He was mentored about the ways of society since he never expected to be a viscount and the earl that mentors him just happens to be the man that has Jocelyn's belongings. Not sure who to believe, the earl or Jocelyn, sends Daniel back to his roots in a quest for the truth. Unfortunately, the truth turns out to be the worse kind and it endangers not just him, but also Jocelyn and the hope for a future together.
As with most novellas, I wish this was just a bit longer so we could have had more time to see the relationship develop between Jocelyn and Daniel but even so, I thought the length was done well. The instant attraction sends sparks flying and the action keeps this couple coming back together. Lies are told but truths are quickly revealed as well which I appreciated. I liked how Daniel has been a constable and inherited a title he never expected to have or want and this is an area I would have liked just a bit more about, but again, it worked well within this novella.
Daniel is smart, loyal and confident and a wonderful foil to Jocelyn and her bold nature. You know who the villain is but how it all unraveled was a delight. This novella has it all--action, romance, love and passion. We get just enough glimpses of one of the upcoming heroes and I am very anxious to see how Ms Burke redeems him! Lovely story for a lovely price. I enjoyed this book and I'd like to read more about these characters. I guess the three stars is because it feels unfinished.
The last chapter, I think, was meant to lead into the rest of the series, but it was confusing - seemed like we were going to open up a whole new plotline, only to have it then end. Also, because I have semi-high standards for historical fiction, and I don't lower them for romance. I don't know enough about the Regency period to be very high-falutin' about it, but a lot o I enjoyed this book and I'd like to read more about these characters.
I don't know enough about the Regency period to be very high-falutin' about it, but a lot of the dialogue and inner dialogue sounded too modern to me. Did they really refer to their self-esteem at the time, or think things like "Wait -- did he"? I don't know; it just seemed a little loose. I was very surprised, because I had just read something that explained that "contemporary", in the romance genre, means that there're fairly explicit sex scenes.
I suppose it would be weird to call it a "contemporary" Regency romance, but -- actually, that's exactly what it is. Regency setting, but more contemporary characters and language. I did really enjoy that the titular thief was the female protagonist. I had foolishly assumed it was going to be some stereotypical "woman can't help loving a rake" kind of plotline.
Nope; the protagonist is a very strong, smart character who is determined to solve the mystery of who stole her late parents' jewelry. I also loved that it was a mystery as well as a romance. I would say that it might have worked better set in more modern times, but I'm a sucker for the juxtaposition of those strict social scenes with characters who break out of their limits.
Rollicking good read, just a little on the imbalanced and unfinished side. May 11, Aspoon rated it did not like it. This book was not as good as others claimed it to be. I tried my best to stay focused but I eventually skimmed through pages because the writing started to sound ridiculous. I did not like the fact that when one of the characters said or done something the writer points out why that character did it..
Spoiler alert A good example.. Jagger leaned back in his chair so that his head rested against the wall. This would have been a good time for both characters to quickly and wittily interact Besides the wording sometimes made me feel like one minute I'm stepping back in the 80's and not the s.. But to each it's own. Some may love the book Jun 26, Tuyetmai rated it really liked it. It is actually a novella, and the only tie in to the rest of the series is Jagger. He is a criminal, who has appeared or been mentioned briefly in all the previous books.
Jagger's character is developed a little more and it is hinted that he is more than what he seems. Theirs is an intriguing story about stolen heirlooms. Daniel was a constable before he inherited a Viscountcy. Helping Jocelyn determine who robbed her family calls to his sense of justice and also gives him an excuse to keep her close.
I purchases this novella, long before I became a member of Darcy's Dream Team where I received ARCs in exchange for honest reviews , but hadn't gotten a chance to read it until I started reviewing the series. Daniel and Jocelyn's story would have been better as a full length novel.
A lot of characters were introduced with no development. The plot was fast paced, which made the story feel rushed, and then everything was resolved much too quickly and unsatisfactorily. I loved that Daniel was a Constable before he became a Viscount. The situation was unique but was not elaborated on. Jocelyn was at times witty and immature, which made her difficult to empathize with.
Daniel and Jocelyn deserved more time for character development. Jan 02, Jess the Romanceaholic rated it really liked it. This is a Quickie Review. September 25, Publisher: Works well as a standalone Steam Level: With refreshing circumstances surrounding both the hero and the heroine, a nice little mystery, and a touch of heat, this little novella was a perfect way to pass the day.
Recommended for fans of honorable heroes who have trouble distancing themselves from their law-enforcement roots, feisty heroines who tend to take matters into their own hands, and a dash of danger sprinkled with a pinch of heat. Always check and confirm prices before purchasing books. The vibrant blue just draws you in! Miss Jocelyn Renwick is a bit reduced in circumstances, but not in essentials!
