Great book inside his love for birding as well as his life growing up to wrapping up PLL.
Loved the stories he included along with the pictures. Makes me want to learn more about birds. Jun 15, Brie Garza rated it really liked it. A fun, easy read. Ian seems like a really cool guy and it was nice to hear him outside of his character on PLL.
If you're a fan of Ezra Fitz, this book is for you. It's also the perfect coping method for the end of the PLL series! Aug 22, Munazza Khan rated it liked it. A surprisingly fun and refreshing read - Ian Harding's writing is fresh and original, and really succeeds in showing the light, human sides of the celebrities we know. May 02, Preeti rated it liked it Shelves: This book was surprisingly not bad! In fact, it was just fine, leaving me to give it a final rating of 2. It seemed to be about a young guy albeit white who was into birding, which is somewhat unusual since when you usually think of birders if you think of them at all… you think of older white folks.
So if this book will hel This book was surprisingly not bad! So if this book will help get a few young people into birds, then good for it and good for Ian Harding.
I did get to meet Harding, again because of work, and he was as charming and nice as you could imagine. We did some social media promotion around it and that was quite an experience.
His fans are… passionate seems to be not strong enough a word. Apr 05, Kayla Ashley marked it as to-read Shelves: May 08, Siobhain rated it it was amazing Shelves: I have seen Pretty Little Liars, but have not seen every episode. But every episode I happened to watch had the handsome Ezra in it. His acting abilities are extraordinary and captivating. He continues to soar to new levels. Odd Birds was raw, witty, and educational on so many levels that will leave readers feeling fascinated and entertained.
Ian Harding was so open with this book. He let us into his life growing up, his life as an actor, his passion for bird watching, and learning to be himself in a world that is constantly being judgmental. Many people like to criticize actors and famous people for being materialistic, but Ian proves that there is more in life than expensive things.
His passion for life and nature really shines with his love for birds being at the forefront.
I learned so much about birds and got an amazing perspective from Ian on how he saw them. He noticed everything from their appearance, calling sounds, environment. Ian tied in his knowledge about birds and made them apart of his life. Different birds were part of different memories in his life. It was truly beautiful to hear his stories about his grandparents and their connection to specific birds..
For all you PLL fans, you will not be disappointed. Again, Ian is so open about his relationship with his co-stars and even talks about meeting and auditioning with Lucy Hale. He takes you behind the scenes of his life while working on the show and it's not all glamorous.

He reminds us that beauty is pain lol I really enjoyed his honesty when it came to PLL. He went in depth about his thoughts on being on the show and the show coming to an end. Odd Birds was hard to put down. If anything, this book gives you an appreciation for nature.
I found myself looking for birds when i was outdoors and it wasn't something I normally did. Ian made this book fun and fresh and wrote it in a way that makes you feel all emotions. Feb 07, Kim Marie rated it really liked it. I fell in love with him for the second time when I was 13 years old and the show started airing.
Ian Harding since then has a special place in my heart. When I heard about his book I knew that I'd read it eventually and when I heard that he was coming to New York City the time I was in town, I knew I had to get the book, as well as an autograph and a picture. He was lovely, exactly the way I imagined him to be and exactly how he seems to be in the book. Really down to earth. His way of writing is simple but in the most beautiful way. His sense of humour made me laugh out loud several times and never failed to bring a smile to my face.
The way he is writing about his passion, about the birds, is heartwarming and thoroughly true. I can highly recommend this but not just to fans of the show which makes it even more special, since he is talking about his auditions and time on set, as well as free time spent with his co stars now and then but also to everyone who just wants to read a light book about a down to earth, kind of quirky in the best way and passionate young actor, that will definitely lighten up your mood.
And maybe — just maybe, if you're really lucky — while you're out there flying and flapping for years, you'll see some pretty incredible things. Sep 26, Sara rated it it was amazing. Actor Ian Harding is only 31, so it would be silly for him to write a straight up memoir.

