Amongst the conflicting information are the amount of Chakras, too -- some say 7, others say 3. So, my questions are: If so, to what end?

And, a partially related question: Are the unlocking of Chakras related to the extinguishing of the Three Flames? Mahayana, being the catch-all term we normally use to refer to Chinese Buddhism and its descendants , uses a different energy map called meridians. Qigong can be completely ignored with little to no consequences. It's just one toolset among many that makes progress on the path more expedient. I think generally this would actually be on the path of cultivation as a means to integrate all experiences onto the Path, basically.

As such, you could say it comes after awakening. I'm don't think such methods could be used properly before the path of seeing - at most, they would establish a link and be part of a connection with a teacher, sangha, etc which is not without value. Ah, I think that makes it a little less like the practice of qigong, which itself is probably better regarded as a 'spiritual maintenance' practice than anything directly related to the path.

I would think that chakra work can be effective at any stage of the path or even if you aren't on the path at all , for the same reasons. At the very least, I have done chakra work outside of any dharmic contexts, and found spiritual benefit for running that 'maintenance. I don't think it necessarily directly does in and of itself, but I won't claim to full knowledge on this extensive topic.

But when integrated with the Path there can I think be specific applications, basically. Feel free to disregard what I'm saying here, as I'm probably not entirely qualified to be talking about this. One persues one goal after another only to remain ever restless or disappointed until the "Something More" one seeks is found. God alone can bring enternal fulfillment. Materialistic desires drive us from the inner Paradise; they offer only counterfeit joys that mask the Pure Joy within. How can , readers go wrong??: This was my first book on the Chakra system and to be quite frankly it has been one of those books I always go back to look for references. My personal opinion is that Anodea Judith, PhD, has done an excellent book, both for the beginner in working and understanding the Chakras as well as the advanced. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular Chakra.
