Either one of those stories would have been worth the purchase price of the whole book.

Even though she's lost a step on the base paths, in those days twenty years ago Betina Krahn did light, humorous historicals better than anyone ever had before or since. The ending is unbelievably touching -- you'll never look at Abraham Lincoln's picture the same way again!

Edith Layton - Bird of Paradise A young woman works to support herself and her small brother who gets in trouble when he tries to sell the turkey she got as a Christmas bonus. They are helped by a young man who is very attracted to her. I think the characters lacked some interest and I was never much invested in their story.
He goes about trying to solve things but without disclosing his identity to the girl he feels attracted to. The girl was just too bitter. Not that the new husband to be sounded any good but the cowboy didn't seem hero material to me. He kidnaps one of the teachers to convince her to accept the child and finds love instead. A man known for his ugliness marry a beautiful young lady to save her from being sold by her father to the highest bidder.
Although she never sees his face his kindness and companionship make her fall in love with him. View all 4 comments. I liked the first story, "The Bird of Paradise". It was a sweet little story with humor coming in the form of a very large plucked turkey that gets dragged from pillar to post yet still remains fresh for Christmas dinner.
Thumbs down on "Second Cha First of all, I don't know where the name Salvatore Raimondo comes from, I don't see it anywhere between the covers of this book.
Thumbs down on "Second Chance". This is NOT a Christmas story by any means, it just happens to take place during the holiday, with a scene that is practically X rated.
I'm used to Christian romance novels, so forgive me if I sound prudish The "hero" was neither heroic nor likeable. Forcing himself on the heroine on the night before her wedding to another man with every intention of having sex with her does not make me believe that he loves her with all his heart and soul. Bleah, it was just awful. I wanted to like "Kidnapped For Christmas" so much but again, a very inappropriate and highly unbelievable "romance" scene left me colder than a snowball.
Are we really supposed to believe that the kidnapped girl's school administrator who happens to be young and beautiful with the Puritanical background was willing to give herself to her kidnapper after only two days with him? Give me a break. I liked the little girl and the Cockney kidnappers, they were the only saving graces to the story. If you only read one of the stories, let it be this one.
Dec 21, Lord Rose rated it liked it Shelves: As with most anthologies, there were some good stories and some bad. In this case, despite a rather weak beginning, the anthology definitely picked up in the end, with lovely stories by Betina Krahn and Mary Jo Putney. Whose says Christian romance novels can not be fun and entertaining? I say children of God should use their gifts for His glory in such a way where we will draw others to Christ;in a nonboring yet scriptural fashion. One person found this helpful. This was a very interesting collection of novellas. The first took place in New Mexico so I wouldn't call it Victorian but the other 3 definitely were Victorian. The writing style definitely reminds me of Grace Livingston Hill's novels - simple and classic. The female characters in each were strong, independent, faith-filled women. I also liked the fact that each was loosely based on a story from the Bible: He held her hand, guided her, and brought joy in the midst of sorrow. He arranges events in proper order and sets our lives to right after we've put everything at sixes and sevens.
He takes the worn-out patches that we give Him, the mistakes, the terrible holes we've caused with our sins, the frayed edges of our lives, and He pieces them all together into something beautiful and useful. If we give him our scraps, He can make quilts. Dec 04, Gwendolyn Gage rated it really liked it Shelves: They are worth light-hearted entertainment value, but being short Christmas stories that feature romance between characters meeting at the beginning I'm giving it three stars because I especially enjoyed the second novella, "Lone Star".
The daughter of a rich Texan rancher journeys to England to solidify her father's business relationship with an earl by marrying his son.
During her journey, she meets a young English viscount who is fascinated by her speech and quilting. The story had me laughing several times, and I liked the main characters. I wish they were featured in a full-length novel! This is my second book by Catherine Palmer, and I believe I will continue to look for and read all of her books. Her writing doesn't beg to be underlined or studied, but there's something about it.
Because when I read Palmer's stories, I forget that I'm a writer studying the writing craft, and just enjoy reading. View all 3 comments. I got this for free on Amazon.
