Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. Sasha has marries Daniel Youngtblood from the first novel "Trojan Horse". They are a happily married couple. Sasha and Daniel come home one day and are intercepted by a gunman. Daniel is shot and killed. Sasha uses her CIA kill skills to shoot the gunman.
After an investigation they discover that the gunman is a contract killer sent by none other thanSaif Ibu Mohammed al Aziz al-Mujari Saif. It is also discovered that Saif and Qahtani are now the head men of al-Mujari.
This group intends to take Saudi Arabia over. This erupts into a huge shooting match. This is another good book by David Lender. A reminder that terrorism is really a world wide threat to world stability.
I'd give the Sasha storyline an A for quality of writing and story. I was disappointed in this book. I have come to enjoy Lender stories and am now a fan. Don't have a Kindle? It's just an incredible light sci-fi series that fans of "Dark Matter" would also enjoy.
While the story takes place in Sauda Arabia it cleverly outlines the emotions behind an Arab spring. Through the characters David paints the passion of those in other countries who struggle with their government and human rights tied togather with theb beliefs of islam. He outlines what countries will do to maintain their special interest in maintaining a status controllable rather than a unpredictable sweeping change in government.
This book rates up there with the super WOW! Ok at first I had a problem figuring out where I was time wise. Was it a futuristic book, where in time etc.. That caused me to check the Saudi line of sanquinity and it didn't click time wise either.
BUT as I read more I decided it did not matter one bit. Other than the timing factor I couldn't figure out, the author gave a great representation of Saudi state and the welfare of its people.
The book takes you through the life of Sasha del Mira, detailing her marriage and subsequent heartbreak all leading her back to life as a CIA spook. It is well written, character development awesome. The author leaves you feeling as you have lived an up front and close life as a Saudi, but not the boring history type text book. It was more a feeling of total immersion in the Saudi life style. Further you find you are still pulling for the bad guy in a way that you can feel his pain.
And of course you are cheering the heroine on along with her scruffy American handler. This book should be optioned for a movie post haste. However David Lender should be the ONLY one to write the screenplay, bc without his gentle touch to nuances of Sasha's story it would be just another movie.
You feel her pain and that makes a great read!
We'll circle back in time to learn how Sasha ended up in the prince's bedroom, a lengthy flashback sequence which I initially thought was unwieldy but ended up enjoying very much. Readers will also meet an enigmatic and murderously efficient mercenary, a character given just enough detail to make me want to see him again, hopefully in the next Sasha story, Arab Summer, which is also on my To Read List. I'm looking forward to revisiting Sasha in that next book because I enjoyed Trojan Horse, but I did have some small issues with it.
The romance between Daniel and his mystery photographer, and more pointedly their dialogue when together, worked for the plot but not as much for me. Also, the back half of the book dealing with the actual terrorist threat moved very quickly to the conclusion -- perhaps a bit too quickly as it had a rushed feel. On a personal note, I found it a bit difficult to begin liking Daniel the banker, even as he mourned his wife.
Daniel's casual mention of earning multi-million dollar fees and bonuses reminded me there is a huge divide between the haves and have-nots in life, and I know which side I'm on: Extravagance and riches are on display throughout, with the Saudi royals living a lifestyle the rest of us can only imagine hint: Maybe that's why I liked the grubby mercenary so much, especially when he shows up on Wall Street in what's described as "a K-Mart" suit.
Slight quibbles aside, I enjoyed this story and want to find out what happens in the next book. To learn more about Mr. Lender and his books, check out his website: I really enjoyed the mixture of romance, action, and Middle East intrigue the author brought to this book.
In particular, I found Sasha's back story quite fascinating. I've only heard of the Saudi princes' lavish lifestyles, but the author did a great job of bringing that hidden world to life.
These royals live in an alternate universe from most people and pretty much a different plane of existence from their countrymen. I think the author could have and maybe should have written a whole book devoted to just Sasha and her life as a Saudi concubine.
I'd give the Sasha storyline an A for quality of writing and story. To me, the terrorist plot seemed kind of shoehorned in around Sasha's past and didn't seem as original. Still enjoyable, just not as absorbing. Was wondering how the author was going to wrap up the terrorist plot in such a short time. He did it, but again appeared like it was almost a super sub-plot.
And like others, I found the romance and the accompanying dialog between the protagonists a little unbelievable. Nevertheless, for a dollar, I can't complain at all. The writing was good with interesting plot and characters so definitely recommended for a read by the beach. The International Thriller is a new genre to me. The story tells of a scarily real threat in today's world of oil dependence and Muslim fundamentalism.
While writing an action-packed thriller, the author managed, through the backstory, to keep my interest in the exotic Sasha, as her story and complex character unfolds and she unexpectedly finds love in the midst of all the intrigue. Lender's writing style is dense and admittedly you need to pay attention until you learn the main characters and get into the rhythm of the alternating time settings.
I did not find it as confusing as some Amazon reviews led me to believe. The pace of the novel was just right for me, slower when developing characters and relationships and faster in the action scenes. Get to Know Us.
