Today, life expectancy is 71 years, globally. GDP per capita in the West, and in the United States has increased fold, around the world it has increased fold. They are a question of the last years. So I think that the biggest question in economics, and also in politics, is why have the last years been so different from tens of thousands of years that preceded it.
Vulnerable People
Now that you have been living and working in American for quite a while, do you view your work as bipartisan? Or does it have a political slant? I believe in individual responsibility and in free markets. I evaluate candidates on the basis of how committed to freedom they are. As an example, in I supported Bush, and in I supported Kerry.
In I supported Obama, and in I supported Romney. The policy implications of my work, I think, are very obvious: People who are politically free are less likely to go to war with another politically free country. No, and the biggest threat is utopian thinking. Utopians compare the present with what might be called the "future perfect. As long as there are people who go hungry or die from preventable diseases, there will always be room for improvement. We all have a role to play in helping the destitute in our communities and beyond. Our goal is not to paint a rosy picture of the state of humanity, but a realistic one.

You have quite a globetrotting background. How does that inform your work? What do you do to contextualize the data presented on your site? Germans began entering politics only after they had already risen economically.
The black experience in America is of course different from the Irish experience, which in turn is different from the Chinese or German or Jewish experience. Many different racial and ethnic minority groups have experienced various degrees of hardship in the US and in other countries all over the world. How those groups have dealt with those circumstances is something to study closely and draw lessons from going forward — even if the only lesson is to manage expectations.
One of the clear lessons from this history is that human capital has proven to be far more important than political capital in getting ahead. And that reality helps to explain why blacks fared the way they did not only in the Obama era but also in the preceding decades.

The full exercise of human rights by people of African descent depends significantly on their access to education which is fundamental to human development. The discrimination faced by people of African descent is now receiving greater attention and as a result, Afro-descendant groups have increasingly made their voices heard in the policy process. The World Conference created a momentum that helped people of African descent articulate their concerns and rally support. Furthermore, it generated a movement advocating for the promotion and protection of their human rights that has helped strengthen grassroots campaigns around the world.
On an inter-governmental level, the former United Nations Commission on Human Rights created the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent and the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, the Independent Expert on minority issues and the Committee on the Elimination of racial discrimination, which have consistently taken up Afro-descendant issues. At the national level, many countries have amended their constitutions to include clearer references to their multicultural characters.