She speaks her mind, sometimes to her own detriment. When she sees a woman at a ball wearing an item that was stolen from her home, she is incensed! She immediately goes to confront the person who is responsible and is rebuffed in the haughtiest manor. Thus begins the adventure! I enjoyed this story very much!
Miss Renwick is a breath of fresh air! She is high spirited and not a shy miss. Although she is a bit of a wallflower, thinking she is beneath the company, she rallies quickly! The new Viscount is having a hard time adjusting to his new role, after being a constable for so many years and thinking he would stay a constable for many more years, it would be hard to reverse course!
Now he meets Miss Renwick in a ballroom. And his life will never be the same! This was a very quick read, a short, hot novella perfect for a rainy afternoon! The writing was wonderful! Though some of the words used may not have been perfectly period correct, it did not detract from the story for me! I really enjoyed it!
I received a copy of this title in exchange for my honest review Sep 11, Stacy Jones rated it liked it. The plot is good, if only the main characters had anything to do with it. It's sort of like watching Titanic, which is a love story that just happens to take place on board a famous ship that's going to sink to the bottom of the ocean.
You know what's going to happen. That's exactly what this is like. The hero read like he was a cardboard cutout. I wanted to love the guy, but he was just so The hero was definitely one of those "I'm riding on the rails of a great plot! Nothing in the plot was created by the hero. The guy was just along for the ride, which made the love story portion of this novella feel completely false.
I wanted to like it. I love the idea behind the story. I just couldn't like it enough to give it more than three stars. The writing is solid, it could just be so much better. I'll definitely read later works by this author, because I'm hoping this is first time around syndrome, or maybe just bad luck. The writing, as I said, is good. The bones of a good story are here, they were just ignored or applied improperly. Jan 06, Elizabeth rated it it was amazing Shelves: A short, sweet, engaging Novella!!
It's amazing how easy it is to fall into Darcy Burke's historicals! I love reading her books! It's such a great escape and she literally makes you fall back into time and live the story! Darcy's words make them fly off the paper and become real. I always feel her books in my heart. Meeting sexy Daniel Carlyle, former constable and now a new viscount, and the A short, sweet, engaging Novella!! There is so much action, love and passion to be had as we take their journey with them while they solve a crime and fall in love.
Such a great novella! I absolutely adore Darcy's historical novels, and I absolutely recommend them!!! I can't wait to read what's next!! I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. For a short book it doesn't lack anything. I love that Carlyle was a constable and not just someone raised to be a lord, that made him very different from most books. I liked that it was pretty much love at first sight which is a nice change. I laughed at how Joselyn always said what she was thinking, and when she set her mind on something she did it even though she wasn't raised to act like that.
Jagger has become a I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Jagger has become a favorite of mine and I really want to know more about him. There is just something that makes you want to know him. I was expecting the ending, but not how it happened and that was a twist for me. Yes it was easy to figure out who was behind the robberies, but I wanted to know more about his reason for it.
I really enjoyed this novella. It was a very quick read, but packed with a lot of action, suspense and emotional scenes. One thing that I like about reading novellas is that there is no room for any "slow" spots.. At the same time you get to know.. For a short story, you still get a lot of character development. They are not your typical high society couple, but they find that they are good match and the reader is convin I really enjoyed this novella.
They are not your typical high society couple, but they find that they are good match and the reader is convinced of the same. You can't help rooting for them all the way through. I highly recommend this book. Short regency romance with a criminal mystery twist. Fast paced, almost too fast. Not much romance involved. Enough story to entertain and compelling enough to finish. I'm not certain about the idea of a constable becoming a viscount due to two deaths in the family.
That close to the title, he'd be gentry. He could be a vicar, soldiar, maybe a barister. But a constible - a position similar to a Bow Street Runner. Okay, so put that aside and He's not the lordly type that I'm used to reading about. More like an average, typical guy. The heroine is impulsive, smart-mouthed. Can't control her tongue. More child than woman. Some might call her TSTL. Sep 09, Isha Coleman rated it really liked it Shelves: Darcy Burke has done it again. She has created a fascinating story full of conspiracies, alluring characters and mysterious dealings.
What I find compelling about the Secrets and Scandals series is that there is a fine line between what is right and what is wrong.
Yes there is scheming and subterfuge, yet it is hard to identify the shady from the pure. The reason is because bad things are done by good people who feel they have no other choice. To Love a Thief falls into that category. In order t Darcy Burke has done it again. In order to fully understand the circumstances the book has to be read in its entirety.
This is one of those reads that lures you into revisiting the whole series. With bestsellers in contemporary and historical romance-Darcy Burke delivers quality driven, emotionally stimulating reads.