But the stories are decent. Okay read for free.
Dec 08, Brittany rated it it was ok Shelves: Just not my cut of tea. But specifically there are 4 stores in this book and at the end of each there is a yummy recipe which I did love and I copied them all down to try! They are all happy endings, which is good. If you are into Religi I got this for free on Amazon. Unfortunately I am not into that so I gave it a 2. Dec 24, Stacy rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is a wonderful collection of Christmas stories for the Christian history lover.
I've seen some comment that it is not their cup of tea, because they feel it is " too preachy". I do not agree with that thought, but to each his own. The author uses scripture throughout, and I can see similarities between the storylines and characters of these stories in relationship to the Bible. If some find these offensive there are many other books that people can chose from. Here is my summary: Angel in t This is a wonderful collection of Christmas stories for the Christian history lover. Angel in the Attic-- Fara Canaday is a feisty, high spirited character that I fell in love with instantly.
The difference was Mary Stuart Chern used her gun to capture her man and hold him hostage, while Fara used her gun to send the men away. She said that there would be no man stealing kisses and trying to marry up with her for her money. I give this story 5 stars. There are similarities of the biblical story of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz.
This is a story about forgiveness. Beautiful Christmas anthology Beautifully written novellas capturing the Holiday spirit of Jesus's birth with a Victorian flair. Enjoyed the description of holiday decoration, but more importantly, the character development was excellent. From a Christian perspective, there was a clear and concise message of God's salvation, love and forgiveness. I got this free on Kindle through Amazon. Each story was very enjoyable. I liked the last 2 stories the best. Very good stories I really enjoyed these stories of strong women and interesting male characters.
I do not read many historical fictions but these were a little different. I will look for note books by the author. Too much proselytizing The stories are sweet but the preaching just goes on and on. I don't mind Christian fiction but this is too extreme. If I want pages of sermons I will choose nonfiction.
Great mini stories filled with mystery and romance. Dec 13, Mona Randall rated it it was amazing. I was not disappointed at all. Dec 18, Tanya rated it it was amazing. A wonderful book of four Christmas-y, Christian, heartwarming novellas. I loved the first novella.
What isn't to love about a calamity Jane, mistaken identity, Christmas novella? The second and third books were good but a bit too dramatic. I also loved the fourth book. I would agree that it would have been even better as a novel as it could have been developed more. There was certainly enough there to make it A wonderful book of four Christmas-y, Christian, heartwarming novellas.
There was certainly enough there to make it a novel and then it would've been more real for me. Dec 24, Eustacia Tan rated it really liked it Shelves: Rounding out my Christmas book reviews is this collection of stories set in, you've guessed it, the Victorian era. There are four novellas in total, so here are my thoughts, story by story. Happy reading, and Merry Christmas everyone! Angel in the Attic - This was, strange. It basically stars two people - Lena and Hyatt, who don't want to get married.
But after they meet under odd circumstances neither knows the other is the person they're running away , they fall in love. It would be a sweet st Rounding out my Christmas book reviews is this collection of stories set in, you've guessed it, the Victorian era. It would be a sweet story, except that I don't understand how Lena fell in love.
Hyatt's reasons were crystal clear, but for Lena to fall in love, I'm going to need more than someone telling me that he is smart, witty, listens to her, etc. But the proposal scene was cool. Unfortuately, she's due to marry his younger brother. His younger brother Rupert, by the way, is thoroughly unlikable.
Who on earth cheats before his marriage? Don't tell me, I don't want to know. He didn't deserve his happy ending. Star and the viscount Grey though, deserved theirs, they're a really cute couple. Yes there's an earl involved so far all three stories involve nobility don't they? The whole "social impropriety" thing did add another layer to the story though, I thought it made it a bit more realistic.
The ending was predictable you can't stray too far from the book of Ruth after all , but I did wish some of the villians got more or a comupttence. Behold The Lamb - Yes, nobility makes an appearance, but here, the ordinary people of the Victorian era appear! Sadly, there's very little description about this, it's really mostly a nobility thing.
