I write this after reading the first book a couple of years ago and the second in the last week.
This is a book series intended for teen readers, and uses short sentences and colloquial grammar rather than the classical grammar us fossils prefer suitable for that audience.
It also borrows or alludes to various other background paradigms such as 'Nephilim' from Genesis and the weaponry and social structures from 'Stargate'. These points make the narrative accessible even to readers who might not I write this after reading the first book a couple of years ago and the second in the last week.
These points make the narrative accessible even to readers who might not recognise their background. The pace is quick and the characters are consistent but drawn only deeply enough to provide identification. This is appropriate to a teen-adventure story. The plot involves time travel with all the risks of paradox and inconsistency entailed, but these traps are avoided by a rigorous even if not immediately apparent structure to how time works. This structure is more explicit in the second book in the series. This not only avoids the usual 'time travel traps', but is also used to add to the tension in the story line.
The usual teen-age frustrations about time are worked into the plot necessity very effectively.
Romantic tensions what teen-age book can afford to ignore these? Then everything changes when she discovers a golden glimmer in the corner of the school quadrangle.