Instead, he tells various stories from his life through the lens of bird watching. That's right, bird watching. Harding is an avid birder and every chapter in this beautifully written book features birds in some capacity. Harding does talk about his childhood, college years, and of course his time on Pretty Little Liars. This book had a lot more to do with birds and Harding's love for them than I expected. There are several chapters that are devoted almost entirely to the story of birding trips he went on with some of his friends. If you want to read this in hopes of getting a behind the scenes look at PLL, you might be disappointed.
While Harding does throw us a bone here and there, this is not a book about PLL. It's a book about a man who loves birds in an extraordinarily nerdy way. I learned more about birds from reading this book than I ever thought I wanted to. Even if you have no idea what PLL is or who Ian Harding is, if you're interested in birds and bird watching, you will enjoy this book. Harding is funny, witty, and a wonderful writer.
I listened to the audio book version, narrated by the author, and I highly recommend it. If you're familiar with him, I think his voice will come through in reading the physical copy, but if you want something a little extra, check out the audio edition. Jun 17, Bethany Clark rated it really liked it. This book was not what I expected in many ways. Contrary to popular opinion I expected even more bird talk, but found myself thoroughly entertained by the way that birds were filtered into the narrative and how they enhanced Harding's stories of his life and trying to cope in LA.
The book is brutally honest in what it's trying to do. When Harding talked of his mother's diagnosis with Lupus you could sense the turmoil this put him through, it was honest and open and something that I think is often This book was not what I expected in many ways. When Harding talked of his mother's diagnosis with Lupus you could sense the turmoil this put him through, it was honest and open and something that I think is often hidden when reading a book like this.
The author is someone who has very much been thrust into the limelight due to his career and success I can't deny that's why I purchased this book and what 'Odd Birds' actually delivers is a heartfelt love story to those closest to him, as well as demonstrating his real love of birding. A hobby that sounds genuinely fascinating to me now, but I confess I lack the patience for. There are moments of the narrative that will stay with me for a long time, which I am hesitant of revealing in this review because people should read it and find their own moments to cherish.
But what I take away from this book is a man with a real love for what he does both personal and in his work and who comes across as a genuine and lovely person. I'm incredibly pleased that I chose to read 'Odd Birds' and it will have a cherished place on myself for many years to come. May 28, Kimberly rated it really liked it Shelves: There are two types of people that will likely enjoy Ian Harding's book, Odd Birds. The first, probably the most obvious, are fans of his show Pretty Little Liars.
The second, which are typically far less marketed to, are birders which if you don't know are people who enjoy finding birds. I'm not a birder by any means, but I enjoy a good nature hike and birds of course, are a big part of that. Odd Birds is, for the most part, a blend of Ian's thoughts and experiences as an actor both before and during his time on PLL and as a birder.
While, as a viewer of PLL, I enjoyed the behind the scenes anecdotes, I found myself enjoying the bird-centric chapters more than expected. Some of the book's most amusing moments happen when the two merge such as his "splore" with co-star Keegan Allen as well as his texting of birds to his other co-star Tyler Blackburn. Harding's overall tone is calm, relaxed, and generally lighthearted. That's not to say it isn't thoughtful though. While Harding's love of birds and nature leaves him with much commentary on life, death, and the meaning of everything in between, it manages never to weigh itself down with existential dread.
Odd Birds is overall, a very enjoyable, relaxing, and amusing read. If you find yourself with a copy of Odd Birds in your hands, I highly recommend finding a nice cozy outdoor spot. Ideally, with a bird or two chirping in the distance. May 17, Morgan rated it really liked it Shelves: As a big PLL fan, but not particularly a fan of Harding's creepy character on the show, I actually wasn't sure how much I'd enjoy this book.
I actually enjoyed it quite a bit! From some interviews I've read, it seemed like Harding has a good sense of humor about himself and his industry, which really comes through in the book. I liked the way he tied together stories of bird watching with stories of Hollywood. It probably helps that I love Pretty Little Liars, so I enjoyed all the low-key behind the scenes stories. I will also probably never stop laughing about the fact that both Ian and Lucy auditioned for 50 Shades of Grey.
We could have had an Ezria 50 Shades of Grey. Just let that sit with you for a minute. I can't decide if I'm happy for their careers that they missed out or sad we as a nation missed that unique experience. I liked that this memoir, such as it was, was more everyday and low-key. It actually made me want to go to the park and look for birds, even though I don't really care that much about birds.
Based on this, I'd love to read another book from Ian Harding. Some of the recreated dialogue in this one was really snappy; I'd definitely read a fiction book if he's ever so inclined to write one. Also, and let's be real, he gained my undying love for referring to Ezra Fitz as a pedo, several times. Jun 05, Sarah rated it it was amazing. But having seen Ian in interviews I was intrigued by how self deprecating and down to earth he seemed and hoped his book would give a better insight into his personality rather than the character he plays.
Ian has a real way with words and the way he ties his anecdotes in to bird watching is equal parts clever, funny and relatable. As a mum of 3 boys I particularly enjoyed reading his stories of his childhood, they were honest and funny and made me feel nostalgic for when my boys were little and tearing about hell for leather.
The chapter that resonated with me the most was his families connection to the Cardinals that visited his garden. I lost my dad 8 years ago and when I did one of my closest friends told me that he'd come to watch over me in the form of a robin, she said they carry the soul's of our loved ones.
Every time I see a robin on our bird feeding station I remember my dad and after losing my friend last year to cancer we now have 2 robins that visit us, she told us to look for her in rainbows, robins and butterflies and we do. I thoroughly enjoyed this book , it was just a joy to read and made a change from a lot of autobiographies which can often be all doom and gloom Sep 12, Alyssa White rated it really liked it.
So, of course, I had to read his memoir. I was a little wary because celebrity memoirs can sometimes come across as a quick cash-grab or can read too simplistically. His impressive vocabulary made it feel like I was reading a fiction novel at times, and his writing was fluid, humorous, and, at times, poignant and nostalgic. I experienced so many emotions while reading Odd Birds, and I adored how into ornithology the study of birds Ian was. I also loved his accounts of working on PLL, and enjoyed reading about his bond with his costars. Feb 01, Maria rated it really liked it.

At least not now. I think the secret to a happy life is to keep moving, to keep trying to do the things you love. His descriptions of theater school totally reminded me of some my friends' experiences and his obsession with bird watching was genuinely fun to read about because he got so excited about it. This is a must-read for PLL fans. There are tons of cameos and mentions of Ian's costars.
