fact that Alexia made use of that kind of writing technique. Now now , dont think that its some sort of thesis or anything that she has stacked pages of I could feel the serenity of being at the mountains and fountains and the forests , the fear of the unknown , the shyness of being kissed for the first time , the pain , the sorrows , the hatred. I'm totally in love with the way she writes..
The characters in the book were awesome as well!!! I found myself liking almost all of them. Shade being my favourite! At times she acted out as a child curious to know things. The way she asked questions upon questions had me giggling and thinkin "Slow down there girlie , you're like an express train right now!!
Dylan was my second most fav character!! Awww i loved him sooo much. Cant wait to read more about him! I have an eerie feeling about certain things , but i dont want to get into it right now!! I also loved the pace at which the story kept on moving forward. It was just perfect , giving you many things to look at and learn about - like i said earlier it felt like the reader of the book is right there seeing and experiencing everythin with their own eyes. I loved the whole journey and what we could learn about the fey realm , and i cant wait to read more!!!
Certain theories and ideas and also points have started buzzing around in my head as to what the second book in this awesome trilogy be about. I also have a feeling that certain unexplained and unanswered questions will be answered in that book! Ohh , the eerie feeling just crept up again!! Recommended for readers who enjoy reading about hot feys who can kill you with their touch and also for fans who want an all inclusive paid trip to the exotic fairy realm and back.
This is that one trip you wont regret taking!! Check this out for sure! I'm not normally one to read books on Faeries but I must say this one had me intrigued from page one till the end. Its filled with mystery, action and magic and a compelling storyline that I read in one sitting. Steady paced storyline, with a great cast of supporting characters, chapters that flowed smoothly and an intriguing plot.
I enjoyed the determination of the main characters, her life was not as it seemed. She always thought she was different and upon meeting Jack her life was thrown into I'm not normally one to read books on Faeries but I must say this one had me intrigued from page one till the end. She always thought she was different and upon meeting Jack her life was thrown into a world she never thought existed. Shade always new something was different - the voices within, had no real meaning until she met Jack.
Upon Jack discovering Shade and her hearing voices, he takes her back to his world where Shade is told she is the key to saving his land. Here Shade discovers she is Part Fae - but Shade is in denial. Feeling somewhat pressured yet compelled to help, Shade embarks on a trip to the fountain to obtain the liquid that will save this land of Fae and stop the wars within.
Twists and turns are thrown at Shade and along her travels, she is introduced to many - some evil, some good, she learns to embrace what she has within. Shade discovers her blood lines, and along the way she also discovers how to use the magic within. This is just the beginning of an intriguing series, I alone rated it on Alexia's compelling storyline. As I have not read many books on Faeries I really enjoyed it. The addition of the Teleen line was certainly a treat and the fact that Shade was immune to it even more so.. Interim blue is filled with action, adventure, mystery, magic and mayhem and I'm sure for all the readers out there who enjoy Faeries then this is for you..
Alexia Purdy has jumped leaped and bounded - full throttle ahead - into this series, giving us readers a fantastic insight into the world that she has created ,compelling characters, and a storyline thats draws you into the pages at every turn! I finally understand Alexia's writing style. Some reviewers including myself have stated that the first part of her books are a bit slow.
I said that about Reign of Blood which haunts me. I cannot stop thinking about it and others have said it about this book. I don't necessarily think that this is what is actually going on. Yes, they are slow moving. But little do you know that Alexia is weaving her magic word spell. When I picked this book up Sunday night I couldn't focus on it. I put it down after only reading it for a half an hour or so. I thought that it hadn't captured my imagination yet.
Boy, was I wrong.
I couldn't STOP thinking about this book. I didn't even realize I was hooked. Alexia is so sublte when introducing her story and characters. She doesn't open with fireworks and flashes. She weaves a truely addictive story. This fae world is unlike any other one I have encountered. I don't read a lot of Faery stories. As a matter of fact, up until now I thought Julie Kagawa pretty much was the be all and end all of the fae and dreamy fairy boys. This book is so much more. Purdy's world is darker than most supernatural books I have read.
Shade is not playing on her home court and it shows. If that girl hadn't had some major help she would never have made it out of there. The male fae with an exception oh, be still my beating heart. I'll be honest I was not impressed with Shade throughout most of the book. I don't think we are meant to be. Maybe city girls can sympathize with her being throw into the wilderness but I found her whining My opinion of her competely changes by the end of the book.
Off to read Ever Fire! Oh, how I love me a good fairytale! Ever Shade was a great story, with a great concept, and a great plot. I really enjoyed the MC, Shade. She was a typical teenager, except for the voices in her head, that didn't know she posessed something greater inside, and through her journey, began to believe in herself and witness the magic she posessed.
Author Alexia Purdy painted a wonderful world filled with faeries and other magical beings. I hope to visit there one day! The only sad thing is that I Oh, how I love me a good fairytale! The only sad thing is that I have to wait for book 2! But, I heard that it's going to be released sooner than we thought. I'm not too sad.
Alexia Purdy has done it with Ever Shade! Is there something wrong with her or is her difference magical? One minute Shade is a human teen, the next she is thrown headlong into the world of the fae, a world she thought real only in tales and fiction. Ever Shade is filled with adventure, warriors, danger and even some cute fae boys, because come on, this is fantasy for teens, right?!
Alexia Purdy takes the time to fully develop her world, introduce the conflict, toss in tons of action and give us characters that grow as the story progresses. The pace quickens each each turn of the page in this slightly dark faery tale, feeding the imagination the emotions, sights, sounds and actions of a magical world in peril. I highly recommend this to YA readers as a wonderful way in to the world of fantasy!

I rarely don't finish a book, but this one was just unpalatable, and I had such high hopes for it because of the gorgeous cover and great sounding story. I had trouble with the writing, which was very simplistic and did a lot of telling as opposed to showing. There were even instances where conversation was used to tell me what people were doing instead of just showing me. Ever Shade reads like a completed story, without the need for a series, which is a bit odd…considering another hundred pages or so would be just enough to add the needed character depth and natural progression.
There is so much travelling and conflict involved, but it sped by so quickly that it really just felt like they spent maybe three or four days travelling before a lot of coincidences made everything go much quicker.
