The number becomes 25 if the novel The Secret Tomb is counted: The character has also appeared in a number of books from other writers as well as numerous film, television, stage play, and comic book adaptations. Five authorized sequels were written in the s by the celebrated mystery writing team of Boileau-Narcejac. Like him, he is often a force for good, while operating on the wrong side of the law. Those whom Lupin defeats, always with his characteristic Gallic style and panache, are worse villains than he.

Lupin shares distinct similarities with E. I enjoyed the writing style and it's a fun way to brush up my French. The story is ridiculous. Don't even get me started on the characters. I could only finish this by pretending that it's narrated by Lupin himself and that he is the most unreliable narrator EVER.

Parfois incroyable, mais toujours intelligent Feb 21, Liny rated it really liked it. C'est toujours un plaisir! Ici, on le retrouve dans sa jeunesse encore assez candide et fou amoureux de son adversaire la plus redoutable: Mar 20, Droid rated it it was ok. I confess I'm huge fan of Leblanc's Lupin novels, but this one really disappointed I don't want to spoil the plot, but needless to say Leblanc coughs up one of his standard characterless females blessed with great beauty and the mandatory "limpid" eyes etc.

Then the Countess shows up and -as it happens- she's young, pretty and possibly insanely evil.

Now everything's established, we're waiting for the usual ridiculous robbery comedy farce to begin. Usually Lupin makes up for the fact that he's a ridiculously egotistical prat by being funny, laughing at himself and usually acting in accordance with some vaguely relatable moral code. Lupin's native wit was all but absent, while his arrogance ballooned out into massive monologues of insane self-worship As for Lupin's oft-touted "heart of gold", it seemed to have been superseded by his "muscles of steel" - of which Leblanc could not get enough.

Arsène Lupin

As the the pages fluttered by, Lupin became increasingly arrogant, misogynistic, bile-filled, vicious and downright unbalanced, amid a greasy backdrop of incessant gloating. As a result, while Leblanc drooled salaciously, the reader was left with an increasingly unlikeable lead, with whom I found it impossible to sympathise. Between Leblanc worshipping Lupin and Lupin worshipping Lupin, there wasn't much to enjoy. Still, I kept waiting for Leblanc to deliver the magnificent blow that'd deflate Lupin's ego, inject a little self-depreciating comedy into the stale sycophantic slop, and make the whole thing fun.

As for any obstacles or setbacks, Lupin overcame them far too easily and smug soliloquy followed smug soliloquy.

All this, bad as it was, might have been forgivable if I was feeling particularly generous but as the story progressed, I found myself viewing Lupin as the true villain. Finally there came the "scissors scene". For me the scissors scene resembled a magnificent leap - Lupin plunged right over the anti-hero line and straight into screwed-up misogynist territory. I won't spoil the surprise, but needless to say that the scissors scene extinguished the last particle of pleasure I had in reading this travesty.

A mean-spirited misadventure in an otherwise fun series. Apr 26, France Nadeau rated it really liked it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

Maurice Leblanc has always been among my favorite authors. In this book, Leblanc clearly states Lupin's strenghts and weaknesses.

The casting is good. The French has finally come up with their version of an action adventure that everyone can enjoy, but doesn't insult your intelligence.. What can I say? And what 's amazing, for a character and adventures that are French French French not to say Norman to the core ,we have often the strange feeling of watching a made-in -Hollywood movie. As the the pages fluttered by, Lupin became increasingly arrogant, misogynistic, bile-filled, vicious and downright unbalanced, amid a greasy backdrop of incessant gloating. Romain Duris and Kristin Scott Thomas especially her!

In this book, his mistakes lead beautifully the readers on the wrong path. I love how we start with one antagonist and end with two.
